- In today's video we are looking at the Citroen C6. A standout car from Citroen's modern era, which seems to be a throwback to their famed icons like the old DS.
With examples available on the used market now for around £5,000 is this on of the best weird daily drivers you can buy?

The world is a poorer place without hydraulic Citroens.
I can tell you from first hand that Citroën is back on track with their advanced comfort program. The Progressive Hydraulic Cushion suspension system they use give the best of both worlds. A superb comfort ride with quite a bit dynamic. As a owner of a XM and Xantia V6 activa I can tell u that the ride in my C5 Aircross is perfect as it can be. Even the seats are better than they ever where before. Citroën is back on track quirky and polarizing as they where. The C6 was and is a queen of the road but almost nobody bought it.
With the car world full of thin low profile tires , couldn't agree more ...Peugeot and Citroen should bring it back in a shared platform halo car .
I had a C5 from 2001 with the same suspension. Miss it badly
Look at global sales. The World spoke , French cars suck.
@@richardellison9833 The funny thing is that fiats still exist and they were worse :/
Sorry, but the design of the C6 is one of the greatest designs of the modern era, stunning.
no
And Lancia Thesis .
AHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHHAH
It’s hideous!
Nah it looks like a Nissan Altima 🤣
Personally i love the styling, its weird, nothing matches but it looks mad
Are you talking about his shirt?
@@mrvujadinovic9403 lol
@@mrvujadinovic9403 You've heard of a Shock Jock..this is a Shock Top.
I agree! His remarks on this car’s looks are a prime example of an Incorrect Opinion™. Just look at it! 🙃
Same, I love its design too!!!.......
My old headteacher Mr Fletcher had one of these in gun metal gray (2006-2009) until he was deposed by Mr Knowles and his 3series. Mr Knowles was all show, Mr Fletcher was the real deal.
I swear petrol heads have some kind of telepathy. Every time I look at cars to buy you upload a review! love it!
It's called ASP, Automotive Sensory Perception.
I got ASP too although having owned an Xantia in 2002 I now know better..
@@gilesward7700 i was looking at this car yesterday in person and online.... its too crazy man
Yesterday I was talking about this car and yes today a video shows up 😎
Petrolheads don’t buy shitroens, fact 🤣
Customer: "Hello Autoglass, yes I would like a replacement rear window for a Citroën C6 please."
Customer: "Hello?"
10/10
Try that with a classic car with a split windscreen. Not only will they hang up immediately, they'll probably block your number.
It's actually a Saab front windscreen used in reverse ..and yes we have one or two.
@@planestrainsdogsncars4336
That's ingenious!
@@planestrainsdogsncars4336 Very interesting.
Old Citroens never die, they just float off into the spheres. I sat in one of these at the Geneva Show in 2005 and it felt more like a spaceship than a car.
These look quite impressive in the flesh, especially in black.
I was just about to make the same comment
Uhh black..apart from all the washing , The clear coat always seems to get tiny scratches in it and shows up under the sunlight . White and the lighter colours avoid this.
Lol l know got a black 3.0 diesel 🤣😎
@@planestrainsdogsncars4336 yes but from a side view the tail lights look wrong on the white ones, they just blend in so well and look so much more sleek with a black body
with cream interior, it's a killer combination 👌
I bought one last year as a cheap daily, and it's proving lovely.
How reliable is it?
@@SacreDro Been pretty good overall. Bought it with some faults and haven't got round to putting them all right, but the only fresh issue is a noisy drive belt idler bearing (hopefully not a cambelt tensioner!)
Cheap daily? Isn’t the roadtax like £600 a year?
My Dad's last car was a 59 reg 3.0 diesel with virtually every option, all of which featured an engaging gallic quirk. The rear parking sensors were scared of exhaust smoke, the automatic wipers came on with no provocation, but never when it rained, etc. etc. I thoroughly enjoyed that car and it was a sad day when it went.
Just saw one in the streets, the design aged so well its incredible how it subtlely stands out among big muscular agressive cars of today, it really is an echo of Citroën's magic of old... Its classy in a cool slightly alien way, absolutely blows out every high end German design in my opinion, it just got that unique fascinating factor when you look at it in the flesh.
Easy you, that car is personification of a mutated car.
As a life-long Citroën fan, I pressed Like before I even watched this.
Me too. :) Though I do like and drive the occasional German car as well :)
So do I Pal 👍
🤦🏻♂️
I love these... and im lucky enough to have one in black. It is so french it actually makes me better looking....but only when im in it tho🙄. Fabulous car.... 😁
👏🏻👏🏻 The C6 is a great car. The tech packed into it is astounding. Adaptive suspension and active aero! It’s not a sports car... more a comfortable limousine.
