I like how Olivia Palermo carries herself and Steve Job's personality. I'd want to handle my image the way they do/did. The Turks and the Provencal French have a very nice etiquette, that's classical, but feels warm and friendly. Finally, I liked Beatrice's wedding, and how she showed taste and restraint. I'd feel comfortable attending it, yet it was exciting to look at. I guess that's my taste in style.

Anna, your list doesn't just describe "new money" people. It also describes a new type I see in our current culture: people who desperately want to appear wealthy, but are actually broke! This is a very generational phenomenon. Because of social media comparison, fast fashion and the abundance of cheap, knock-off accessories and decor, it's easier for people to pretend they are like both new AND old money. Interestingly, I grew up in the 70's and 80's, where this was not possible. I have a few distant, wealthy relatives from England. By today's standards, they would be considered minimalists! Everything was very good quality. But, their wardrobe was just basic, classic pieces. They ate a rather plain, ordinary diet and watched their portions. They walked for exercise. Their biggest indulgences were books and the theatre. What we can learn from both time periods is that it's important to work on our inner selves and our self worth. Then, hopefully, self-discipline and modesty around money will follow.

Actually that's a thing but maybe people that try to appear rich are at their first steps of getting wealthy. We can't really blame them for wearing Cartier or Tiffany. Unless they are neglecting their primary needs to do so. But yes we shouldn't get obsessed with these kinds of things as we may lose the point of living life and enjoying the moment basically.
A lot of Anna's teachings have more to do with valuing social education than actual income. Of course, you will have more "prospects" if you can move easily in any atmosphere. But following this guidance can also improve your life at any level of wealth. A person can lose their money in a flash, but your personal image will always be a never-ending source of success. You may fall madly in love with a poor person. Or get a job in a startup company just building their financial success. Maybe you are the company owner and want the true respect and loyalty from your team. Acting like a rude or distasteful person is not impressive to the non-wealthy either. Ask anyone who serves the public.
@@alisonfraser8231 I completely agree with you. It's also a matter of empathy. We all start from somewhere. Even if we come from a wealthy family we have to learn from scratch how to maintain this income. It's so important to remember where we started from and not underestimate people. No matter their background.
I grew up in a pretty “wealthy” home, and my friends always called my family rich just because our house was nice but being honest, My parents just knew how to spend wisely, save money, and cut back on a lot of things to be able to have nicer things that were more important. They were wealthy without having “rich” jobs, if that makes sense. I’m so happy they thought me to be wise with money because a lot of people don’t realize it’s not about income but how humble and smart you are about it.
lol sounds like my kids. Their parents "do well" but I wouldn't say that we are "rich" We, as you point out, know where and how to spend our money and where to invest. Honestly, we save/invest more than we spend. If thefre is something that we want, we can have it(within reason) We are a different generation. For many of us, our self worth isn't wrapped up in money or possessions. This vlogger makes me nuts. You're parents taught you well. You will have a comfortable life as well, I am sure.
Same with my parents and I am very grateful about it. I was maybe 13-14 when I realised that my parents have quite a bit more money than my friends’ parents. However even though we were well off, I still had to do chores and my parents did not buy us everything we wanted. I went to a good school, a good university (and I am extremely grateful to not have student loans), and my parents definitely gave us opportunities that others did not have, but they were choosy about what to spend money on. I am very grateful for this and for having been thought good manners, politeness, kindness to others, etc.
Same here. My parents did the same, but they also were business owners as well as employees for other people.
You just described middle class very well, and it's elitist. Many people are born in to poor but proud families. They might not have nice homes, but have class because their parents raised them to make the most of what they have and to aspire through education and opportunities elsewhere to live better lives.

Idk about that lol. My family makes mid 100 thousands yet we live a like 45k a year lifestyle if I had to guess. It sounds like your parents likely spent a crap ton if they only were middle or upper middle class. Otherwise you are low rich like 200-300k a year plus household income. Which granted isn’t obscene wealth but it is rich especially to kids

I love that. It certainly makes sense. Reminds me of some of the wealthy classmates I grew up with, you would never know they had a lot of money. They were very humble and quiet about it.

