Tim Minchin - Prejudice REACTION
Thank you again for the suggestions and comments. I really enjoyed this one. Very funny and again great work from Tim. Keep recommending other performances from Tim or any other videos you would like me to react to and I will try to check them out soon. Cheers!
For his wordplay you need to check out his nine minute beat poem Storm
Tim is a west Australian and a ginger. Lol gingers are picked on more here than the UK because they can't spend too long in the sun which in Australia is social suicide
CHEESE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😁😁😂😂❤❤ czcams.com/video/bVKCHZqax84/video.html
Dark side the awesome version.
Trust me you will love it!!
Ffsu did so much talking in this video i skipped almost all of it... THATS HOW MUCH TALKING U DID 🤦🏻♀️ most of the video is you talking 😡
For the last few years I have been regularly checking for new reactions to Tim. And yours is one of the best. Pauses to actually explain your thoughts (as opposed to just laughing at the screen) and not too lengthy pauses with entire life stories.
Also, you seem to 'get it'. All the dimensions in his art deserve appreciation.
This! So many people don't even react to the mumbled "language of prejudice" in the beginning and that's one of the bits that always gets me.
Its easy to see Tim has a new fan. Because you appreciate humour - If i Didnt Have You,. Because you appreciate the music - Darkside - (awesome version) and because you have mentioned the Elton John word - Mitsubishi Colt.
Ok thanks mate, will check these out soon.
@@MertAus Tim's latest music is a bit more serious. Check out Absence of you
Definitely agree on mitsubishi colt with the EJ references 😂
In Australia, we have Ginger nut biscuits, and they often dunked in tea to soften them up because they are pretty hard dry.
I found it so amazing that despite of the title almost everybody immediately thinks of that other word. He let's us simmer a while in our prideful ignorance of thinking we have solved the "mystery". Only to come back and almost instantly punish us for our... prejudice. And then he goes on to educate us (in between the jokes). And still he throws in a couple of "the other word" jokes ("once you ginge you never go back", "play you funky", a.o.). Brilliant writing, piano blows your mind.
For a lot of people it unfortunately goes straight over their head and watching it the second time loses some of that original self awareness value of being confronted with your own prejudice.
I've seen quite a few reactors that did not pick it up at all and had to be "enlightined" :) through the comments. Great reaction, thank you!
The subtitles are cracking me up.
Yeah I think I am going to turn them of on future videos. CZcamss auto translate option is sometimes just not good at all (especially for me as a Scottish person haha)
Unreal, but Tim is a self taught pianist. He has been awarded an honorary Doctorate by the University of WA for his contribution to world arts. His acceptance speech is outstanding. Please do a review.
"The Good Book", "Lullaby", "If I Didn't Have You" and "Cont" are all very different Tim creations, and all brilliant! Can't wait to see you enjoy them!
Thank you for your suggestions Fiona. I will be posting a reaction to Lullaby on Wednesday this week.
So loving your reactions to Tim, can't wait to see more reactions. Darkside (awesome version) for amazing piano and Storm for cleverness, witt and sarcastic wordplay.
Thanks mate. My reaction to Storm will be uploaded on Friday. More people have suggested Darkside I will make sure to get on that soon.
Darkside is piano genius
Great reaction mate. Love watching people reacting to this. A lot of US reactors have given up before the word play becomes obvious which is a pity because he might be talking about gingers but it all relevant to that other word. Gingernuts are a biscuit in Australia which yo can dunk in your tea. It's an awesome song. The writing, the piano, his voice . It's 👍
Gingernuts are also a thing in the UK
Which videos have you seen them give up before the ginger reveal?
I heard him say he wrote this when he realised the two words had the same letters. 😁 He's beyond brilliant IMO.
Thank you so much for this joyous episode. I have loved Tim Minchen for over a decade and was thrilled to see that his messages still resonate. You have also inspired me to offer reaction videos to my students. I will share you and discuss it in a lesson. And I will make my own because I share your natural enthusiasm and sincere laugh. Cheers. And btw live your accent and enunciation. So good for my students 😊🎉
My ginger family members copped all the insults he listed in the 80s and 90s in Australia. Bloody crack up of a song ey
HAHA. It was the same in Scotland when I was growing up too. All of the same insults as these ones mention. For sure mate, a brilliant song. Love it
He gets you to enjoy classical piano by using humor while including a social message. Totally awesome. Not many people pick up the Ginga (ending it with an a) part.
He got you good! 😂😂
As another commenter noted, gingernuts are a biscuit. A particularly hard biscuit, at least in Australia & New Zealand, thus dunking them into (hot) tea is how many people choose to eat them.
