K254 you gotta have passion to become a flight attendant because it’s really hard. not just for the money and meeting friends, you can do that in most jobs, and money isn’t as great as you think.
Hi Captain Joe! I'm currently taking the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand in high school to slowly crawl my way into becoming a pilot. Your videos keep me motivated throughout the process and I'd like to thank you for that!
Stefan Acimovic yes you can! Study hard in school. When you get to high school make sure you take all your classes and pass them all. So when you go to college you can get a scholarship and save tons of money!
watch out and don't exagerate with simulators if you want to become a pilot. depending on different airlines there are different procedures which might be difficult to do because of that many hours by doing it by ur own on simulators.
Here is basic information about the Class 1 medical certificate: www.atpl.at/class_1_medical_certificate.php The costs of the training can vary depending on the country. You can find information regarding the training in different countries. You can make a search "ATPL training". Here is one example: www.grupooneair.com/commercial-pilot-course-spain/
It honestly varies on the costs. I recommend using King Schools for GROUND school. I use them. They offer multiple plans, The most expensive is currently $500-600 but the cheapest is like $200-300. For the medical it varies. Eyesight issues are ok as long as they're correctable with glasses/contacts. Can't have insulin dependent diabetes. They take a lot of other tests too for heart, blood pressure, lung capacity, mental health. They generally don't allow bipolar disorder and a few other things but it varies from person to person there really isn't a specific number for everything.
@Brendan Mayorga - You need 1500 flight hours to get an Airline Transport Pilot Licence. You can first get a CPL (commercial pilot licence) and you don't need as much flight hours for the CPL. You need about 250 flight hours to get the CPL. With the CPL it is easier to build more flight hours for the ATPL. If you also get a CFI rating you can work as a flight instructor and build those flight hours more quickly. In Europe (EASA rules) it's also possible to have first a so called frozen ATPL with lesser flight hours than those 1500 hours, and you can apply for a job as a first officer.
Advice for all the teenagers and kids wanting help in learning to fly. I don't know where you are located but in the USA there are programs like en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_Eagles There is also the Civil Air Patrol which has youth section www.gocivilairpatrol.com/cap_home/youth/ If you are located near a coast and/or near wilderness areas they will be more active and need volunteers. From people in distress and those that need locating. An air survey to give a SIT REP to rescuers to better prepare and gear up or down to the needs and/or to drop an emergency supply pack/flotation. remember that plane circling overhead is comfort and will keep them from panicking and getting in worse trouble hopefully. If in the USA as part of school, your parents had a program offered around the 9th or 10th grade (age14 -15 for starting) which was called "Explorer Scouting", which was a program that you attend monthly meetings for the whole year. With professionals in the field of many jobs and with other like minded teenagers. Some new , some with several years experience. The purpose is to explore the job field you show interest in for careers choices. To make sure the job field is what you want before you commit a lot of time(University/Trade School) and money to only find out ""Wait I didn't want be a barber I wanted to be a ""Lumberjack"" ( see the comedy Monty Python - Lumberjack Song on youtube) The Explorer groups helped you get starting off head start advantage of experience(can't get any if no one will work you , see how many pilots are flying in third world countries until they can move to the bigger planes and airlines) and make the very important contacts to help open doors for you. Adults in the field, in your case Pilots, Aviation crews, ATC ETC, Volunteer their time to help mentor the upcoming generation. The program changed names but the aviation section is at www.exploring.org/aviation/ for 14-20 year olds. If you are not in the USA, I would expect your country has something very similar. Ask your school's Guidance Counselors for information. That is part of their job and you can use that resource, even if you aren't in trouble at school and sent to speak with them. Don't expect the Counselors to be experts for the field but a resource for materials and who to contact for gathering information source. Then you'll have to follow those leads. Do you have a Flight/ Aviation Museum in your home town/city? They would be an equal resource and you'll be amazed for how the people will try to give you a hand up if your willing to do the work. Especially if you ask intelligent questions about what are these parts , where are the controls for____ on this aircraft on display? Don't be the usual kid that asks which button drops the bomb and/or fires the guns.... Plus they will have a Aviation Library that has numerous materials that you won't find at your school and/or public libraries. Like Approach plate present and historical. Let me tell you about when runway 18R became 18 C and there was no 18 R yet..... Volunteering will teach you a lot, because when working beside the people you'll hear information, stories, and have the ability to learn more from random bits of extra knowledge outside of the typical classroom and educational speeches. Sweeping isn't fun but you will be nearer to the aircrafts and when you wipe them down, that will give you experience with touching the aircrafts. Hands on will help and while every plane is different never think you're above flying_____ because that ego works counter to getting where you want to be. Everyone starts small and works their way up. The people who jump first on the proverbial grenade tend to work