I still use my 40D and love it. Tried "upgrading" to newer tech, but after comparing results, sent the new one back and spent the money on a professional servicing and lenses. It's only 10mp, but they're big and capture lots of detail along with that beautiful canon color!

Agreed! I've had my 40D since 2007 and tried "upgrading" to Fujifilm X-T3. It's different. Too many dials and buttons compare to simple and old canon 40D. I kept it, so I carry two cameras :)))) Sometimes focus isn't great (low light) on Canon, but I like how "dreamy" (vs sharp modern prof cameras image quality) my pics look )))))

A seller "threw in" a inoperative 40D, with the purchase of an old Yashica 35 electro I bought as a project. Turned out the 40D just needed a battery charge and CF card. Works great. The old Yashica just needed a battery compartment and cover cleaning with some foil to help restore current and it works great as well. 2 nice cameras for 26 dollars. I'm quite impressed with the AF on old Canons considering their limited number of focus points, and the image quality is great. I will probably give the cameras to someone who needs them as I already have too many. I just enjoy getting them running again.

I love the XXD series of cameras! Fun fact: This summer, I was invited to the Wedding of my best friend from school. They had a team of two photographers (Sony A7 IIIs) and one lady videographer (R6).
I was a guest but couldn't resist taking my 50D + 24-70 2.8II, Speedlite, and 2 radio triggers with me.
Long story short, the bride loved my photos way more than the ones from the paid photographers. (Im a portrait photographer with 15 years of experience)
The newest gear is good, but oldish cameras, like in the video or those 30D and 50D, still make a fantastic photo tool. It's the limitations of your gear that help your creativity to shine! We just need to have hands that grow from shoulders, not hips.

My two Canon bodies are a 5D Mk1 and a 40D. While I love the depth I get from the 5D's full frame sensor, I vastly prefer actually using the 40D. It's the best feeling camera I've veer owned, is a great balance of feeling pro and solid while also being somewhat light. The fact I bought it with 2000 shutter count for $90 is just the icing on the cake.

As a former user of the 40D, I loved it until I came to realize that there were better options. It suddenly stopped working and my mom offered to buy a new 60D. We got the 40D to work again but as I figured out that the 60D was just the better option for me as it seemed like an updated and better 40D. Still have both to this day and I use the 60D frequently and the 40D just stays on display to ensure it doesn't break again. I got the 40D around a few months after release and got the 60D a few weeks after it started being sold. Loved both of them and I take good care of them so that they last long.

I shoot an "old " DSLR, the Canon 6D. Without any doubt in my mind I can say it's the best value on the used market in 2023.
Image quality really hasn't moved on that much since it was launched in 2012 (11 years!!!!!). Yes, cameras have more megapixels but 20Mp is a bit of a sweet-spot when it comes to file size vs detail. Yes, focussing has moved on (no eye-detect, no face-detect) but 99.9% of the best images in history were taken on cameras without face-detect.
I just picked up a used one, with only 2,000 shots, in "Like New" condition, with a 6 month warranty for ......... $400 (Four hundred dollars!!!!).
Older Canons produce beautiful colours straight from camera, something that seems to have got lost as megapixels increased. When you put some nice glass on the 6D, like the Canon 85mm f/1.8, you get the most exquisite portraits, somehow incredibly sharp but with a "buttery smooth" quality. I can't describe it but it looks like the opposite of ultra sharp, obviously digital, output.
Basically magic happens. I'd love to try it with the 135 f/2 L, that would truly be magical.
Grab yourself a used bargain and don't go chasing meaningless tech-specs, go for image quality every time. 400 dollars ffs !!!!!!

Just purchased and “like new” one from eBay with only 2k shutter count and it’s absolutely mint with absolutely no signs of wear etc. the colours and tonality are beautiful right out of camera.
I have newer tech like Nikons D610, D7200 and D7500 , but they all produce a more modern digital look , where my 40D resembles that film look .
I love the build and usability of the 40D and it’s great it has a separate clock battery to.
I am so happy with it , I went and purchased another canon camera from MPB , this time a 7D MrkII with only 1.2k and again like new.
Love both of these older canons very much and the images that come out with no editing look superb, Color’s and punchy with the added film type look (40D even more so ) 👌

First, the Snappiness forum is awesome, highly recommended, many thoughtful and kind folks there.
Second, yep I’m shooting on an original Canon 5D that I picked up with lens and memory card for $300. It has minimal features, but I think that’s part of what makes it a joy to use. It just works right and I really love the handling.
Third, your assessment of the lens situation is spot on. For the cost of a current entry level APSC kit, I have a rugged full frame camera with three great lenses.

I would like to add my two cents
I was using a Fujifilm XA2 as my daily. I got curious about DSLRS' did some research and went ahead and purchased the Canon EOS 50D, it has been about a year now. The battery that came with the unit was faulty, so the camera shop knocked off an additional percentage. Very kind of them.
This is a very nice camera, it feels, looks and sounds like a camera (does this make sense?). I have used it during heavy snow and light rain, was using the 18-to 55 lens, then purchased the nifty fifty.
Colors are very smooth and buttery, not perfect but pleasing. Watch your ISO. I am looking forward to using this little Hulk more often and would recommend anyone who would like to give photography a try. Remember it's not the camera but the person behind the camera that make great images.
    Pleasant Day All

Had my 40D for a few months now. Absolutely love it. I also picked up a used 6D also. If anything, whilst the images, dynamic range etc are all superior on the 6D, the 40D felt a little bit more responsive? May just be me and/or the ef-s24mm lens combo but either way, it’s still a viable tool in today’s market of ultra fast and high tech, modern mirrorless bodies.