I met a girl she's married to an American guy but here she was very poor and lived in a dangerous neighbourhood closed to slums but when she moved to USA she was bragging and showing off her credit cards given by her husband and his car and all the stuff he bought for her and she also got pregnant very fast ... She's so lane and it reflects bad on women from this country ... We don't want to be seen as golddiggers
I am far from rich but I have just moved to a western european country from eastern europe which meant a large increase in my income and lifestlye. After living in Austria for 6 months I wanted to purchase that gucci bag so bad.. but then I thought I should not spend anything I saved up as soon as I became rich compated to myself. So I took the price of that gucci bag, bought a michael kors bag (not the polyester ones with disgusting logos, i purchased a truly elegant and sophisticates tote with very very small logo and soft leather), and invested the rest in secure ETFs and a Master Degree Programm.
I used to be poor and wanted to compete with those insta girls back then. I used to think I will go back to the East with that LV monogram bag and go to that fancy snobbish club, now I feel I never ever want to belong those circle. Looking forward to this video 😊

A lot of people down-talk Michael Kors, but he does make some beautiful pieces. I have a rich, chocolate brown Mercer tote that I bought nearly four years ago. It still looks as good as new and the leather just gets better with age! You made the right choice, sis! 😉

Recently I worked in a very wealthy household with some house guests.. One of the gentlemen there was very quiet, unassuming and polite. He was friendly but not too friendly and always considerate. On the day he left he came to my room and gave me a large tip for going out of my way to be kind and helpful to his family and told me I was a beautiful person. After he left I found out he was a 'Prince' from one of the oldest families in Europe. I've met lots of royalty and old money.. they've been some of the most respectful people I've worked for. I've also worked for VERY wealthy new money and the contrast was stark.

@@evka24 Yes and my mother used to say 'money can't buy class ' as in manners. Anyone can be classy, regardless of where they come from, with a little effort and guidance. And I truly believe it has nothing to do with being wealthy.
New money comes with over the top insecurity, so concerned about appearance and perception they're consumed by what everyone would think or say their appearance becomes a 24/7 paranoia, a toxic obsession.

On a practical side, you can not become rich on your own. You need the help of your employees or the service people. If you treat them bad they will leave you. Old money have loyal people working for them for ages. Empathy and high emotional quotient are needed on your way to success.
Money just multiplies who you already are. If you are poor and humble, you'll be rich and humble. If you're poor and ostentatious, you'll be rich and ostentatious. It's not the money that makes some of the nouveau riche so crass, it's that they already were, their new money just took it to another level🤷🏾♀️

Yes. While I am on only Facebook, it's only to quietly see what friends & family are up to. Posts are rare, and NEVER about private matters. No pictures. It is extremely distasteful seeing people pose and take pictures of themselves. Including standing in front of mirrors to do so! And then posting their entire lives.
Yes, all that excessive photography and posting in social media of luxury items screams tacky! Elegance is an inner attitude, not necessarily associated with things, no matter how expensive they are.

I'm currently 'no money' but I was brought up to be respectful of people and have confidence in my own self-worth, and to value everything I work to own. Showing off and disrespecting people is crass at any income bracket.

I agree about the Birkin, it was “old money” years ago. Today it is quite nouveau riche, still elegant but not understated. I believe it will lose status amongst the high society in 5-10 years. it will be seen on fashionistas and influencers more than on affluent ladies who will find something less flashy and common.
@@wowthatspeng I think that new/old money today is simply a style choice, it doesn’t actually show your wealth source. many “new money” people dress “old money” simply because it is more humble and elegant, like Anna herself. The nouveau riche style won’t necessarily radiate “self-made”.

