In case you're wondering, there's a weird reason that the furniture and other items appear as leaves. Tom Nook is referred to as a racoon in the English-language versions, but he's meant to be a tanuki, also called a racoon dog, a critter that is native to Japan.
In Japanese folklore, tanuki were thought to have certain magical powers, including the ability to transform leaves and stones into other objects. Which makes it even funnier to me, because it potentially implies Nook may just sell random leaves he picks up that he changes into furniture. He's an even bigger con artist than you might realize.

As soon as I saw him not using the nunchuck, it made me upset because it tells you to use one at the beginning of the game when you load it up.