If I’m not mistaken, the C6 used to be the personal limousine of the French president
Nice change to the drab German manufacturers
@@pb6198 Agree - At least Citroens have a bit of personality and soul, or at least they used to.

These cars aged so well they look more modern now than when they came out.
ahead of time
I was attending the Mid-Atlantic Automobile Show when the announcement went out over the PA system: "the Citroen SM is the Motor Trend Car of the Year for 1972". Yep, there was a stampede for the Citroen exhibit stage and everyone received a hand-out brochure to mark the occasion. Thank you for helping me remember a time when Citroen, Peugeot and Renault were as common in the USA as Toyota and Datsun - remember Datsun? 😊
Yes, same thing as Nissan of course.
Learned to drive in a turquoise, Datsun 120Y. Great clutch i seem to remember , oddly. It was over 40 years back.
Right. Time to find proper CX and XM examples for you to test.
Maybe even bx gti
@@gabrielpokrajac5941 a Phase 2 16V BX. :)
CX GTi,yes please.
I would offer my mk1 V6 but unfortunately it’s slightly modified and on the Isle of Wight, there are a few good stock ones about, would be good to see a mk1 V6 XM reviewed
And a Xantia Activa
I've always admired the willingness of Citroen to make something different. I can't help feeling they've lost thier identity under PSA group, and that's a shame. Sure they were never the prettiest cars, nor the cheapest to repair, but the big saloons were ALWAYS comfy to ride in. I'd never own one myself (except possibly the XM just for its quirkiness) but i'm always glad to see one coming the other way.
Spoiler : stage 1 opens at 40mph, shuts again when you drop below 15mph, stage 2 opens at 80mph, drops back at 60mph
Also worth noting : the windows are double-glazed/double-laminate to reduce noise
Head-up display can have it's position adjusted to suit your line of vision and this is tied to the seat position settings.
The 'lounge pack' gives electric reclining AND heated rear seats
I've got a 2.7 Exclusive with lounge pack and lane departure (my second C6) and am always pleased to see someone else enjoying one.
I loved mine . I did 140k miles and all of them made me smile . It needed constant care but was reliable . Sadly there are quite a few suspension components from the Peugeot 407 that are not up to the weight of the car and needed replacement to often .
Love this car. My Dad had one and it's still one of his favourites. It was his commuter and I remember the week he put 2000 miles on it. Might end up with one in the garage again some day
I drive Citroen vans for work and they have been more reliable than German cars I’ve owned
2nd that, my c2 vts is far far more reliable than my bmw 520d
@@Bombastic_Spastic my saxo vtr has been pretty reliable too!

@@Blackmamba12345 have you ever driven every French car around then?
Another amazing top quality review
Oh yes! That one! Always loved, never expected a review
So refreshing to see in comparison to the frequent german plastic we see around
I would have preferred a drive after the car has been fixed tbh, but: Kudos on taking yet another Citroen on. Cool and quirky cars. Of the big Citroens my heart beats for the XM, simply because i remember being driven around in a 3,0 V6 auto, back in the day. What a lovely car that was. ..and for the looks. i do love me a XM.
Oh this is lovely cheers JayEmm, very very intersting.
They look fantastic & the ride quality is like driving on a cloud. The car guys were talking about getting one & I don’t blame them .
You make videos about all the cars I love, its like magic.
Since the upload.... only 2 available on autotrader. Let the bidding begin.
had one of these for two years, alongside my DS19. Loved it, and was sad to see it go but needed a 4x4.
Brilliant video jay somone brave to do a review of my favorite car I love the shape and style of them
Really love the improved camera work showing all the details.
Always been a fan of the C6, thanks
I had a Xantia and absolutely adored it. Really do have a C6 temptation
Another fantastic quirky affordable car. This channel just keeps delivering 👍
Thanks for the video. Really liked it. Please make a video of the unsung hero, Peugeot 607 3.0 V6. Great car for the money!
Superb review. Thank you.
LOVE this car! Wish that Citroën would re-enter the American market as I sure would want one as I'm dying to ride in one.I definitely want a diesel engine too!
Happy you tested this, I bought a BX 16v donor for my 205 GTI, and actually even without driving it, its quirkyness affected me. I could easily see myself dailying a C6 with great pleasure. Saxo VTS next?