I've been enjoying your low-key, non-hype, but highly insightful review of the 40D - my second viewing, in fact.
I bought my 40D new in early 2008 and, even though I've added a 5D4 and a 6D in past few years, the 40D continues to please, for many of the reasons you set forth. I've also found continued delight from it in using some favorite manual focus M42 lenses via adapters, lately the focus-confirmation types that give some added assurance in tricky focus situations. The camera, as you state, produces lovely colors, certainly rivaling those of my full-frame Canons. As long as one respects its limitations in terms of high ISO shooting and other generation-related factors, the 40D continually pleases. I love the build quality and shooting feel and the camera was obviously built for the long haul. It's never required any work beyond a sensor cleaning and there is genuine comfort in knowing, should mine finally take its last shot, this fantastic "old" gal (especially in terms of digital's never-ending parade of new models) can be replaced at such a remarkably low price. Thanks for that reminder ;-)

I still use my old 30D, it is more difficult to use as compared to modern mirrorless cameras nowadays, but the feel of using is in my opinion is far superior than that of the modern mirrorless. From the grip, optical viewfinder, the ability to compose without turning on the cameras display or evf, therefore, the battery consumption is very efficient. I can keep my camera turned on for fast capturing.
The age starts to kick in when shooting under low light conditions. The iso can go up to 3200 only, and that is extended already. And the performance of the autofocus is rather terrible in difficult situations usch as low light, or backlit scenes.
But, still, the user experience of using an old dslr is really nice. Also, I like the colours coming out from the camera, despite the mediocre dynamic range.

40D sure is an amazing camera and better than most budget DSLR's of today. But I use an even older Canon 10D to this day and honestly speaking I'm extremely satisfied with it, yeah I know it's a camera released back in 2003 and only has just 6.3MP sensor but who cares, because I mostly shoot during the daytime, and when I compare the pictures of this camera to my brother's 5D Mark 4's pictures I don't see much of a difference and yes I'm not bluffing. Yeah if you pixel peep you may see some differences, but generally speaking I can't find much of a difference in the photos. The differences could only be seen if you're shooting in low-light but that's the time I strictly avoid and I'm sure most photographers like me does the same. So to conclude, 40D is still an amazing camera to buy one even now in 2022.

I will say, I do shoot a lot of seascapes at sunset and I tried that with the 40D and struggled quite a bit more as the dynamic range isn’t quite as forgiving as my Mark IV. 😆 I still got an ok image, but it was tricky.

The 5d's image look is quite outstanding, but what the 30d gives me is even as reliable. And the AF is so much better than on the pro. I slapped a 64GB CFCard in it, and while the counter is unable to show more than 9,999 images, it still works great and now I will never run out of space. While it would be nice to have the latest, not sure I take enough pictures to justify it.

That's always my favorite when someone tells me, "great picture! What camera did you use?" And I tell them and they say "oh you should buy X camera, it's way better". Okay, so did you think my picture was great or not? xD

Though I have newer cameras (my 60D and 6D2), I always come back to my XSI (my first). The controls feels so simple because the menus are so much smaller. Now newer menu systems have so much that you can get lost. Also it is small and great to throw a prime lens on and do some street photography. And the images have always been amazing. 800 ISO is clean to me and 1600 is a push but has a pleasing grain look and not a nasty noise look.

On your next DSLR cheap purchase, I would suggest getting the Nikon D300/D300s. This camera can be had from $125 to $200 depending on your luck. Obviously the cheaper you get it the better value you get for your money, but what is special about this camera, it is basically bringing you into the 21st century. The 12mp dx sensor in this model delivers great and more than better, but great image quality with is color depth and dynamic range. It is a pro body, with a pro autofocus system and subject/3d tracking capability, and high fps when coupled with a battery grip. Great for bird shooting. This is truly a legendary and venerable body not just of its time, but also today.

I have a Canon 30d which I love and I recently bought a 40d for £50 with a slipping front dial. Easily fixed using meths and a cotton bud. I love the automatic sensor cleaning function of the 40d, it really reduced the amount of dust compared to the 30d where I was always blowing it out or cleaning with sensor pad. it's also got a much better screen.
My next dilemma is do I but a 5d classic or 5d mark ii?
The classic is basically a full frame version of the 30d. I see how popular the classic is becoming due to the lovely images produced. However it has a few issues especially mirror falling out and no way to find shutter count. The 5d mark ii is much more like the 40d and I feel id prefer some of the features with the bonus of more megapixels for the times I want to crop.

While I have more modern bodies which do perform MUCH better in low light (both ISO and autofocus), I have and regularly use a 5D classic and a 40D. They were practically free and when paired with a library of good lenses turn out excellent results. You just have to treat them like a film camera which is what I grew up shooting so no problem. I often prefer being limited in such ways and I often find it results in better or more creative images than if I just whipped off a pic with a camera that can see in the dark. However, the 40D has a flaw with its shutter design and my unit had a sticky shutter when I got it. I was able to resolve it with some 99% alcohol but that design flaw is a bummer.

But you can get it for like 40 or 50$ used. And the Nikon F lenses are everywhere, from all eras of photography (pretty much).

No wheel for the shutter speed in a prosumer camera? Great camera but Canon should have spent the extra few dollars like everyone else. My Canon has the same cost saving feature where the wheel does double duty when you turn it while holding down the button at the same time. That is an entry level model from 2005 though so I can understand that. Not having that in a prosumer body is just wrong.

I know that on paper the 40D is the better camera but I'd love to know what you would go for in this situation, given that the 400D is smaller and lighter and also in much better nick.