Of course, Tim absolutely knew how the lyrics "dipping my gingernuts into their ginger tea" would be taken as a sexual entendre...
Which is consistent with the theme of a song about how people can have knee-jerk reactions to language based on their own presuppositions.
(Am I wrong that most men are particularly repulsed by Tim's reference to tampons as a reference to people who have red hair? I mean, what could be worse than that? Periods, ugh!!)
Language can often hurt others in ways that may not be obvious to those who use words that they think are innocuous. Not about cancelling, just consideration of other people's experiences and feelings.
Thanks Lisanne. Actually we have Gingernuts in Scotland (where I am from) also and it also get's used as an insult for gineger people there too. Yes I think the point he made throughout this performance was very well made and I really agree with it all. haha I don't know if I was repulsed by the tampon reference but I was just shocked as it was unexpected and I have never heard that used as an insult before. Your last point is so true and I really agree with that also.
@@MertAus Hi Mat! As a Canadian, I actually doubt that I would have understood Tim's reference to gingernuts had I not spent 6 months in New Zealand as a landgirl on farms when I was 16 (in 1972, mostly in Kaikoura, S. Island -- 50 years ago!). If you are out mustering sheep on horseback for the day, gingernuts are the biscuit that withstand the jostling!
And I am sure the tampon reference came out of Tim's weird and wonderful imagination rather than some real world experience. Perhaps my use of the word "repulsed" was a bit extreme. Rather, I think many men (and some women) feel really uncomfortable talking about menstruation.
Loving your reactions to your videos
The ultimate bait and switch 😂
Great reaction! I’m a fellow ginger and never heard it as a reference to my hair color before I lived in Scotland for about 10 years! Now that I’m back in the States I hear it all the time . I guess because of Harry Potter being so popular here. Tim Minchin is great and I love all his songs, you can’t go wrong with any of them!
It is a wonderful song. It’s been around for over 10 years and I’m surprised I never heard it.
The subtitles! I was peeing myself.
And now for something completely different! This is Tim giving the main speech at the University of Western Australia Graduation Ceremony. Tim is an alumnus of UWA. I love it! czcams.com/video/yoEezZD71sc/video.html
Great reaction, so glad your enjoying his content! Must admit though that the captions were almost as funny as Tim. 😂
Loved your reaction 😄 I will keep my suggestions from last video, so maybe you will look into them 😄
- 3 minute song ( BBC version)
- Some people have it worse than I
- Not perfect (one of the more serious songs)
- Canvas bags (this song also carries an important message that is important for Tim, as he is an activist for greener environment)
- Carry you - one of newer Tims songs from album "apart together". It's a serious song, but also very beautiful 💜
Forgot to add - because it seems you really can appreciate nice piano playing, I would definitely recommend song "darkside"
Nice one mate. I will definitely have some of these coming soon.
@@MertAus Airport Piano is also great from the Apart Together album, the piano featured in the video was auctioned off for charity by Tim for a great deal of money a few months ago
I would love to see your reactions to 2 other Tim Minchin songs. One of them is called ‘Cont’, and is a VERY clever song. The other is ‘Not Perfect’ which is actually one of Tim’s more serious songs, but the juxtaposition of this song compared to his comedy songs, in my opinion, is truly beautiful.
Others that I do think you would like too are: Rock and Roll Nerd; Lullaby; and Canvas Bags
Another victim of Tim's epicly creative, absolutely intentional and unbelievably intelligent misdirection. Hahahaha.
Hahahahahahahahh I love this reaction x awesome accent too:)
Thank you so much. I am just happy if people can understand my accent haha
You can clearly see he is Australian - he doesn't wear shoes 😂❤
new sub from madrid mate!!l keep the good reactions :)
Thanks mate. I appreciate it!!
Just so you know, GINGER NUTS are a ginger biscuit here in Australia and they're best dipped into tea.
:)
Brits know ginger nuts
The subtitling on this is hilarious!
i love to think a about the moment Tim realized they were the same letters. I imagine there is a confusingly racist napkin left at a dinner somewhere...
ps the captions are ridiculous 🤣🤣
When I first heard this song I was outside my Grand daughter’s school several years ago. When she came out to go home I played the song because she was been abused by other kids for she is ginger. What she told afterwards caught me out. She didn’t worry about what others said to her, but they said to other gingers. She would talk to the ones that using the words to find out what problems they were going through that they had to pick on others to make themselves better. I am so proud of her.
So good!
Music degree n very clever with words... incredible...glad U love it...
Yeah such a clever guy. You can tell he is more intelligent than many other comedians out there. Very well written work.
Lmao, even his entrance had me dying. He just looks like he’s on some kind of hard drugs.