Try to have another go in it after the spheres have been replaced, if they're on their way out it'll make a world of difference
Had a few C5's with the Hydro suspension, and they really are a car to waft along in. Absorbs the bumps like nothing else. Hence why rolls Royce used a similar set up. Qwerky but nice to be different. Great review 👍
I'm not sure if it's true but I heard Rolls Royce produced their suspension under licence from Citroen.
DS , CX ,XM , C 6 alles legändere Citroën
As always with any car I've owned and you've reviewed you are spot on about it all, nice one!. Not sure you've mentioned that the engine is the same one as most jlr cars from that era used, although jlr used it as a single turbo where the c6 has a twin turbo setup. I've owned 2 of these and would definitely have another one, it is a nice happy medium between the lexus that you reviewed a few days ago and a jag or beemer.
Love this car, so quirky looking and cool. There's a an old C5 saloon which kind of looks similar and one or 2 are still kicking about that I've seen.
Interesting & informative video, thank you.
Never been a fan of these, although I did love the CX.
JayM. Love the C6 models even today ! If this was a French maiden, what would be seated in the luxurious front pew ? V.
"WAFT-A-RIFIC" - Fantastic - I love that !! ... Thanks James for making my day, and another great shirt by the way. ... Keep up the good work.
This is my sicret car lust! Every now and then I will be looking C6 on autotrader! I love the looks and the uniqueness of this car. But then I ride a Moto Guzzi motorcycle so I think picking my rides by their uniqueness is in my nature!
This really isnt my type of car.. but I still just want one! Love your reviews mate keep it up.
Kind of considered these a couple of years ago. Seems like values have increased quite a bit since then after looking at these again now
I have to give you props for highlighting quirky cars instead of supercars and SUVs
So cool. Even rare over here in France and Spain. If you know a good mechanic these are fabulous.
Great Review !!!
Still love my 3.0 hdi. 😎
The one on test was a 2.7hdi with later style wheels. Mirrors were enlarged on last ones.
Worst feature satnav doesn't accept postcodes.
Always had a soft spot for a C6, there's one near me that's not moved on a driveway for 2 years+, so sad.
Give the owner a question if he’d be willing to sell it, if you have the possibility to buy it of course
Plop a note yhrough the door...
@@onelyone6976 I wouldn't buy a c6 that hasn't been moved for 2 years... regularly driven c6 could be a money pit, let alone the neglected one.
Absolutely love these. Love them!
A great honest review
Damn, I've been waiting for you to review this for such a long time! I think the C6 is wonderful, gorgeous styling (apart from the wing mirrors which I swear are from a Peugeot 206), magic carpet ride, and you actually see quite a few of them up in Scotland, there's about 4 of them milling around where I live.
The door mirrors are from the first generation C5
A future classic imo....sleek & full of design details...respect...😎😎
I was thinking of getting old gs but this lil gem could be what I’m looking for will have to consult the hub nut thanks Jay
I love that you do these quirky cars. I'd love to see you do a review on the Renault 21 Turbo, a Citroen ZX 2.0 16v, and the citroen BX GTi 16v. If you can find them. Had all 3 and loved them. Especially the R21 turbo.
Clearly a real Citroen. Fabulous design. As a child, in the 60s I sometimes sat on the back bench of my uncle's DS. Spaceship experience for a kid!
I do really really like these. Very keen on picking one up if I can get a driveway big enough. My only worry is that living in Plymouth the streets can be bloody tight. But it will be perfect for cruising out of here on long journeys to see the rellies
' . . .feel the lineage . . . ' - nicely put.
Love your reviews almost as much as I love old Citroens. I genuinely laughed at the golf ball line 😂
I’ve gone fully electric these days with both family cars and I often ponder which cars I would wrap up and hide from the eco-crusher. Many of them are Citroens. Any DS variant is a no brainier. But there are other less ‘classic’ ones. The BX 1.9 GTI is in there but I also have a soft spot for the much maligned XM. I listed after them and ignored beemers while I did.
Great vid.
Wow, American here, seeing the differences between American and even Japanese cars of the same period to these is pretty cool. I got a 99 Ram 1500 with a 5spd and a 5.9l v8, hearing the different relative engine sizes is super interesting as well
Another great one! Quick ask, what lav mic setup are you using? Thank you!

@@JayEmmOnCars thank you! I appreciate it!
Wife had a 57 plate 2.7 V6 Lignage. SUPERB and a very special car when it was running well. Ours very rarely did though. It was in the dealer approx. every 3 months in the 2 1/2 years we had it. Final straw was when the suspension went rock hard in Poland of all places. It was a long firm ride back to the UK. Oh ar misses. We sold it showing 46K its still going though with 108K according to the MOT checker website. We miss it but it was just too much hassle as an every day car.
