  • This is the NHTSA NCAP side pole crash test for 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan (second generation).
Introduced in 2015, the model is currently being assembled at VW's plants in Wolfsburg, Puebla and Kaluga. The Tiguan and the Audi Q3 are built on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.
NHTSA New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) Side Pole Impact:
A small-sized adult female crash test dummy is placed in the driver's seat and is secured with a seat belt. The test vehicle, angled at 75 degrees, is then pulled sideways at 20 mph (32km/h) into a 25-cm diameter pole at the driver's seating location. This test mimics a side impact crash involving a narrow, fixed object like a utility pole or tree. 1 star is the lowest rating; 5 stars is the highest. More stars equal safer cars.
    Overall Rating: TBD
    Overall Front Star Rating: TBD
    Front Driver Side: TBD
    Front Passenger Side: TBD
    Overall Side Star Rating: 5-Star
Combined Side Barrier and Pole Ratings (Front Seat): TBD
Combined Side Barrier and Pole Ratings (Rear Seat): TBD
    Side Barrier Rating: TBD
    Side Barrier (Driver): TBD
    Side Barrier (Rear Passenger): TBD
    Rollover Star Rating: 4-Star
The rollover rating measures the risk of rollover in a single-vehicle, loss-of-control scenario.

I believe it would be relevant, if the actual speed was included on the placards identifying the vehicle, etc.
At what speed was the crash preformed ?

If the impact was on the driver-side, why did the passenger curtain airbag deploy?

      For extra protection.

Think of it like a coup-contrecoup (hit, counter-hit) brain injury: The brain is jolted towards one side of the skull with the first hit (coup), then slamming back against the opposite side creating the second hit (contrecoup)... Similarly, bodies will jolt towards side of initial impact, then slam back. The side curtain airbag deploying on the passenger side insures that when that contrecoup happens, there's at least some* protection.
May seem counterintuitive (contre-intuitive?), like the airbag will add to that initial jolt by forcing occupant towards initial impact - and in some cases it very well might - but that potential harm is less than that of the harder strike of the occupants' heads against the rigid structure of the vehicle upon the contrecoup.
