Poletna noč bila je najin dom,
(A Summer night, it was our home,)
vse stene iz dreves; za strop nebo,
(All the walls from trees; the ceiling, the sky;)
preproga travnih bilk, zvezd nebroj za luč,
(The carpet, a lawn of grass; Countless stars for light,)
    brez strehe, brez zidov,
    (Without a roof, without walls,)
    mladim je toplo.
(For the young, it is warm enough.)
    ************************************
    Poletna noč, ljubezni spev, šepet,
(A Summer night, love singing, whispering,)
    sij čustev, žar strasti,
(A flutter of emotion, the glow of affection...)
    vse mine, vse,
    (all mine, All...)
ostane pest spoznanj in prgišče sanj,
(A clutch of reminiscences, a handful of dreams remain,)
    spominov sto za stare dni.
(A hundred memories... of the old days.)
    *****************************************
Pridi kdaj pome, z ognjem v očeh,
(Come for me, with fire in your eyes!)
    bova ljubila se vso noč,
(With each other, we will make love all night.)
pridi kdaj po nasmeh in poljub.
(Come those times!... after a smile!... after a kiss!)
    ***************************************************
Vsak zase zdaj živiva, srečna sva,
(We each live for ourselves now, content we are,)
samo na videz kdaj kot vsi ljudje.
(On the surface, we are just like other folk.)
Mlada kot prej ne bova več.
(Neither of us will be young again, but...)
    Vse dam, vse dam...
(Anything, I'd give!... Anything, I'd give!...)
    za eno noč.
    (For one night!)
    ******************************************

(For One Night!... a Summer... Night!) 💔💕

Dear Primož... I first heard this lovely song back in the mid-1960s as a high school boy, as sung back then by Marjana, of course. And I fell in love with it, long before I understood the Slovene verses or was old enough to understand the true meaning and emotion of the song, which only comes with living a few decades and falling in love, and losing a love. Rediscovering this song, as sung by your chorus and your former students, several of whom, thankfully, are now with the superb "Carmen manet", has been pure joy. And this is absolutely The most beautiful performance of "Poletna noč" that I have ever heard or viewed. You and Primož K. and All of the ladies should be Very proud of this performance of a lifetime. 💖
I made a decision, many weeks ago, to attempt to do a really good English translation of the verses for this video, understanding fully the pitfalls of attempting to translate literally from Slovenian into English, let alone to attempt to guess exactly what the composer was thinking, feeling, or remembering as he or she wrote the lyrics. So I began by running the verses, one-by-one, through my online translator, then giving those a Lot of "think time", and then reading every online translation that I could find (all of which had slightly different interpretations of the verses). I was not satisfied with any of them, because it was obvious to me that, based on my own memories of summer nights and romance of my youth, something of the true meaning and emotion of the verses was missing. To quote an American expression, they just did not "pass the smell test" with me, on an emotional level.
I had, from the beginning, "drafted" Tog into helping me with all of this and, since early last week, I have been sending him draft-after-revised draft of my interpretations of the lyrics, and he would mail back gentle suggestions, corrections, alternate translations for certain Slovenian phrases, and grammatical suggestions for our English version. This finished translation of the verses would not have been as beautiful, emotional, or meaningful without his dedicated help and patience, and this work is every bit as much a result of his work as mine. I owe him a shipload of thanks... or at least a bottle or two of Really good red wine, a decent Bordeaux, perhaps, if I can ever manage the trip over to England to visit him.
Tog and I have spent many, many hours working on this during the past seven days, and it has been a complete labor of love with both of us. We would not take back a minute spent doing it, and it really has been fun!... and personally rewarding. And we have done this not only for ourselves, but also for you, for Primoz K., and for All of the girls and young ladies, now all grown women, in your Gimnazija Kranj Girls' Chorus and in his "Carmen manet". And I hope that Primož K. will share it with the members of his choir who performed that night in 2012, many of whom, such as Eva, I realize, speak excellent English.
If I have any regrets, it is that I did not discover this beautiful video from the 2012 concert years earlier, and attempt the translation back then. But then, I might not yet have met Tog, and this translation would not be close to how it has turned out with his help and expertise. So, really... no regrets.
And now I will take it to the next step... forwarding your video to everyone in my circle of friends who I know love beautiful music, and introduce them to one of the most beautiful songs of my lifetime.
We hope that you are doing well with the new "project", knowing the additional challenges you have now with this "problem" going on around the planet. I will write more to you in an email this week.
Nā kāleka aloha mai Hawai'i, my Good Friend... Conrad 🌴🌴💖