Many of the "social media new rich" aren't wealthy at all, rather, they're in debt up to their eyeballs.
They may take selfies with all sorts of luxury goods, but 10 minutes later they might be returning them to the shop.
True wealth, old money, does not need to advertise that they have money.
When you have enough money to go buy a dozen of some luxury item it loses it’s significance. It’s not so luxurious or exclusive anymore and it’s not as impressive. Part of it is not wanting to display it and the other part is making enough that I just don’t care. Also even though I could afford the item it’s still irresponsible and a better use of the money would be to invest it. I’m also of the opinion that family money should not be used for personal spending like high end watches, overly expensive cars, etc.
The best tip anyone ever gave me was to find a good seamstress. However much you pay for a garment it will look cheap if it does not fit properly. So even if you save money on the garment pay a little extra to have it tailored. It will not cost much. I got married in my Mum's dress. The seamstress changed and tailored it for me which cost a fraction of buying a new dress and the old one had lace that you just cannot buy anymore. It was unique.

I'm not used to share much of my life in social media, I find it so unnecessary since I'm 20. I found out that I enjoyed much of my life in private I really recommend it

I grew up dirt poor. Many times there was no food to eat. Now I’ve acquired some wealth through my hard work. I like nice things and I buy what I want if I want. I keep a small circle and I’m not the type to show off. At the end of the day I made my money no one pays my bills but me so I can care less what others think.
As someone who came from the literal ghetto, on food stamps and government assistance and now I’m considered “high income” it’s to easy to slip up and do some of these things. I definitely recorded bottle service in the club last night 😭 but I’m growing up and getting there

It's ok to enjoy a moment and share it with others. Especially if you are proud of escaping poverty by your own hard work. Measuring your worth only by your ability to do these things is the real trap. Don't kid yourself. Old money debauch themselves regularly. They just keep it behind the castle walls and don't invite the neighbours. You are as good as anyone, my dear, just as you are!

This reminds me of a passage from the Book of Phillipians 2: 33 Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You can tell a lot about people by how they treat others, and money does not necessarily make you a decent human being, in fact, in my experience “new money”people are quite self absorbed and narcissistic.

What I take from this is that money doesn't buy class. Another way of putting it is "confidence is quiet". You don't have to go shouting about what you already are confident about.
Some people will never be old money or classy no matter how much cash they stack.
Being too flashy in certain places definitely makes you a target to get robbed!

When I was 9 years my father bought an airplane that could accommodate our family... none of my friends at school had airplanes... so I've heard things and saw facial expressions that taught me be more reserved and "low profile". Besides, you have to be ready because money sometimes don't last... 1 one night stock can go to zero. Focus on your internal strength and knowledge because they can last forever.

We all know one is treated in a different way just because they come across as wealthy.
Elegant, sophisticated rich people oftentimes look really wealthy as well, it's just a more subtle, "calmer" type of weath compared to the nouveau riche. It comes across as more educated and elegant.

I have worked for wealthy people and I discovered they have many of the same problems that everyone else has... failed multiple marriages, lost of large amounts of money children on drugs and in jail, illegitimate kids I could go on and on!
They just have highly paid attorneys to bail them out!

Very well explained. I think it boils down to understanding your privilege, as a wealthy person, and not wanting to make others feel inferior, uncomfortable or awkward because they don't have that wealth, whether in person or on your instagram.
That is showing good manners. That is elegance.
Yes we had money ,the house had damp the stair carpets were threadbare,
The kitchen cupboard doors were all falling off.
It was freezing unless you sat on a fire ,
But we ate from the garden every day ,we wore lots of jumpers to keep warm ,
We helped people especially staff who were old ,who still stayed on .
We didn't go away much ,
We bought British only ,we mended ,we recycled, we walked places .

I once went on a date with a guy, who had much more $ than me. He was super rude to the waitstaff, I never even ordered. I excused myself, found d the waiter, tipped them and said that guy was trash, and left.

I was in the same class with these two brothers who always dressed modestly, like nothing flashy ab them at all. They're also polite and funny, and we were great friends. I also grew up in a middle-upper class kinda family and personally met and were friends with many rich flashy kids. That's why I had very different perception on how being rich looked like. I didn't even think ab the possibility that they could be rich, I thought they're just normal middle-upper class like me (the school we went to had pretty high tuition fees so most families needed to be somewhat middle-upper class so I just assumed). One day, I saw the dad of these two brothers came to get them at school and he drove a very fancy Mercedes. This was 15 years ago so not many people I knew owned that brand. I started to notice them more, and I realised those modest polos they often wore were from Burberry. Apparently they're good quality so their mum bought them and they just wore whatever was given. They were so different from my other rich friends.
MY grandfather was well off, and I don't remember him ever having a brand new car. He drove the same old orange pick-up truck for decades. And the last house he lived in, he literally built himself from the ground up, including digging his own well. Nothing flashy or ostentatious about it, but thanks to him I have some very nice 19th century silver and a quality education.