their way up faster for that commitment. The internet has made it easier for you but that sheer amount of people with websites trying to make money is overwhelming to sort through, especially when you are learning the job field. So sorry for the long post trying to help you with free and low cost options. You'll be amazed at the adults who will understand your desire and frustration about finding the right path to have a higher likelihood of getting to be a pilot. Most will have years of experience and while you will not be given a plane to fly, you will benefit from their mistakes without paying the costs of them. No alienation of and long paths due to bad performance reviews from avoidable mistakes. If you had only known.... Plus they have the hindsight to see what they could have done differently. More help to you, than the so often repeated old advice about "...stay in school...", "...get good grades...". Which as you already figure out is only part of the combination to earning your wings. The Military in the late 1990's(iirc) admitted to their surprise and happiness that recruits who played flight simulators were way ahead of the general recruits for aircraft knowledge and skills. That the gaming helped them transition to real life application. Go back and look at what Flight sims were like back then compare to what you have now. There was no youtube and no large collection of videos by people like Captain Joe to help you along. The bad part is all these flight gopro camera videos of "views from___" it makes the agony of not being to fly and near aircraft that much worse for you at this age. Look on Google groups for newsgroup rec.aviation any picture or video would be under alt.binaries.X.X X= some name pattern with aviation as the anchor. That was what the last generation had and we benefited greatly than the the people a decade or two before us. So the odds are in your favor if you have a thirst to learn. Best of luck with life and in your career. To finish off, I hope you're still reading :) old quotes of sage advice....(you'll find lists of these on flight forums) The three most useless things to a pilot are the altitude above you, runway behind you and a tenth of a second ago. Never let an aircraft take you somewhere your brain didn't get to five minutes earlier. Add the next 3 together Learn from the mistakes of others. You won't live long enough to make all of them yourself. (covers life and many high risk activities) To build off above, You start with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck. *combine those two and you have a big part being a successful Pilot. Which means Pilots have Good judgement, that comes from experience. How do get that experience? Unfortunately , the experience usually comes from bad judgement. On lighter and funnier note, In the ongoing battle between objects made of aluminum going hundreds of miles per hour and the ground going zero miles an hour, the ground has yet to lose. & Stay out of clouds. The silver lining everyone keeps talking about might be another airplane going in the opposite direction. Reliable sources also report that mountains have been known to hide out in clouds. Most of all, Every takeoff is optional, every landing is mandatory. It's always better to be down here wishing you were up there than up there wishing you were down here. For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return. --Leonardo da Vinci--
Anthony Vo See my long, ok very long reply to STHYR right below your comment, about training options available. Written focused on the USA but applicable to other countries. Resources you might not have thought of yet. Your upload make think your from around Perth Australia so the programs names from the USA will have to be found for your country's official names but the basics of each group and outfit should exist. Example being the military air force patrols the skies but so does rescue boaters branch that is called Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol (established in 1937 as the Volunteer Coastal Patrol) and the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard . You wouldn't think of them for becoming a pilot at first, but what goes faster for searching an area, aircraft or boats? Which can be on scene faster? They will use helicopters but search planes help cover more ground/water. The Volunteering is a good way in way of trading your surplus time for service & education and building a resume. Professional pilots often volunteer to give back to the world which has been good to them. You'll never know how great and important someone is....Usually the biggest people say the least about their jobs and skill set. That connection could pay off with a door opening. Don't go with a "I'm just here to get to there..." attitude, it is ok to have the goal elsewhere but shine at what you do and people will notice. Hoping you get your wings sooner rather than later. Being in the air is the best. You might be able to fly gliders before powered aircraft. Transitioning over will be easier. Plus if you can start logging air hours earlier in life, all the better. :) Which will give you training and a foot in the door at the local airport. Big airports will be harder to get into than smaller private fields and clubs. Museum and historical planes clubs are another equal place to learn but expect to put a lot of work but the rewards are worth it. Most have discount memberships for people your age. But if lucky you can become the local assistant/Gofer all the while soaking the wealth of experience and knowledge of those around you. Always have you eyes and ears open and ask when it won't cause a disruption based on need of course of urgency.
So if you've watched some more Captain Joe videos, you might have seen the collab with DutchPilotGirl, she just started her career and has some great videos about Flight Training etc.
I just had a change of heart a couple days ago for my future job and wanted to become a pilot and this video is the last nail on the coffin because now i can’t wait to finish school and becoming a pilot. dream job here i come!
