  • Building a greenhouse doesn't have to be hard or expensive! This build costs less than $200 bucks and it gives you 96 SQ FT! And since it is modular you can make it larger, or smaller depending on your needs and location! 3 cattle panels, roughly 56 ft in boards, one roll of tape, one roll of 20x20 greenhouse plastic, two hinges, one latch, some screws and staples and you are done! This can easily be built in one afternoon. You CAN DO it!! #flannelfarms #Greenhouse #Seeds #diy #Farming #homestead #family

    I love it! We built a 10x40 greenhouse in 2023 and added tables with shelves. We have gotten so much use out of it. We've put a fridge and freezer in it, used it to store winter squash, and now we are starting seeds again. Y'all will really enjoy the greenhouse!

    If you use a cattle panel on each side connectedat the top with zip ties, you can make it taller, or wider. Is handy for keeping tomatoes inside, or running beds for growing inside.

    We did that except we used tin around the bottom. We put the panels up off the ground right under the top edge of the tin.
    I wanted tin because I didn't want our dogs to see when a chicken was inside ( I knew at least one would find a way) and tear up the plastic or dig in. We had one hen hatch around three or four clutches of eggs inside so the tin was a good call for us.
    We put thin pvc pipe over the top and attached them to the tin with those brace things that we could slide it out and back in. That way we could add shade cloth or pull back the plastic in our hot climate.
    We had a fire and the wood and plastic burned up but the cattle panels and tin are still in place. Those things really hold up!

    • @FlannelFarms
      @FlannelFarms  Před 4 měsíci

      Love that idea! I've some old tin laying around, I might build another one that way.

      @@FlannelFarms exactly what we used...old tin and stuff we had except for the pipe, bracket things and probably a few nails or screws. Those kinds of greenhouses are strong enough to hold plants hanging in baskets. For a while I had drip sprinklers around the top but that chicken wanting to hatch in it...I just started hand watering because I went out one day and she was all wet... and mad. You know the saying. Now combine that with a game hen who is super protective. 😂

    Two things- Air flow, you are going to need it. Second, wind straps, you are going to need them. That size, I would X strap across each panel. It will keep the winds from lifting the plastic off and shredding it. Ask me how I know this 😆

    • @FlannelFarms
      @FlannelFarms  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Haha! So we did add vents, just not in this video. We used the floor vents from the house that we replaced, so far they are working really well.
      I've some fiber weave tape that I will probably use as wind straps, but I did tape the plastic inside to the panels, I just didn't show that

    • @k.p.1139
      @k.p.1139 Před 4 měsíci +2

      @FlannelFarms the X straps is so the wind can flow and lift the plastic, but, it doesn't let the plastic tear. Crazy how it works.
      2 tropical storms and so far it's still holding in place.

  • @kimkearney5914
    @kimkearney5914 Před 4 měsíci +5

    Are you putting in some kind of a vent/window to let the heat out?
    I love the idea of the easy greenhouse, I could really use one of those. I also like that you can change the length & it does look very sturdy!

    • @FlannelFarms
      @FlannelFarms  Před 4 měsíci +6

      Yes! We had a few old floor registers that we used. I cut the opening out then taped the cut out, then put it in, then taped it to it.

    @monkeyfoodgarden Před 4 měsíci +1

    Y'all did a nice job on that especially repurposing. My wife and I built a greenhouse ourselves and it is the best investment we've made. Wonder how the take will hold up possibly using baton tape or wind strapping would be a better option for where you anchor to the rail road ties. Wishing y'all a blessed evening.

    • @FlannelFarms
      @FlannelFarms  Před 4 měsíci

      I might get something heavier, or use wood like a washer like we did inside. We are really pleased with it so far.
      Maybe some fabric/weave material as wind strapping.

    Very nice! Do you plan to put any kind of zigzagging cordage over the plastic like I’ve seen on full size greenhouses? Or would it wear holes in the plastic where it rubs on the cattle panel squares?
    I’ve given serious contemplation to building one of these myself but it won’t likely happen until next year when I’m retired and have more time to commit to my garden.
    Thanks for sharing. I continue to enjoy your content and receive much encouragement from watching.

      Thank you for the kind words! That is our overall goal, to encourage folks even if they don't want to live a homesteady type life!
      We've been thinking about adding cross straps, however it is located in our backyard and the wind isn't really an issue back there. We had steady winds of 30mph yesterday with gusts up to 50 and it hardly fluttered.