I rather be a minimalist. Have quality vs quantity. Spend money on classic pieces for my wardrobe, buy excellent quality food, good books and travel extensively. Stay on fantastic hotels, etc. I don't need to walk around with labeled purses nor shoes. I find that very tacky.
You've really helped me moving on from being one of these girls that show off this stuff to someone more nonchalantly and private/discreet. I like it way better this way. It's also so much more elegant.

Sadly, during this pandemic I have seen cashiers screamed at, spit on and items thrown at them. I know of a store General Manager having been punched in the face. I know of Pharmacists that have been beaten.
This incredibly poor behaviour is never acceptable, but seems to be more prevalent across all social economic levels.
I have always felt that how you treat others is really more important than so many other aspects of life, and it has been such a clear indicator of whom I would like to include in my life.
This infuriates me. No matter who it is, everyone deserves respect and to be treated correctly. Even if one has to make a complaint, it can be done politely and without denigrating the other person.
I have definitely caught myself being less kind and polite than I’d have wished at times (especially when being stressed and then sometimes doesn’t go smoothly), but I have also in the past gone back in a cafe and apologised for being rude to someone.

On the flip side I have seen staff that abused and bullied the customers. Neither is appropriate.
I started buying luxury things secondhand. Not only am I saving a ton of money but I am also spending less on a higher quality item than I would if I just bought something at say Forever 21 or H&M. I got a near brand new Coach bag at the Goodwill last week for $10. All I had to do was clean it and the bag looked pristine.

So true. My parents were "New Money". but very understated. I grew up in an old money neighborhood and went to old money private education. As a young adult I was forever amused by hearing typical New Money people believed they made it in to the Old Money club. Nope. You made it to a money club but that is all. Two different worlds! In Mexico we have an old saying that comes from France about this subject and says "Nobleza obliga" (Noblesse oblige, Nobility obliges) and means the most fortunate and privileged (not only wealthy people) must have an honorable and classy demeanor because with privilege comes responsibilities.

I'm so glad my grandmother taught me proper dining etiquette. That was her exact phrase: "dining with the Queen." Now, teaching my own children has proven to be quite the task! I am hoping by the time they are 10 or so they finally get it. 😮💨

I grew up with parents who probably aren't the best at saving money. I've grown up in council house and wasn't given the best life but I am grateful. My mum did the best she could as a single mum of us 3 children and we always had nice things as children. I still live with my mum as I'm only nearly 18 years old. Now as a young adult istead of spending loads on accessories, bags and clothing that you've pointed out I spend money on things that I need, that aren't overly expensive not excess spending or to "prove a point" to people. I'm a lot more clever with money and smart with it than being aloud with it. Instead of spending £100s on branded material I still dress nicely on a lower budget so I can save up for other things, such as my driving licence this year🥰
I had worked in the service industry for a few years. I will tell you this, I always knew who actually had money and who was just showing off. And yes, they were treated differently.