Super good video Joe, im 17 atm and my dream is to become an airline pilot. You´re a big inspiration, keep up the good work and hope to meet you in the cockpit soon :)
The best advice I was ever given when I was talking about becoming a pilot was: "Go fly gliders while you finish your engineering's master degree." I regret not taken that road. I ended up becoming a helicopter pilot, aeronautical engineer and I am considering doing a bridge to the other side. But for those thinking about becoming a pilot, please take into account gliders as early as possible. This will give you the fundamentals of flying and help you to understand and feel the atmosphere.
If you study very very very good, you may have a change to get in a sponsorprogram (so you don't need to pay) from a flightschool. British Airways for example provides this sort of program, but you have to be lucky to get in :(
I agree, it definitely is on of the major reasons a lot of people are afraid of. I´m still trying to figure out a way on how to "surround" the money problem :(
Smita Dmello please tell me site of British sponsor program ..... and also tell me is there is any country restrictions....like only British citizen is provided sponsor
I have to say, your video is very inspiring. I’m applying to a cadetship and I’m ditching my moderately high paying carrier to pursue being a commercial pilot at 27. I’m fortunate enough I can pay for all the flight time and education required without a loan. Your video just reaffirmed my decision. I’m not doing this for the money because I know I make more than any senior pilot but the lifestyle is amazing and your video just reaffirms it.
Free time compared to money is definitely a huge plus. Nowadays it’s not just the money, but wether or not you actually have the time to spend it and enjoy it!
'money', major reason i set fire to a model 777 in Boeing livery that i had bought as a kid & looked at as my inspiration. With it burned my dreams of becoming a pilot.
Geiles Video ! aber mal ein Vorschlag um mal ehrlich zu sein könntest du ja auch mal ein Video machen indem du erzählst was die Schattenseiten sind vom Job ! wäre Fair
I can't wait to become a pilot. Every single time I get news that I'm going to an airplane / airport I'm always counting every hour, every day waiting for the day to happen. Nobody will change my mind about my passion.
I have loved flying since the first time I ever went on a plane. I am absolutely passionate about this world and this video just solved all my doubts. Thank you so much Captain Joe!!
Good advice, Joe! Regardless of the industry, one has to start at the bottom-- it takes patience, tenacity, lots of work and a little luck, but it was worth it for me. I was fortunate to get paid well for what I did; I would do it again in a New York minute. God bless you and keep you safe.
Comparing doctors salaries to pilots is way off, the average doctor salary in the US is 180k, the average pilot salary 79k, the average airline pilot is 110K. The average surgeon salary is 273k. I am a dentist, work 200 days a year, and I make 350K. And I don't spend 100 days a year suffering from jet lag :)
my only point is everybody's profession is different in many ways. no body should compare each other with money. We all are helping each other in many different ways. I hate when ppl compare each other profession especially with money. I hope you understand my point. No offence. Thanks@@8Lightningbolt8
I swear that whatever Joe said about pilots being very attractive. Ever since my uncle became a pilot, whenever ppl would ask him about his job, they would instantly become SOOO interesting in him. Ppl love him much much more and girls keep flirting with him... I swear, being a pilot had a ton of benefits!
Vladimirski i have a school where aerospace is everything and i get into courses every month not bad. and my country is an aerospace hub. so i get lots of jobs opportunities. and my country has the best airforce in the region. and we are tropical country so no snow!!! and after i graduate from my secondary school which is high school i think. i will go to another school for more planes yea. i can start to fly at 17 and get my own pilot license at 17 where we will fly to another country have lunch there and back. that is just awesome and i only need to pay 40 dollars. usd around 30. but i have to go to university but my country has consription so it will be tough. but hopefully if all goes well i become a f-16 pilot or f-15 and maybe even f-35 in my turn. it will just be amazing. around 30 plus i will join the commercial side and fufil my dream.
Okay I’m 12, I have ALWAYS wanted to become a pilot since I was 4, my first time in a plane I LOVED IT! Our family is always traveling , (mainly cruises tho) I have been in about 14 plane rides, I love always I always ask to sit next to the window. I love heights, I’m picking my GCSE this February , (also flying to America in 19 days) 😚I don’t know what I need A levels in to become a pilot , what are the main subjects I have NO CLUE 😶
try going into GeoFs, its free! i recomend that you play the game for years and then become a pilot, it will teach you most, i have been playing for about two months now, i can easily keep the aircraft stable, im pratacing being escorted right now, then on to BEING the escort!
Captain Joe, It's very ironic you compared your job with a doctor. Which I'm as well. I wanted to be pilot but I choose to be a doctor because of scientific research. I love it! And although Pilots and doctors might get paid the same but research pays of pretty well. You literally get paid for thinking. Very very well. Also being a doctor, you get to go home everyday to be with your family. However one day I do want to learn flying. My dream is to be able to afford my own Jet and fly around in it. Something like a Bombardier LearJet Global or something. Learning a lot from your videos! Keep it up. You're the best.