Don’t worry, this song gets EVERYONE!
And that’s his point
That is true. Thanks mate
Two songs that would be great one after the other, would be White Wine in the Sun, which he wrote for his baby daughter and Lullaby, which he wrote for his baby son. Then compare and contrast. Tim being serious and then Tim being somewhat mischievous.
That sounds really good. Yeah I will definitely check them out one after the other. It will be interesting to see the differences between them and his performances for each. Thanks Donna!!
Brilliant dry, dark humour.
It's what I love about UK humour. Going back to Yes Minister & other dead pan comedy.
Prince Harry is ginger whinger to some people
To see him go mad on the piano, Dark side the awesome version
Oh that sounds good. I like how every performance seems to showcase another talent he has. Really cool
Great Reaction as always. Here are a couple I would suggest.
If you want to see his Piano skills on display you MUST watch Dark Side (AWESOME VERSION). Make sure you watch the "awesome version".
Since you are British you would also enjoy Song for Wossy, 5 Poofs and 2 pianos, and 3 minute song.
I saw Tim in Concert in Dallas Texas years ago, it was one of the best shows I've ever seen.
Thanks for the suggestions TW. Dark Side will definitely be coming soon as many people have suggested that one. Wow that must have been an amazing experience to see him live. Hopefully I can see him one day also.
Brilliant reaction m8
Thanks Paul. I appreciate it!
Nice to see you down this rabbit hole, Tim has another side, best found in White Wine In the Sun (his Christmas Song) and Not Perfect, which I think of as a hymn for people who don't like hymns.
Awesome, thanks again for the suggestions. It is a great rabbit hole to be down
LULLABY. Written for his first child
Thanks Coreena. This one will be coming soon.
In Australia there's a lot of teasing for us redheads.
you could watch Tim's Lullaby song...
"I don't want to have to spell it out again" ... He got in trouble for another song on this topic and it got banned. This is his response.
Who on earth did the sub titles? 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ Great reaction though!
I think the subtitles are CZcams's own auto-translate so they are not the most accurate haha. Thanks!
They are funny in their own right 🤣
I'm sorry, but the subtitles had me rolling... they were so bad 🤣🤣🤣🤣😳😳😳 the song was totally different lmao 🤣 😂
gingernuts are biscuits in Oz
He's cool ay! Wrote the music to Matilda the musical as well. Stared as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar
A masterpiece, that he wrote while sitting on the John 😂
Wow haha. I guess people can get inspiration from many different places
Time to do Dark side (awesome version) 😊
My favorites:
You Grew On Me
If I Didn't Have You
Lullaby
Inflatable You
Not Perfect
My second tier faves of his:
Confessions
Some People Have it Worse
If You Really Loved Me
Drowned
Nothing Can Stop Us Now
Third Tier:
Dark Side
Rock 'n Roll Nerd
So Rock
(And all the songs you've done already)
If you exhaust all of that and still crave more I highly recommend most songs he wrote for Matilda the Musical.
Thanks Sabrina. Appreciate the suggestions. Lullaby will be uploaded on Wednesday this week.
You should definitely look into hsi recent album. Its not really comedy, but shows him more as a musician. Its incredible.
This was the first-ever song of Tim Minchin I ever heard. I had a musical comedy "channel" on Pandora a long time ago, and it eventually came on. I had no idea who Minchin was at the time, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't amused for what I thought was coming when he started spelling "the word." It took two listens before it finally sank in what he was saying. Lmfao.
haha that is a cool way to find an artist. Yeah I never expected him to say ginger at all. It took me a couple of seconds to realise what had happened. A very clever twist and the rest of the song was just top class.
Both of the words to which Tim refers in his song, use the same letters.
I know you might not read this since it’s on an older video, but you should react to Bo Burnham if you’ve never seen his stuff. He’s another musician/comedian and lists Tim Minchin as one of his inspirations
Pretty much every other reaction I have seen to this song has been by African-Americans, who of course have their own viewpoint on the subject matter (particularly the misdirection at the beginning of the song). This is the first reaction to the song I have seen by an actual, err, g-word (I am not qualified to use the word), so it is refreshing to see that perspective.
One talented Ozzie’s
One talented Ozzie‘s
Think about it
Will the scotch ever tell us that we use the wrong word?
If you haven't already, you need to hear Mitsubishi Colt
I've watched quite a few black Americans react to this and they're so in on the joke.
Look up darkside - awesome version by Tim. It's amazing
Try Confessions by Tim
That's the irony in his humour.
He isn't talking about gingers mate.