I'm from Brazil, and I'm poor in the Brazilian reality. That is, I do not belong to the reality you speak about. But your idea about the best way to live in a rich world is very interesting: I can see simplicity and sophistication together. From the clothes and makeup to the way you gesture and speak. It makes me want to keep watching your videos even if the context doesn't apply to me.
I always felt bad when I saw new money having fun and enjoying life, some kind of unwanted and uncomfortable enviousness take me, but a video like this brings back me to reality, rationally explaining the situation... It calms me down knowing that I am not the only one who looks at this kind of lifestyle with a suspicious eye, THANK YOU ✨
Showing off is exhausting. It is not fun. I think many are in a perpetual state of fear, thinking they actually are not good enough or that they will lose it all. They often are spending beyond their means.
@@tamick2000 I’ve wondered that while seeing pictures being flaunted on social media. “How much are you really enjoying the moment if you’re so busy making sure everything looks perfect for your photo?” I recently went out to dinner and noticed a group of girls next to my table taking pics posing, smiling laughing……but after the photo they all stayed on their phones and didn’t even interact with each other! 🤔 what’s going on here??
trust me ive seen the new money crowd theyre not actually having fun like they are on social media as soon as the phone recording stops for stories theyre energy and fun also stops even in their so called destanations theyre not actually having the time of their lives

My family taught me it is all about how wise you are with your money. Elegance doesn't come with money. Education, sustainability, compassion and looking after yourself and the planet is much more important than materialistic things. Caring for yourself and others draws me to people more than wealth ever will. It's the person inside that shows, you can't hide that with expensive jewellery, clothes and cars.

From working around people of many levels of wealth I've seen its rarely ever flashy unless a situation calls for frivolity, like the Kentucky Derby for instance. Subdued, classic, even way under the radar. The money is invested and working for them, not their wardrobe! And they usually invest the spendable amounts in expensive hobbies or leisure pursuits like race horses, horse riding, exclusive golf/clubs, ect. Where you actually have to be sponsored in order to join. So, enjoy new money ( but please do it elegantly🙂) , it's yours after all but the old money are circles that are hard to enter.
on the other hand, as an up & coming woman from ky, it was so terribly boring that few people dressed up. I think to a degree horse people are *too* down to earth. I think there's a healthy middle of a crowd that's wealthy and modest but also show the part.
I mean, i want there to be that type of crowd. I also think age is a huge factor that wasn't addressed in a super nuanced way. Young people (20s, early 30s lets say) want to go out and dress up and live life. Their lifestyle will be and honestly should be different from an older wealthier crowd. There are different life priorities and goals. Idk. I just remember being sick of how boring KY was despite also being around lots of levels of wealth there.
I have never liked showing off, wearing everything that's trendy. We were always on the poor side but people always thought that I came from a well off family. I saved and bought items that were classy and I can't say it is something I was taught by my parents of any family members. I often think it was something in my DNA. Maybe my ancestors were wealthy. Some people are born naturally drawn to elegance. You give the best advice Anna. I especially like that you remind us that being polite and we'll mannered is also a part of being elegant.
Interestingly, many of the most wealthy people I know never show it. They seem like any average household. Infact, if you didn't know them, you would never know how wealthy they really are.

So I returned them & invested in starting my own business.

The wealthy old money people I’m aware of go to greater lengths to hide their wealth and avoid being flashy at all costs due to security/safety reasons.
I absolutely agree about the attitude. The people with generational wealth I’ve met probably have more in common with the working class in some ways than new money. They respect people regardless of social status and appreciate hard work.
On the being rude to people. Money or not how you treat people shows your true character. Love your points. Stay blessed and healthy.

I like both. I believe new money takes more risks and are more interesting to look at but they have a tendency to look gaudy, such as wearing head to toe brand monograms. On the other hand, old money are classicly elegant but tend to be boring and aging. Think Chanel tweed suits, I love them but it ages young people that's why Lagerfeld changed the design in the 90's to appeal to younger people. Having a good balance is best and I feel like Kate Middleton embodies this best.
I find Kate Middleton looks old because of the way she dresses. Not youthful at all.

@@ByteMwen I understand what you are saying and agree that some of her style choices have aged her. In my opinion, it's mainly because British royalty have very strict rules on dresswear. Such as skirts must be at the knee, no showing your arms etc. But considering all the restrictions, she still manages to look elegant and slightly younger than her much older peers. When her engagements aren't so strict, she likes to wear jeans, blazers and palazzos. If she were an ordinary person, I believe she would make bolder style choices but since she represents the monarchy and they are abit stuffy, so she has to curb her enthusiasm. I guess the trade-off with being elegant all the time is that it will age the person 🤷♀️ But at the end of the day, she looks like an absolute lady that anyone can admire.
That's why I adore Melania Trump...her style is out of this world...she is elegant and decent but she does not look old at all!

