  • A retired manufacturing executive and his wife take a celebratory European vacation only to find that they want very different things from life in Samuel Goldwyn’s production of Sinclair Lewis’ DODSWORTH (1936). Based on the long running Broadway hit , it starred Oscar Nominated Walter Huston and was directed by William Wyler. Huston, is joined by Ruth Chatterton, Mary Astor, Paul Lukas and David Niven. Rounding out the cast are newcomer and Broadway veteran, Maria Ouspenskaya of the Moscow Art Theatre ( Oscar Nominee), Spring Byington and John Payne. It’s unforgettable and as relevant today as the day it was released.

I saw this on TCM a couple of years ago. I thought that Mary Astor had never looked more lovely. There was a quiet dignity with a bit of sadness that she portrayed in her character. Now, knowing she was going through personally, it probably wasn't hard for her to do. Loved Walter Huston in this and Ruth Chatterton's character was absolutely maddening. The ending was incredibly satisfying.

A favorite of mine, so glad you feature it. I KNEW you could not do this without unloading your Maria Ouspenskaya impression. Mary Astor was so modern, so cool, so lovely. When she says that one word 'don't' to Ruth Chatterton, I can't remember another single word in any movie reverberating and saying so much.

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ

Such a subtle, natural actress. Astor always made it look so easy. As for Maria, I have a sneaking suspicion that she and Bette Davis will both be waiting with ax in hand when I reach the "Pearlie Gates". YIKES!! Happy New Year and thanks for watching! Steve

This is one of my favorites! I saw it the first time years ago on the late late show, back when stations signed off after the movie. What struck me was how natural Walter Huston was and how modern the movie felt. Glad to hear Mary told those men off!!!

The ending - I just want to cry in those last few frames… Astor!
There’s a scene in the book…not in the movie. Later in life Sam and Mary are sitting quietly and he has this look on his face, he loves Mary, but Fran was still under his skin… and she sees this look on his face and she says something along the lines of, “you know, I still miss my first husband (who had died). He was a wonderful man, intelligent and learned… he could speak three languages! We were very happy. If he hadn’t died, we’d still be happy”
And that made Sam forget about Fran… for the rest of the afternoon…
Not every relationship dies out completely. We’re not told that as children. It’s confusing when we realize it as adults.

Another great review. Astor is sublime, but for me, Chatterton gives one of the great film performances. Interesting that she wanted to make the character kinder. It was the fact that she was so repellent that makes the role so powerful. The last scream, "He's leaving the ship!" is a gut punch.

Thanks for giving this film fresh-air for others to see and enjoy. There are tidbits in the film that have some choice cuts: when Niven undercuts Chatterton the last night on the ship exposing her less than sophisticated facade, and when in Paris, Huston calls the parasite woman-faux-friend "the madame", as she does procure the next affair, he does not know, or when an ex-pat woman on the hunt at a Paris cafe gives Huston the eye, even when he wants to be a generous father with his daughter that is a touching moment -- all precious sequences that add to this: all you can eat grazing buffet. What I enjoyed is that Astor and Chatterton are never presented as rivals, just two different women who cross paths over Huston.

Walter Huston singing "September Song" was a revelation. It's not that he has range, but he uses his voice to show so much nuance. "Dodsworth" was excellent; Mary Astor glows when she's looking at Sam and saying she'd love to travel the world in his version of an automobile "caravan" or small mobile home. The great part of the movie was seeing the couple all dressed in evening wear on the first night of the ocean voyage and they realize they've gotten it all wrong, in her desire to act as if they are sophisticated travelers.
This was such a great review from you. Your appreciation is contagious! The background you provide about Mary Astor's custody trial and Ruth Chatterton's act of friendship, really flesh out how great these actors were at their job, but also as people.

Great review, thank you. Ruth Chatterton made this movie, she was perfectly cast. She should have won an academy award for playing this awful role. Very hard to display the subtle emotions of the part, much more difficult than it seems. Walter Huston was great too, he could play a bum or an industrialist, equally well. Love Mary Astor. And love you, Steve.

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ

Thanks so much! I think that possibly her fights with Wyler and the word around town that she was being "difficult", might have lessoned her chances to be nominated. Her's the the more difficult and histrionc character, which , as written, she plays perfectly. Something you might find interesting, she did a live TV version of "Dodsworth" in the early '50's, repeating her role with Walter Abel as Sam. You can watching it on CZcams and she's still gteat. Thanks for watching and Best Wishes; Steve

A favorite movie. I read the novel and was glad to learn more about Dodsworth. Sinclair Lewis had previously written Babbitt, about a pompous, utterly conventional businessman from the same fictional Midwestern city of Zenith. Dodswirth, a thoroughly decent fellow capable of independent thinking, was no Babbitt.
I like to imagine Mrs Dodswirth returning to Zenith. As the victim of a straying husband; I am sure he would be a gentleman about the divorce, not dumping her as an adulteress. With a generous settlement, her own money and the big house, she would settle back into the life of iadies' clubs she had fled. With more grandchildren on the way....
Dodsworth and his new lady would travel the World. Then he would use his talents to set up production of equipment to defeat Fascism
Yes, these characters seem that real to me

