  • Few fictional characters had the impact on pop culture that Pac-Man did in the 1980s. From the very first year of the decade on, that yellow ghost muncher could be found on everything from lunch boxes to our television sets. He even had his own hit song on the Billboard Top 10! The world had Pac-Man Fever.
    In this video we do our best to present you with a clear picture of just how influential Pac-Man’s popularity was to us during a decade that had more than its share of icons.

    Pac-Man was EVERYWHERE kids, not just the arcade. Department stores, restaurants, gas stations, even my dentist had a Pac-Man machine! It truly was the golden age of video games and I'm so happy I grew up in it

      Definitely! It was crazy just how prevalent that arcade cabinet was in society.

    Great video! As a child of the '80s, Pac-Man was a big part of my life at the time... I regularly played Pac-Man & Ms. Pac-Man in arcades and local pizza parlors, got both games for the Atari 2600 (plus handheld games), ate that sugary Pac-Man cereal, collected Pac-Man stickers, and even read paperback books of Pac-Man jokes and high-score tips. And I've still hung on to many of those things to this day!

    Pac Man Mac N Cheese was my favorite! I remember when my parents bought a pop up camper, we would spend most of our summers camping and traveling. I used to beg my mom to make Pac Man macaroni for dinner.

      What an awesome memory. Just goes to show that each person’s life was likely impacted by Pac-Man in a variety of ways… not just the game itself.

    In the early 80s Six Flags was owned by Bally for a short time and in their parks the children's section was Pac-Man themed.

    I was never around in the 80s, but I do remember playing Pac-Man and Miss Pac-Man in the 90s and 2000s. I also remember watching the Pac-Man Christmas special on Cartoon Network back in the 90s when I was younger. As for video games, I own several Namco compilation games that include Pac-Man games.

    I got a playable digital Pac-Man watch for my birthday in ‘82, by Nelsonic. The “mute” feature allowed for lots of gameplay while in class. 😊

    I caught Pacman fever at 2 years of age and never recovered. Born only a year before Pac, the two of us have grown up together. We've each had our good times and bad, had a wife and kids (he much earlier than I) and , coincidentally I swear, my wife bears a beauty mark on her face almost identical to Ms. Pacmans. That Tomy electronic game may have been my first video game experience, and the Atari classic was a true treat before we had much to compare it to.

      @@RetroDaze This past November I suffered a stroke, which severely limited my use of my left hand. My "d-pad" operating hand. Since then I've been playing round after round of Pacman, slowly regaining full use of those fingers. I now count Pacman among my therapists.

    Great video guys! Across here in Blighty "Mini Munchman" by Grandstand was the most popular Pac-Man style handheld and also included a realtime clock, alarm and stopwatch. Great memories of my first portable handheld gaming experience. Keep up the awesome work!

    i did have pac-man for the Atari 2600. one of my brother's friends came over & showed me that there was a glitch in the game where you can move pac-man up & down & he can pass thru the walls. but i forgot how to do now. i did have a pac-man board game & my mom bought a pac-man soap set where pac-man was a sponge & the ghost was the soap. i do remember the pac-man cereal as a kid.

    Was anyone else perfectly satisfied with Atari 2600 Pac-Man when it first came out, and only found out that it was (supposedly) looked down on when Internet message boards became a thing in the 1990s?

    • @JasonT-xp3kh
      @JasonT-xp3kh Před 3 měsíci +1

      No, actually it made me so mad that I didn't touch a 2600 game for 40 years.
      They hyped that game up like no other before it. It came out late and it SUCKED! I'm still pissed off about it, it was such a disappointment.

    • @RetroDaze
      @RetroDaze  Před 3 měsíci

      At the time we were fine with it but also were well aware that it was inferior to the arcade. The novelty of being able to play it at home made it’s weaknesses harder to be upset about.

    I have a legit, bought copy on tape of the Buckner & Garcia album. Some of the other not-pac-man songs are cute too.
    I definitely remember the music for the Pac-Man cereal advertising. I don't think we ever had any. Mom objected to too many marshmallows.
    We grew up poor , so the vile bastardization of Italian cuisine was a delicacy. Picked up some regular Chef Boyardee spaghetti-Os not too long ago and I still think they are good. (A fair indication I will survive the zombie apocalypse by eating out of cans.)

    even though the NES was the thing that cemented my love of videogames, I certainly cant deny all the pac-man stuff I was kinda into beforehand! I do remember the cartoon and probably played a fair amount of the 2600 (and later 7800) versions! nowadays I actually own the arcade 1up version of ms. pac-man and do fire it up from time to time. though it's been a hot minute I'm probably overdue, haha. also have to track down a copy of pac-man fever for our record collection! I think the one piece of pac-man merch I'd love to own is ken uston's 'mastering pac-man' strategy guide, I checked it out of a library once and it was actually kind of neat!

    1982 year for PAC-MAN was at its peak even though the horrible port for the console versions launched at the summer of 1982. It fizzled out by the second half of 1983 just a couple of months before the gaming crashed by late 1983 thanks to countless poor decisions from Atari and the oversaturation of home consoles filled with horrible games.

    • @RetroDaze
