- Few of us realise the dreams we have as 8-year-olds, but actor, screenwriter and director Mark Gatiss, obsessed with horror, Doctor Who and Sherlock Holmes as a child, has managed to incorporate his early passions into his professional life. Now a grown-up with an astonishing catalogue of work, Gatiss no longer pursues the macabre with adolescent fervour, but a darkness continues to run through even the most camp and comedic additions to his oeuvre. From December 2023 he'll be starring in The Motive and the Cue at the Noel Coward Theatre whilst directing The Unfriend at Wyndham’s Theatre next door. Tickets available now.
He's a lovely man, grew up in the village and has done a lot in the local area for some organisations. I like that he turned up at the picket line in my town to support his brother and his brothers colleagues in the post office. Funny, interesting and a canny human being 😁💛✌️
I always love hearing little anecdotes like that about “famous” people, just living their lives and being decent people 😊
I don’t know and haven’t met Mark myself, but I’ve got a pre-existing and established feeling of warmth towards him through shared personal connections (quite apart from appreciation for any of his work). One of my dear friends has spent (and probably does still spend!) much time with Mark and his husband - my friend’s wife considers Mark her best friend, and to some extent (however tenuously! 😆) I think I’ve almost mentally “filed” him as being part of my “extended friendship circle” as a result ☺️
And it’s funny - watching this interview (and I’m only 1/4 of the way in because I got overexcited and paused to come into the comments), I’m struck by just how much Mark reminds me of my friend 🥰 Maybe because my friend automatically comes to mind due to my knowledge of them knowing each other… but they’re seemingly also both very warm and lovely men, both absolute geeks/nerds with potentially niche deep interests (including an appreciation for the dark and/or macabre), both thoughtful and considered, but also with a twinkle of humour ready to laugh at any moment 😊
(And I think I should probably take a screenshot of this to send to my friend as a “saw this and thought of you”!) 🧡
I adore Mark. Everything he is involved with is gold.
I love these interviews so much. You always seem to make it easy, James.
Fascinating interview-james now needs to interview Steve Pemberton
I remember that showing of The Devil Rides Out! 1983.
Pair of absolute Hats 🙃
Ee i love mark gatis he such anorth east sensation
Hugs
Mark u are perfect ❤
Blimey, why so few views??
Funny how we label stuff. His writing can be funny and enjoyable, but it gets called Dark.
For me, stuff like Love Island is dark and bleak. But that's pushed as mainstream and even aspirational!

"deez nutz" are your words not mine but they describe you perfectly!
Sorry but what have random Bible quotes got to to do with this interview 😅
I cant get over how much Mark resembles Prince Harry.....
The damage this guy and Steven Moffat have done to british TV is immeasurable. From Who, to Sherlock, to Dracula... yeesh its such trash and they keep getting shows to make!!!
@C3n0byte598 hmm, interesting. That your comment is indistinguishable from trolling is quite telling.
@C3n0byte598 ooh, no, you're totally right, I just googled YT's terms of service and yes, it does indeed say comment sections are for praise, compliments and hype only. And that any negativity or criticism must be pounced upon and drowned-out. My mistake ;)
@@satyasyasatyasya5746I interpreted your original comment as trolling. It really is hard to believe that someone could be surprised by the fact that another member of the public is praising Gatiss' work, especially when it is so OBVIOUSLY widely and critically acclaimed. It is your right to think his work is trash, but it is your delusion to think you are in the majority.
@@misssummersalt quote me where I said I'm in the majority, I dare you ;)