I like your predictions, however, I feel that Fran will be more and more resentful with age, becoming a grandmother many times over and being stuck in a town she loathes. She'll be so jealous of Sam's happiness, she'll make his life as miserable as she can and bleed mony out of him at every opportunity. However, Edith will be standing by his side supporting him in all his dreams and endeavors. Yes, they are such real people. Thanks for watching and Happy New Year! Best Wishes; Steve

Where did you get the SCANDAL DVD? I would love to see the documentary but can't find it anywhere, to stream or purchase. As for the movie - one of my favorites, filled with wonderful scenes for all the actors. Thrilling to see Mary Astor in all her youth and beauty playing a role worth her talent. Chatterton and Huston - wonderful! Ouspenskaya - ditto (how's that for a rousing tribute? But, really!). Every role performed perfectly, a literate script, wonderful backstory (Astor's custody suit) and the film is perfectly put together. Now tell me where you got that DVD!

Loved your aside about Gale Sondergaard/Anthony Adverse. Just one look at her looking as she looks and my heart grows tipsy in me. Love the moment when Huston is on the boat coming back to Astor and her sighting him and their waving to one another and there goes my heart again. Lovely film. The book must be read now.

Steve. What a great choice. I love this. When I was late teens I saw Mary Astor in Return to Peyton Place and Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte and had never seen her as a young actress. Seeing her films from the 30s and 40s when I was a little older was a revelation. I knew Huston from Treasure....so thought of him as a grizzled old man. I'd never heard of Chatterton so when I saw this film it was like making a big discovery with all the leads and it is wonderful. Thanks for reminding us of a great film. Steve, you're right about this film being relevant to this day. The dialogue is so modern the same 1936 script could be used in a remake without changing a word. Of course it'd be foolish to try and remake this movie. The original is perfect and there aren't any stars today who carry it off in my opinion. So many well done scenes, but one of my favorites is toward the end when Walter Huston leaves Ruth Chatterton on the boat and she shouts in anguish "He's going ashore! He's going ashore!" against the blare of the ships horn. Cinematically I guess that was her being erased from his life. So many rich layers.

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ
      @STEVEHAYESTOQ  Před 2 lety

You know, John, if I were to remake it, in an ideal world, I would have kept it period, shot it back in the 1990's and cast it with Gene Hackman as Sam, Glenn Close as the wife and either Susan Sarandon or Jessica Lange as Edith. It still is so relevent and has so much to say about people, the fear of aging and the lack of communication in relationships. "Timely" is the word that always comes to mind when I think of "Dodsworth" . Happy Summer! Steve

There is a very good book about the Astor Diary scandal. She is superb in this film as is everyone else plus my favorite director Wyler. Ouspenskaya is absolutely brilliant as Charles Boyers aunt in Love Affair ( remade as Affair to Remember). She is so warm and wonderful there

I haven't seen this in years but you've got me wanting to see it again. It's a good way for a lot of people to see Ruth Chatterton, whose film career was near its end, though the character is just so awful. You do a great Maria Ouspenskaya., good enough to appear in a Wolf Man movie.

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ

Chatterton was an incredible actress and later a successful novelist as well. I recently saw a TV version of "Dodsworth" on YouTUbe that she did with Walter Abel as Sam in 1951. She was still terrific! Best Wishes; Steve

Suggestion for a review; "Arise My Love." Starring Claudette Colbert and Ray Milland. As two characters who really want to be in a screwball comefy romance. But the world is going crazy.
In the beginning, he is a pilot who had flown for the Spanish Loyalusts, awaiting execution by the Fascists. She reports on Ladies Stories in Paris but wants to be a Serious Journalist. So she breaks him out of jail...
The film shows on TCM occasionally, streams nowhere and has been unobtainable for years. Now available on DVD and BluRay

Mary Astor and Walter Huston were both in The Maltese Falcon directed by his son John, Walter plays Captain Jacoby who stumbles into Sam Spade's office. John made his father fall over and over again, take after take, just for the hell of it.

Everyone is so overtaken with Astor's beauty and expressions you forget to watch her movement. She is so graceful.
Times have changed because it makes me feel slutty that I feel for Chatterton's character, too. Women, even from wealth, were terribly repressed in those days and I can feel her need to sow those oats.. (and gourds, and a few rows of something nutty just to bring it home.)
I didn't discover this till way late in my life (THANKS TCM) and found it an engrossing drama. I am amazed at how many of my macho bros/frnds like this. Makes me wonder if they come to the conclusion with a different satisfaction than women do.

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ
      @STEVEHAYESTOQ  Před 2 lety

I feel for Chatterton too, however, as written the character is so silly and self-absorbed that it's a difficult ride. Of course, it's also the old double standard at work here. It's alright for a man to have younger lovers , but a woman is made to feel old and degenerate. I love the naturalness of the dialofue and the acting, especially of Huston, Astor and adorable/wise Spring Byington that ground it for me. Thanks for watching, writing and Happy New Year! best Wishes; Steve
