Fossil Gen 6 Review: High Speeds, Hard Specs, Soft Wear

  • The best thing the smartwatch inherited from its traditional ancestors is the choice it gives you in styles - and for years, the biggest contributor to that diversity has been Fossil Group. If the relentlessly repetitive rectangles of the Apple Watch or the simplistic circles of Samsung just aren’t what you want on your wrist, Fossil and its partners have been there to sell you everything from edgy Armani to bedazzled Michael Kors to ... whatever craziness DIESEL is crankin’ out these days.
    For the past two years those watches have been based on Fossil’s Generation 5 platform - but I’ve spent two weeks with an early version of the sequel upon which the next generation will be built. I’m Michael Fisher; join me for the latest MrMobile review to see what there is to like (and lament) about the Fossil Gen 6 smartwatch!

    I think most reviewers are missing the point with the WearOS 3 update: How will the watches perform AFTER the update? There needs to be a second look review. I think it's not a big deal that the watch runs WearOS 2 as long as it gets a decent update but on the other hand seeing app support being pulled this fast is alarming especially for older watches.

    My first and only smartwatch that I use to this day is a trusty Fossil Gen 3 venture. I'm really a sucker for the more sleek and elegant designs by Fossil. But as much as I like the Gen 6 my Gen 3 still holds up for the simple stuff as showing notifications and being a remote for spotify. Do the newer gens offer something vastly superior or are they more of convenience upgrade?

  • @theColeHardTruth
    @theColeHardTruth Před 2 lety +146

    Man, this Google-Samsung partnership is really starting to look like Google abandoning Wear and handing it to Samsung.
    I gotta feel bad for Fossil, they've basically carried Wear on their back for the last 3 years and for their effort they're getting shafted. The Gen4 was my first ever smartwatch and made me fall in love with Google's smartwatch platform. Now, we get unreliable communication from Google, continual delays and questions being raised, and for what? More apps on the Galaxy watches? We still don't have anything resembling a timeframe for WOS3 on Ticwatch, much less Moto or Fossil!

    • @wmurch3
      @wmurch3 Před 2 lety +9

      totally agree... however maybe they are waiting to release the pixel watch before turning over wearos 3 to other manufacturers? getting it on the Samsung watches gives app vendors motivation to improve their apps in the meantime. idk... I'm probably wrong

    • @theColeHardTruth
      @theColeHardTruth Před 2 lety +9

      @@wmurch3 I don't know, if that was the case then wouldn't they be motivated to give it to Samsung and Fossil at the same time? Or at least closer? (As in, less than a year apart, as they seem to be doing now?) And even then, why not announce a project? Surely getting the hype started early by announcing a Pixel watch alongside the Samsung partnership would be a good idea? Then they're at least pretending to have faith in the OS...
      To me this seems just like Google is announcing they're giving up, but trying to make it look like the exact opposite. "Eat their cake and have it too," if you will...

    • @benjmiester
      @benjmiester Před 2 lety +13

      I think you might be right. It's funny I was just thinking the same thing with the Nexus program and what's happening with the Pixel. I know Samsung was technically the first Nexus manufacturer, but it seemed like Google had LG doing the heavy lifting for years and years and then HTC as well... they ate HTC's guts out and destroyed them, put LG out of the phone business, and then cancelled the best spec for your dollar lineup that was the Nexus for the wannabe iPhone Pixel line. I'm glad we got the camera know how from that, so it's not a total loss. But now it seems like they're basically doing like Wear and just kind of handing the keys to that back to Samsung as well in a way with them making Google's new chip and camera sensor apparently for the new Pixel. Could be a good in the end, Samsung makes some ok stuff but it is pretty shitty how they did these other companies along the way.

    • @wmurch3
      @wmurch3 Před 2 lety +4

      @@theColeHardTruth you could be right... I honestly have no idea what Google is thinking half the time (and I don't think they do either). The Samsung partnership is really strange the more I think about it. It doesn't really showcase Wear Os 3 at all and doesn't even have Google Assistant... The bedrock of any Google device. Google must have come to Samsung and met all of their demands to save them from themselves.

    • @theColeHardTruth
      @theColeHardTruth Před 2 lety +5

      @@wmurch3 That's what I'm thinking. And while it would have been a shame to do so, if they had just announced that they're giving the keys to Samsung it would have at least been some sort of self-aware acknowledgement and a lot more respectful to those who they've essentially been ignoring all these years...
      My dream would have been for Google to give the keys for Fossil instead; their battery optimizations and under-the-hood improvements to WOS2 have done well to patch the OS to be great IMO. In case you couldn't tell I really don't like the way Samsung operates and much prefer the way Fossil handles their operations, but even I have to admit there's no way that Google would partner with them.