Hi Anna, I used to work as an au pair for a very wealthy family. Their
wealth has come from generations in the past. What was interesting to me they had no interests in LV, Chanel, Rolex etc or showing off their wealth. Yes, they had expensive things but with no logos on it. They spent a fortune on food (being honest I have never looked any better in those times I guess because of incredible quality of food I had opportunity to eat), antiques (expensive pianos etc), and relaxations (like having the newest generation saunas at home). However, the most important was for them the time with family. Personally I felt really appreciated by them and they believed and encouraged me to apply for study that I did not believe I would get into it. A few years later I am where I am and I am grateful for every day of my life. I also would like to add I really enjoy your videos, mainly the way how you present the content.

You are so classy in how you explain things. I agree so much about service and etiquette- for example pouring wine for yourself first, improper placement of cutlery when you are finished eating, not using a napkin on your lap, being rude to service staff etc. Great video!💘

My father in law had money, but he never flashed it or was into showing off. In fact I was always surprised at how simply he dressed. He had taste but wasn't into "flexing" whatsoever. Always nice and polite too. You'd never know he had much more than an average person.

The more wealth I accumulate, the more I realize my desire is really to be authentic and free to be and enjoy what I desire. I have no wish to live like anyone else, or make anyone feel badly for the circumstances they are in. We attract what we feel we deserve, and I would want all those around me to feel as rich and abundant in life as I feel…even while wearing my BOGS around the back pond, or while enjoying that expensive dream vacation..

Chic travel spots change about every three years, but if you have a travel agent from an organization that deals with upper-class clients, you will be able to keep up with such changes.” I recommend her book.
My step father was from old money (Britain) and from my experience they travel to uncrowded places that spark their interests. They love a good adventure and to find themselves in unique and beautiful places. Old money usually avoid tourist traps and spend time in lesser known secret gems. Alot of the time they enjoy being in nature and are true naturalists/conservationists. You may find them fishing on a beautiful river, exploring hidden hot springs, chasing the northern lights, or on a Safari. You're more likely to find them on a trail ride through the Rocky mountains than the Cannes festival. One thing for sure is old money does not like to waste their money and they usually don't like feeling crowded.

I have never liked following trends, especially fast fashion trends and social media trends. The only time I gave into these types of trends was when I was a teenager and wanted to fit in with my friends (there’s a type of peer pressure that happens during this period) which made me more likeable and more popular. By the time I was finishing university I completely stopped following these trends and became more myself, also stopped caring if I was liked or popular. I’m only 25 and I still see much older women without the same maturity as me, desperate for social media attention and following all possible trends. This video really highlights what’s happening to society: being trashy is trendy. The Kardashians have really contributed to this.
I love this video. I'm not the most elegant but I can always learn and listen. This is an honest list. I giggled a little bit at #5. That's usually the, "if you don't have stamps all over your passport, we cant relate" crowd. They're always so classist relating to travel. Some of us have family to take care of or other financial demands. I love travel but I would never look down on someone because they cant regularly. I had a man chide me about not having been to many places. It was one of the weirdest bar convos I ever had. He approached me to reprimand me.

About fifteen years ago I acquired several name brand items for very little money (I found them in a thrift shop). The items served me well for the past 15 years, so after they finally "bit the dust" I decided to invest in one of the items new (right off the rack).......I don't know what has happened, but after spending a small fortune the item I purchased only lasted for the season. The quality of the name brand things somehow have gone downhill!!! It kind of made me rather upset. I had fallen in love with my item and wanted to continue supporting the company buying repeat buying that particular item........now I don't buy anything new, in fact I have gone back to thrift store to look for vintage name brand as well as actual vintage garments that really stand the time. Name brand doe not necessarily mean quality either anymore.
As long as it doesn’t include my car 🙏🏾, please as an independent woman I worked hard and hustled for my luxury car lol. I am considered new money. I can be materialistic but I refuse to pay for a damn Birkin Bag. Lol.
