In this diagnosis, i am troubleshooting a vehicle that has cooling fans that keep running with KOEO or KOER. I emphasize some testing methods that will help determine the culprit problem between the fan control module or ECM unit. This cooling fan operation is a module to module communication. For more information about module to module communication and pull down circuit design, check out "scannerdanner" CZcams channel.

easy fix is to get a hot air gun and apply heat to the back till its hot enough to melt the solder and create contact again. i have done it many times it works, also if you can relocate the controller to less heat

My 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer cool/hot gauge went to H 2 days out of the blue, never had any problems with it. I stop the car and then waited a bit and drove it home from work with the needle mid way as usual... The next morning, same thing -drove to work with needle mid way between cool and hot which is normal but when I was ready to go home at the end of the day, as soon as I put the key in, it went all the way to hot. I checked the coolant and it was full to the top and green. I did not check the water reservoir, I have no idea about that. I figured the fact the car was standing all day in the hot sun here in FL so I had to wait a while for the sun to be less stronger and attempted to drive home... I had to stop 2x when the needle went to Hot but as I got on the highway and the air hit the car, the needle stayed halfway. I drove all the way to the mechanic and left the car there. This morning the mechanic said he change the thermostat but it still goes all the way to Hot when he turns on the car, and he mentioned the fan not stopping but my car fans ran a little while after the car was shut off then they'd stop. At this point he has no idea what is wrong with the car and I don't know if it's worth to fix it, especially if he doesn't know what is wrong with it.. he mentioned something about the water pump or an air pocket in the engine? Im lost . Also I have been driving the car without AC for 5-6 years in FL. I don't want to spend a lot of money fixing a car that is not worth fixing unless you know about cars... What do you think? The car has a lot of problems but it was drivable in the past... that's all I need something to take me back and from work. 30 miles round trip a day.

We are having almost the same problem with our Mitsubishi Lancer CS3 2008. We switched off the AC and then after 10 minutes of being stuck with traffic, we noticed the temp gauge at around 80%. We stopped to let it cool down. After few minutes, we started the engine with AC on and the temp went OK. We brought the unit to the service shop and they noticed that the radiator fan is working but delayed and not as fast as it should be. They said these are all the items that should be replaced. We did not push through with the repair because their parts are very pricey (almost $550). Should we proceed with purchasing the controller first instead of following the service center? Looks like your video is relatively reliable. Thank you

Good video, only issue I have is that the control signal I believe is pwm based, so although yes its 0v-5v that is obtained by varying pwm to get those voltages ( rather than resistor to ground), I could be wrong.
Is there a good value obd unit you would recommend for this vehicle that can connect to all computers on the vehicle?
I believe its mitsubishi mut2 protocol, and the cheaper elm type devices will not connect to all the ecus.

    • @EliTheOBDTech

The 5 volts that come from the module is there as a reference Voltage to the pcm. The pcm needs to see 5v in order to oprate the fans. The pcm will provide the ground depending on input sensors.

Now we changed the FCM but still 🤷🏻‍♂️. It's so annoying. Checked the signal wire output and its a bit weird because it doesn't cut the ground when the fan is supposed to be on 🤷🏻‍♂️

+Simon flores My only explanation that i could thing of, is either you installed the ignition switch wrong or you have a short to ground ignition wire on pin 1. As you can see on the diagram, the ignition wire is yellow. Somewhere between the ignition switch and Starter relay, you have a short to ground, which is causing your relay to energize as soon as you put the negative battery cable. I would try to trace your yellow ignition wire all the way to the starter relay. Good luck!!

Try this; disconnect the condenser fan motor connector. Ensure that the A/C switch is off, and start the engine and run it at idle. Measure the voltage between the fan controller-side connector terminals(not harness side connector). Standard value: 1 volt or less. Turn the A/C switch to the ON position. Measure the voltage between the fan controller-side connector terminals while the fan is running. The voltage should repeat the values 1 and 2.
      Standard value:
      1. 8.2 +/- 2.6v
      2. Battery positive voltage +/- 2.6v
