Nigel Hawthorne is still unsurpassed in his portrayal of Sir Humphrey. Truly one of the greatest characters ever portrayed in television
😢😢🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😢😢
INDEED.
I totally agree. He mastered the art of smooth delivery with the sly view of do what I want and not yours. Loved it.
The goofiness and idealism of Hacker really sold it too.
Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister is as relevant today as it was forty years ago. A comedy written for an intelligent, well-informed public.
Which is uncanny, since the politicians of today still do not have a clue.
"Not Imperial Egg on his face but Scotch Egg"...hahaha
@@darrenmurray861 they should be made to watch every episode at least three times before being sworn in ...
It certainly helped us become informed about how things really work.
@@lilymarinovic1644 what are you saying, Boris Johnson literally used the same argument Hacker used for Brexit, their idea of internal inquiry is also a derivative, if they copy any more the public will be made complete fools.
This series was and will remain unsurpassed.
"Back in the good ol days we'd just send a gun boat."
"Are you absolutely sure that isn't an option?"
I do miss those times!!!
Its ALWAYS an option...
Apparently in 2024 it is still an option
@Rroff2 it's an aircraft carrier these days
The BBC got it right with this series. Excellent comedy, excellent actors.
An absolute gem of a show with shining performances from all the cast - main and supporting characters - writing - just as relevant 40-45 years later.
See the discussion about tobacco for a true example of cynicism in politics.
I could see Hacker and Humphrey having an argument about a proposal to 'level-up' the country 😉
I watched this series first time in about 2021, and it was to my amazement to find that it was made many tens of years ago. Yet it seemed as relevant as ever.
Fantastic gem of a show.
Yes, the pilot episode was actually recorded in 1979 just before the UK general election. The election sadly made the pilot episode not being aired, and instead the BBC gave permission to record six further episodes to provide a full series. That was filmed in the autumn of 1979, and the first series aired in Jan 1980.
Sir Humphrey, at his finest!!! 🤣🤣🤣
I never realized that this program was a training video for all future English governments.
Not just English government, but the worldwide also.
To all government😂
actually it was a documentary about governments post 1945
Basically for all western democracy
The Black Hole of Calcutta scene is my favourite 😂
Room for a small one?
@@petermorris9818welcome to the standing committee
"Well we're all agreed than that the Mountain shall go to Mohammad"
"Oh no no. Jim's going"
"That's what I meant"
I haven't seen a mountain yet. I shall let you decide what my name is
Nigel Hawthorne as archdeacon Grantley in the Barchester Chronicles is amazing too.
A piece of political fiction actually more coherently making sense than actual current politics. Says a lot. Great piece of television history...the series.
The civil service nowadays is so underpaid and understaffed they outsource most of the proposal draftings to the private consultants, at an eyewatering cost.
A lot of these ideas for the episodes came from actual situations that occurred in government. The writers had 2 informants from within Whitehall who provided real situations. This is how the writers achieved the accurate language and portrayal of the Civil Service at the time. It hasn't changed much either.
This could be today, timeless humour, well written, performed and produced, never bettered, or even likely to be.
It began as a comedy and ended up a documentary.
“Not egg, minister, just imperialist yoke” 😂 So simultaneously brilliant and stupid
“Welcome to the standing committee lol
Great show, I watched it millions times and still do from time to time, every time I watch it I learn something new. The only negative thing I can say, is that is was only 5 seasons only (YM & YPM)!!!!
Fowlds’ delivery is sublime.
Reminds me of the Marx Bros crowded cabin scene from 'A Night at the Opera' 😁
Between Yes Minister/ Yes Prime Minister, and The Original What's My Line. With These four people, and John Charles Daily and the panel they are the most intelligent shows in the history of television.
I loved the little "what? - what?" moments 25:37 in the first series
I believe that Diana Huddenott is the only regular actor still alive, John Nettleton, (Humphreys boss) died earier this year.
Most of the political maneuvering is applicable to US politics. I have personally use some of these techniques to great success. The writing is superb. Thank you
We're all very proud of you
Timeless classic!
I really need to pick this series up, it's worth owning a hard copy of, and I didn't know til now they had their own version of the Marx Bros immortal Stateroom Scene
Simply wonderful 😊nothing changes does it ? 😂😂
I work in government and this is so accurate lmao
Rory Stewart just confirms he had a Hacker-Humphrey like feud w/the civil servants he worked with in his new memoir "Politics On the Edge"
Yes, minister and Yes, Prime minister were run on JRT - Yugoslav Radio and Tele. network, in the Years of BBC production. The same goes for Only fools and horses and Blackadder and many other British Series. The beggining was in early 70s with comedy In the Bus. Some 15 Years ago Serbian version o Blackadder was made in 2 Series.
One might call this a documentary. However, the situation in the Civil Service nowadays is far, far worse than this.
Well, one must tread with great caution when it comes to the concept of open government, dear viewers. While transparency and accountability are certainly important virtues, we must not forget that there are certain matters that are best left undisclosed for the greater good of the state. The dangers of divulging sensitive information cannot be understated, as it can lead to disastrous consequences for national security and public interest. Moreover, the public's demand for transparency can often be misguided, as they may not have the necessary expertise or understanding to fully comprehend the complexities of government decision-making. So, while open government may seem like a noble goal, we must be wary of the potential pitfalls that come with it.
"No, you carry more weight" 😉
We could sing Abide with me
0:50 Hacker is hazed Oxford style.
O my god........😂😂😂😂😂😂
“The People have the right to be ignorant”
💕
god like
I wonder what Sir Humphrey would think about this government.
He would sigh and tell Malcolm Tucker to deal with them.
😆😆
😆😆
😆😆
Probably laughing when he saw Liz Truss bypassing the civil servants and sent herself to the tombstone
Well that explains why the ultra secretive Australian Department of Defence lost all of its Tea Ladies.
I thought Humphrey's name was Humpty for the longest time. I'm not a native english speaker so I always thought the british accents pronounced Humpty as "Hamfrie" and it is not until later while seeing his name written down when I finally understood that he had a more respectable name.
Only Sir Humphrey has the ability to steer UK out of the mess it finds itself in presently
Bernard after 4:40.
CAST OUT THE IMPERIALIST YOLK!
How much better Yes Minister/Prime Minister was compared to the brutal The Thick Of It.
That was very good also no?
That was good in a different way 😁
I really like them both but Yes Minister/Prime Minister just shades it
4:45 real classism going on there, just step over your underlings
Stop laughing, this is how these thieves work!
Got spare parts?
imperalistic yolk
If one doesn't deal with imperialist yolk it could cause cholesterol damage.
Yoke, surely? 😹
"Yes Minister" has been rebranded as far right
It is very right, as in, correct
@@muffinman4544 all jobs for the boys; maybe if you watch it too much you might catch on yo their bullshit
No it hasn't.
@ijw nah some gimp at some government agency made a list "fans of these shows may demonstrate far right leanings" and its just a list of good shows.
If anything the entire list is full of quality recommendations
@@muffinman4544 exactly
Why most comment on this viedo sound not shanny or funny all are methodolgical while their is a lot ...
Watching the series In the thick makes you feel dirty.
Nope, writing too good, leaving to fins full episodes