Dr. Saqib can you share with us how much your salary is ? the ballpark of it would be great. i'm a Programmer thinking to start over and go to medical school because of low salary in my country.
Yeah, maybe after 20 years. Truthfully most pilots don’t make terribly much for at least the first 10 years. Also, don’t forget about the $75000+ in loans.
I want to know why you to see my daughter get married this past Sunday I hadn't flown over 37 years and I loved it I absolutely loved it I have a new found respect for you guys your everything to me
Wow that's very sad. Is it possible to get your licenses in flight clubs there? Maybe you can save a lot of money doing that. For the first time I'm very happy of living in Uruguay, getting all your licenses up to CPL (including IFR) cost you around 35k - 40k here, generally flying in the US and south america is a lot cheaper than europe.
Yeah your right, nearly all of the students here do their ground training here and then go to arazona or newzeland for the flight training on twin props and then they return to start there type rattings in the simulators, however the flight school that offers this had a 98% employment rate. Don't know what it's like in your country
Oh I see. Well here once you get your licenses you are on your own. 98% employment rate sounds good but for that money... I don't know if its worth it.
my school has taken up an aviation program, we fly the sims, get actual flight experience and are currently building our own plane! Its got me really interested and definitely think its a future career choice for me
Sven Reuser I don't know in which country you live, but your technology grades in 7/8th grades DON'T affected your career!! 😁😁What you learn at flight schools is very different ,more interesting and you'll be caught about the whole middle school and high school technology's curriculum in few months. So this really doesn't affect your future!! I myself am in prep school and will soon enroll in a flight school after 2 years (I chose the long studies, but it's not compulsory). So if you want to become a pilot, DO IT !!🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 (except if you change your mind of course)
Lyoutou *_* thank you for this boost! i think your right about the fact that ill enjoy airplane technology. I love planes and in my country (the netherlands) we dont have middle school 😉, we go directly to high school and i do have a class in technology, but it doesn’t count as an actual subject, because you cant get grades. im defenitly gonna try really hard to become a pilot! 😊
@@toastpulver3422 but that's not necessarily a bad thing, the less often you see each other the more you can look forward to it and also work on your own things 😊
Captain please do make a video on financing the training.. because I'm stuck onlyyy because of money.. I'll be a mechanical engineer in a year.. Soo I really have no worries about maths and physics.. I love the technicality of machines I have also done my class one medical tests.. even though I have glasses I am more then eligible to fly. the only obstacle is financing it.. I am not from a very wealthy family.. so it's a hugeee challenge for me.. I applied for cadet pilot programs in Europe but I onlyyy failed because I live in Asia.. if you can tell us about some kind of bank with low interest rates that you know of.. or anyways that people like me can get into cadet pilot programs without any restrictions for where I live.. it'll be the best.. any kind of info will help. and btw thanks for the video.. I really really enjoy your videos.. plus you fly the family of plane that I really wanna fly in future.. Airbus.. and specially the new Airbus which was launched few hrs ago, an A380Plus... also A321NeoLR.. amazing planes.. can't wait for your next video... ☺
I’m 14 and I already know I want to be a pilot , the only problem is I developed a fear of flying airplanes and I don’t know why , it used to be my favourite thing in the world and now I get scared going onto planes and it’s making me anxious that I might not be able to do my dream job !
You know what, nevermind. Ryanair is actually pretty good. You get decent salary, and many days off. You also get to fly to the most popular tourist destinations all over Europe.
Join the military get the gi bill and then go to school. It will take an extra 3 years but you will be debt free and get paid to go to school literally
I have CPL but I don't have a job, because I don't have enough english skills, because in Russia airlines require to know FCOM and FCTM of boing or airbus aitcrafts :( I try to improve it
you can fly more cheaper but, you will be an stand-by personnel, which means if the flight is full you can not come, or you might get upgraded to First Class, but if your a Captain / First Officer or the manager of the Airport, 99% you will of flying. If you resign its 55%

The costs of the training can vary depending on the country. You can find information regarding the training in different countries. You can make a search "ATPL training".
Here is one example:
www.grupooneair.com/commercial-pilot-course-spain/
It honestly varies on the costs. I recommend using King Schools for GROUND school. I use them. They offer multiple plans, The most expensive is currently $500-600 but the cheapest is like $200-300. For the medical it varies. Eyesight issues are ok as long as they're correctable with glasses/contacts. Can't have insulin dependent diabetes. They take a lot of other tests too for heart, blood pressure, lung capacity, mental health. They generally don't allow bipolar disorder and a few other things but it varies from person to person there really isn't a specific number for everything.