Thanks for making an effort to look your best for the camera.
Having had an XM I was all over this car on its release but sadly unobtainable. I remember on many occasions being around the French ambassadors car FR1 (I won't tell you where or why) he had the 3.0V6 petrol black with cream interior, which is the only colour combination to have and it works, curious looks or not. Fabulous!
Green with cream would look good too
The first time i saw one was very very early one morning as i drove past Euston station a black shiny one coming in the opposite direction....Must have made an impact as i remember it 15 years on
As a 5 Series driver, I can say this is uber-cool, I love it as much as an old Saab 900, but likely less resale even in Australia😁👍
I on the other hand really really really really love the exterior, styling wise when this thing came out in 2005 it suddenly made 5-Series, E-Class look like a 20 years old design, it was that futuristic, and probably still is.
Really not a fan of French cars, but big Citroëns really float my boat...
Love these!
I remember hearing that the spoiler only raises up to its full height at 130 km/h or 80 mph here in Britain. So, you'd have to be going over the speed limit to get it there.
I really wish we had these here in Canada. Such a cool quirky car.
I love the lights the most , very Art Deco .
That's lovely and quirky. My village has a tiny car dealership and had one for sale for months last year
Tell us more please! :)
@@dewiprys9746sadly it's no longer there so must have sold
It looks great with a cream and wood interior
Got one couple years ago even with the drawbacks (quality) but I do like it, a black 2.7 exclusive with lounge pack ( the rear seats recline) and deep tan leather. Malcolm at Savoy Garage is the guy to buy off.
I remember my Grandparents had a grey one of these withe the 3 litre diesel that they took my cousin and I caravanning in, it was a really comfy car!
I think the Xantia was the last proper Citroen, my dad had one of them for a while and it was absolutely brilliant, that had the hydropneumatic suspension and it was like driving a sofa.
My C5 exclusive has much the same feel, and technology. The hydro suspension but unreported in many reviews is the torque on the 160 HDi 2 litre with the 6 speed manual. Flat roads and shes happy at 40mph in top crunching along at just over 1000 rpm. Change to 3rd or 4th and it goes.
Thanks Jay - Very cool car! That rear windscreen is bizarre .. but mesmerising 😄 it’s such a shame that design and styling have taken a back seat compared to paper stats and 0-60 times 🤷🏻
Nice wee tie in with the DS and a certain book series/movie
I remember this car tested on top gear once about how comfortable it is very rare car
I tried to persuade my daughter and son in law to buy one when they were looking for a good second hand car to accommodate the growing family. Shed loads SH over here, but unfortunately they have a reputation as a grandpa's car in France, so they bought a bloody C4 Picasso instead... yawn.
A second gen C5 with hydractive 3+ would have also been a wonderful choice and I’m certain if they’d have given cars with hydractive 3+ a try, they wouldn’t want to go with the picasso
If 'over here' means France yes there are alot for sale here but some good examples are quite expensive. Little doubt they're a beautiful car and may hold their value too
@@onelyone6976 did the X5 come with hydractive
@@onelyone6976 I recently bought myself a 2010 C5 2.0 HDI with Hydractive 3+. It is just so relaxing to drive. Get it on a motorway and you feel you could drive forever.

What a stylish motor! We haven't had Citroens over here for decades
We currently have a C6 3 litre diesel with Lounge Pack, what a wonderful car. Also have a DS and an SM, they are certainly relatives with good genes.
Good choice for a video, love this car
An awfully good video, earned my subscription.
Love the quirky c6, very under rated citroen!! The usual bonkers French styling
Looks weird. No comparison to the Germans either. French reliability is another issue to cause concern.
Nice one James. This was the favored car of one Nicolas Sarkozy...He was driven around in a nice blue one..
Sarkozy had a Renault Velsatis too and this one was bulletproof
Power!! First said by the old Jeremyas Clarksonius many moons ago. :-)
Such a shame they didn't make it over in the States. I love Citroën!
A beauty I managed to try one and it was lovely.
Mad era of Citroen..I love wierd cars, and this is on top of my list
Citroens are so cool. As an American I can't wait to one day ride or even drive one.
Your reviews are amazing. I wish Citroen stayed in the USA, as I would gladly buy this car. Maybe I’ll import one once it’s 25 years old.
I miss my C6, until I remember the way it chewed through ball joints, and EGR valves. That looks like a 2.7 HDi Lignage, which represent most of the examples on Auto Trader. The one that you want is 3.0 HDi, which was re-engineered and a little less prone to blowing up, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one on the road, but I know a handful do exist in the UK.