    I've been an Android Wear user since the LG G Watch R and I love my smart watches. My current Fossil Gen 5 has been my "checks all the boxes" watch for a while now. My one gripe with it is the rotating crown gets very gummed up over time with no feasible way to fix that other than contacting Fossil and sending my unit in for repair (usually takes a month or so). On the other side of things, I've always loved the fluidity of the Samsung watches and especially the rotating bezel but could not stand to part with Google Assistant. I was hoping Fossil would adopt the rotating bezel and bring Wear OS 3 to the Gen 6 at launch. I think the new Samsung watch needs a fair bit of software love to get things to where I want but would be my choice over the Fossil. Gen 6 seems to be my Gen 5 with bumped specs and different shell.

    It would be cool to see what the battery life is like without Facer installed (using some of the stock watch faces, or some found on the Play Store), and then perhaps compare it to when you do have Facer installed.

    I might say i am kind of happy with the TicWatch E3, but i can feel the bugs and problems, also I'm not using as much as a regular person might, one of the reasons is because I can't carry a charger to the place where unlike to take the watch, full weekends outdoors and hard conditions makes me think a lot about using the pins of the strap as a charger (that's why I asked) because it's already there, you can charge while in a bike ride knowing it won't disconnect, also you might be able to have an strap with extra juice to run the watch with battery for longer periods of time.

      Agree with @cstavaru about Samsung being the gold standard for battery life. What was bizarre was their last Tizen effort. They had been making 3-5 day watches for years and I was ready to buy the Samsung watch 3 (I think it was that) until I found out that the battery took a huge step backward.
      And Fossil and everyone else is still/forced to use these garbage snapdragon chips. The 4100+ is built on a 12nm process, whereas the galaxy WearOS watch uses a exynos w920 built on a 5nm process. That's why Samsung is able to build a WearOS watch that's 9.8mm thick and I'll be shocked if the gen 6 is any thinner than 12mm (couldn't find anyone providing that dimension, but the gen 5 was 12mm thick). The "next-gen" snapdragon 5100 is also shaping up to be a dumpster fire. I'm always surprised that Qualcomm's platforms for the one platform that needs better battery life even more than smartphones is relegated to these large die process, battery hog chips. Screw you Qualcomm and the 🐎 you rode in on.

    I have to be honest, between the WearOS situation, the Apple Watch being pretty much locked down to Apple's ecosystem, and my own watch preferences (at least having analogue hands, without exception), I just can't get excited for smartwatches. They're neat - the reason I keep watching smartwatch reviews is _because_ they're neat, and I think they genuinely benefit people, but for me, they're just not what I want at this point in time. I've spent time using them too, but they're just not for me.
    Maybe one day we'll get a proper smartwatch (not those "hybrid" ones that don't do a lot extra) with a screen over top of a genuine clock mechanism, whose features work on whatever phone you want to pair it with instead of some arbitrary limitations Samsung implies aren't there but definitely are, but until then, I'll likely just keep admiring them from afar.

      @Kiel Enrique To be fair, if you were already into watches, and willing to pay the premium for said watches, I can see why smartwatches would be a bit of a no brainer
      Basically paying the same ish price for something that does a lot more, so why not at that point

      @@lolagepwned Same here. For now I just use cheap fitness band for HR and Sp02 tracking during exercise and sleep, and use my regular citizen watch for other occasions. I might buy the ticwatch pro 3 once it has gotten the update to wearOS 3.

      The "Dream Watch" you describe is STILL BASICALLY A HYBRID. The Fossil Hybrid and Garmin range has gone a long way in discreetly making you smarter than your neighbor.. sometimes you need to shift the post in order to be satisfied.

    Nice video as ever. Something I don't get with smart watches is the battery on my Galaxy gear sport, three years old now, still hold battery for a day and a half... With sleep mode on during the evening. Always on display, notifications going like crazy.... And it's still a day and a halfer on battery life. I just don't see what's to gain yet by the newer generation of smart watches.
    And I still have my original Sony Ericsson Live view from 2010, and not much has changed lol... They still cost way too much for what you get.

    Only just noticing from your video that the watch face display seems to cut off a couple of mm from the edge. What's the point in having a larger watch if you're not going to use all of the space? Especially when Wear OS on round watch faces already cuts off certain aspects of the display ('Hey Google' questions/answers for example)

    Went out and bought the gen 6 after watching this review, I have to admit the screen size is quite noticeably smaller and has a bigger frame than my q explorist gen 4, but it runs a lot smoother so I guess it's worth the trade off.