I'm a girl too (kinda worried since there aren't many other female pilots)
Memez Unlimited - At least it seems that today all airlines have female pilots in their flight crews.
Im a 11 y/o flightsim guy that dream to be a pilot, and i just wann say that your vids are great 😀
STHYR just as a little tip.. start flying gliders as soon as you can! it's more fun than flight sim and helps you much more learning how to fly ;)
Agreed!
Everything you just typed is Exactly what i want to say. I'm 11 and i fly a flight sim... And i want to be a pilot...Or I AM going to be a pilot.
Advice for all the teenagers and kids wanting help in learning to fly.
I don't know where you are located but in the USA there are programs like en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_Eagles
There is also the Civil Air Patrol which has youth section www.gocivilairpatrol.com/cap_home/youth/
If you are located near a coast and/or near wilderness areas they will be more active and need volunteers.
To make sure the job field is what you want before you commit a lot of time(University/Trade School) and money to only find out ""Wait I didn't want be a barber I wanted to be a ""Lumberjack"" ( see the comedy Monty Python - Lumberjack Song on youtube)
The Explorer groups helped you get starting off head start advantage of experience(can't get any if no one will work you , see how many pilots are flying in third world countries until they can move to the bigger planes and airlines) and make the very important contacts to help open doors for you.
To finish off, I hope you're still reading :)
old quotes of sage advice....(you'll find lists of these on flight forums)
The three most useless things to a pilot are the altitude above you, runway behind you and a tenth of a second ago.
Never let an aircraft take you somewhere your brain didn't get to five minutes earlier.
Add the next 3 together
Learn from the mistakes of others. You won't live long enough to make all of them yourself. (covers life and many high risk activities)
To build off above,
You start with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck. *combine those two and you have a big part being a successful Pilot.
Which means Pilots have Good judgement, that comes from experience. How do get that experience? Unfortunately , the experience usually comes from bad judgement.
On lighter and funnier note,
In the ongoing battle between objects made of aluminum going hundreds of miles per hour and the ground going zero miles an hour, the ground has yet to lose.
&
Stay out of clouds. The silver lining everyone keeps talking about might be another airplane going in the opposite direction. Reliable sources also report that mountains have been known to hide out in clouds.
Most of all,
Every takeoff is optional, every landing is mandatory.
Which will give you training and a foot in the door at the local airport.
I am 14 years old and i also want to become a pilot .

That is good and i wan too
I believe that you'll one day prove them wrong.
How do you know if a guy flys for Cathay Pacific?
Don’t worry, his wife will tell you.
money is a main problem joe !!
If you study very very very good, you may have a change to get in a sponsorprogram (so you don't need to pay) from a flightschool. British Airways for example provides this sort of program, but you have to be lucky to get in :(
I agree, it definitely is on of the major reasons a lot of people are afraid of. I´m still trying to figure out a way on how to "surround" the money problem :(
Smita Dmello please tell me site of British sponsor program ..... and also tell me is there is any country restrictions....like only British citizen is provided sponsor
yaah letz hope my luck is good !!
its the same problem with me !!
Captain Joe you always give me a reason to become a pilot one day
I have to say, your video is very inspiring.

For me is to late to be a pilot but I have two kids they cant be.
And I don't spend 100 days a year suffering from jet lag :)

how did you afford your pilot training?
Vladimirski if you do it through certain pilot schools such as FTEJerez there is dedicated loans from the bbva for it
Vladimirski I get my money by washing planes at my local airport 😃👍
I´d like to meet that dad of mine you know so well apparently? thanks!

I always wanted to be a pilot, but I have glasses!! So poor vision :-(

I love heights, I’m picking my GCSE this February , (also flying to America in 19 days) 😚I don’t know what I need A levels in to become a pilot , what are the main subjects I have NO CLUE 😶
hey im twelve too! :)
try going into GeoFs, its free! i recomend that you play the game for years and then become a pilot, it will teach you most, i have been playing for about two months now, i can easily keep the aircraft stable, im pratacing being escorted right now, then on to BEING the escort!

Thanks for the advice Joe, Just one thing, got a spare 140 grand? XD
what? Do you need 140k to become a pilot?
apparently. from what Ive been told by the leed flight school in the UK, between about 100,000 to 140,000
Wow that's very sad.

So this really doesn't affect your future!! I myself am in prep school and will soon enroll in a flight school after 2 years (I chose the long studies, but it's not compulsory).