Political statement in a comedic way 😂
But sorta is at the same time. Reds cop so much in Australia. Especially at school... probably a Scottish throw back as we historically have had a big Scottish population. But that's pretty much why its such a genius song. Brilliant play on words.
Might be a bit much for a reaction vid, but you still should enjoy Tim's version of Judas in a more contemporary take of Jesus Christ Superstar. His lament before the exit stage tree is moving, to be sure.
Should watch him play Judus in Jesus Christ super star
Try ‘Song for Wossy’
Will do Chris. Thanks
Lol, the subtitles really had a hard time ^^
The subtitles were almost as funny as the actual lyrics.
Definitely dark side (awesome version) also confessions
The piano is phenomenal in Darkside (awesome version).
Ok will do David. Thanks for the suggestion
If you want to seem him playing the keys watch Dark Side the awesome version 😎
Thanks Adam. I uploaded that to my channel a couple of days ago. Was an amazing performance
Who did the lyric subtitles? I don't think they got a single line correct. 😂
Iz Oz, Ginger is kind of affectionate.. We also call redheaded people Blue (dont ask).. Our true 'insult' is "Ranga".. short for Orange/Orangutan
Just want to say that the subtitles are incorrect. For example where it say ginger tea it's meant to be ginger tear
For the algorithm
Thank you
It was all about the first word you thought of but using the second to highlight the first he couldn't use, with awesome background and experience of course... And probably a bit of the actual hypocrisy of 2 derogatory words just one having way more baggage
The point of the song was to talk about the topic without using offensive language. Notice how if you switch out the word ginger how the jokes still work e.g. when you go ginge/black you don't go back. He's not seriously talking about Ginger oppression.
For more religious foreplay, seek divine Tim Minchin intervention in "Woody Allen Jesus", "Thank You God" and my new favorite Christmas song "White Wine in the Sun" (although you may need some tissues when reacting to the latter)
They all sound great and I am especially intrigued by the Christmas. Will check them out soon James, thanks!
can u turn the captions off when ur reacting? they arent giving u the real lyrics
The subtitles were terrible but funny 😄
I think you should turn off the subtitles as youtube never gets them right. Oh and for reference "Ginger Nuts" are a popular biscuit in Australia.
Yeah I am going to turn them off for all future videos. It annoyed me a bit watching this back. Sorry about that. Thanks for telling me.
We also have Ginger Nuts in Scotland. Actually a very good biscuit but I can't get them as much over here in Malaysia unfortunately.
You compared him to Elton john? Please, please, please, PLEASE react to "Mitsubishi Colt" by him
The pope song the pope song the pope song
Man I hope you're not reading the closed captioning in this vid.
Just Aussie's, tampon
You comparing him to Elton John! Listen to Mitsubishi Colt
Man, those auto-generated subtitles were atrocious...
Is the person doing the sub titles deaf?
The CC was very annoying, since it was terribly wrong. Better skip it...
I sincerely hope there aren’t any people out there trying to learn English to a video like this. The auto-captions are hilarious but totally unrelated to the actual lyrics most of the time; only read them on a second watch. Just fyi. :)
There is no way this is the first time you've heard this song. I see you lip sync to it 3 times. Just be honest
Troll?
haha. Sorry it is just a weird habit I have when watching things, where I try to say the word I think will come next. It winds up my missus when we are watching stuff. Sometimes I'll guess right but mostly I'm wrong.
Total troll. Its a pretty repetitive and catchy song. Doesn't take long to be singing along.
@@alisont5464 not a troll or bot. I like his reviews just I don't believe this is the first time he heard it. I'm from Cornwall. Trolls are real down here btw
Youre not British. Youre Scottish.
For goodness' sakes turn off the subtitles! They are automatic and they get almost all of the words ridiculously wrong, and they are way too distracting.
Wow, this is so frustrating. I fear you miss so much from these songs the first time around, because instead of actually listening, you are so busy working out in your mind how to interrupt; that you miss crucial parts of many of the songs I have heard you listen to. I keep telling (shouting/yelling?) at you to just listen, but you don't hear..., and stop at key moments. Pity. I hope for your sake, you later go back and listen without thinking, absorb what is being sung, The brilliance of Tim's mind shines in his witty cynicisms and plays on words, his timing and eloquence. My advice to anyone who listens for the first time, is to savour the experience of Tim Minchin and not interrupt and miss anything.
Avoid the subtitles in future...what a distraction and so many words were just wrong.
Loving all the Tim content, hope it keeps coming. Minchin Mondays or a month of Minchin would be awesome. Love to see your reaction to some of his religion content. Stand up on religion, Thank you God, Woody Allen Jesus, Come Home Cardinal Pell and the Good Book are all genius works of art.
turn off your subtitles.
