- Video tutorial on how to replace the fuel filter on a Ford Ranger. A plugged fuel filters can cause poor fuel economy, a drop in performance, rough engine idling, and added strain on your fuel pump. The filter should be changed at maintenance intervals of about 40,000km or 25,000 miles, but this will dependant on your climate and driving conditions. This particular truck I am working with here today is a 1998 Ford Ranger 2wd equipped with a 2.5L 4cyl.

Push lock fuel fitting removal: • DIY: Removing a Push L...
Tools/Supplies Needed:
-safety glasses
-clean rag or cloth
-pan or container
-new fuel filter
-standard/flat screwdriver
-push lock fuel line disconnect tool
-ramps
Procedure:
-start by elevating the front of the vehicle safety
-using your owner’s manual, go to the chart and diagram outlining the fuses and relays
-locate the fuse relay in the manual which is number five and we an also see it’s location in the fuse box under the hood
-located the fuse box under the hood, it’s on the driver’s side close to the firewall above the fender well, then depress the tang on the one side and then flip the cover open
-remove fuse number five by pulling it straight out
-turn the engine over a couple times to ensure the pressurized fuel in the lines has been removed
-the fuel filter is located within the frame rail, in from to fate fuel tank on the driver’s side
-wear safety glasses to prevent any chance of fuel of spraying into our eyes as well as gloves to reduce the chance of fuel irritating our skin
-have a cup or pan handy to catch any access fuel which will come from the filter and lines, then dispose of properly
-pull the filter out of the spring bracket
-remove the retaining clips on the fuel lines, tenth backside of the retaining clip needs to be pushing down, push it towards the filter which will pop out the tangs to pull it out of place
-using the appropriate size fuel line disengaging tool, clip it onto the filter side, then push it towards the fuel line, and then remove it
-do the same for the other fuel line as well
-pair up the new and old filter, ensure they are similar in length, diameter, and fittings on the lines
-also check for the flow orientation and reinstall it in the correct position
-make sure there isn’t any dirt in the push lock fittings, then reinstall them on the new filter
-reinstall the metal retaining clips and clip the filter housing back into it’s bracket
-reinstall the fuel pump relay and start the truck
-the fuel system can be bleed, but you can also crank the engine over for a second until the air is pushed out of the fuel system
-if you find it takes a little longer, allow the starter to cool down and prolonged usage of the starter will result in it overheating which can cause damage
-once the trunk is running, inspect for any leaks

Thank you so much!
Just finished replacing the fuel filter on my 1999 Mazda B2500. It took me about 20 minutes thanks to your video!!! 😊. I had looked at other videos prior to attempting this and your's was by far the very best. Thank you!
Awesome to hear and happy to be of help :) I have plenty more videos for Rangers/B series trucks too.
Thank you for the video. Was given a ‘99 2.5L for free. Getting it going myself. I’m new at this and this was a big help. Do have a video on changing ALL 8 spark plugs? Thanks
You're welcome! Yes I do and here it is czcams.com/video/5Q09u5gDwss/video.html
Nice, Ive already changed my filter in my ranger but you have my exact truck and spark plug wires haha
Nice video all the details were mentioned thanks.
+Keenan Walker Thank you for the compliment. Yeah you definitely need patience with those plugs lol. By far the most complicated replacement I've ever done.
Good instructional video bro! I feel confident in replacing my own now. Thank ya sir!
Thank you! I have many more repair videos on this truck as well if you need them.
Thank you! Straight to the point, Love it!
No problem, happy to help!
The last guy to instal the line on the gas tank side crushed the metal head with some pliers a little and it will not come loose or off. Any ideas? The engine side of the line came off easy
Cut the line and put a new connector on it. Kind of like how you put a new head on a garden hose if it gets crushed or damaged.
Any advice or vidoe on how to change the fuel lines for the fuel filter
Very nice video! Concise yet thorough. Thank you!
+dogsbyfire Thank you for the compliment!
Was fuel still getting to the injectors before you change the filter
Exactly what I needed.Thank you.
No problem :)
Is it a good practice to make sure and disconnect the battery before removing the fuel relay?
No need to, the EFI circuit is controlled by the ignition. With the key off, there's no power going to the relay.
Fuel lines that connect from the engine ?
Where do you buy the fuel filter disconnects? or as you call it the push lock fittings.
Any auto parts store should carry them.
great video hopefully itll be the same on my mazda b2300
Thank you :) It should be the same or very similar.
great vid thank you for teaching us
Thank you :)
About how much fuel comes out of filter after disconnecting (following instructions correctly)
Have a pan handy to catch the fuel, I believe about a cup comes out.
@@4DIYers two water bottles full came out
Great video. I have one side of the old filter disconnected using a store bought disconnect tool (3/4" if I recall correctly). The back side (toward the fuel tank) doesn't want to disconnect for some reason. I'm watching the videos over and over to see if I missed anything. Any thoughts? Recommendations?
Ok got the other line out with a second set of hands helping. Now the challenge is getting the new filter seated/sealed. It is not clicking into place. Maybe the fuel lines/steel springs are shot?
Check to ensure the fuel filter is the correct type. Then look inside the line and make sure that o-ring hasn't popped out of it's location or isn't damaged.
I have a quick question. Is the flow supposed to be going towards the front of the vehicle or the rear? I am very new to working on cars so I am unsure.
Flow arrow points away from the fuel pump towards the engine.
That means "to the front".
Tanks amigo
No problem!
What would happen if I didn't use a disengaging tool?
You wouldn't be able to remove the lines. The tools are needed to disengage the clips on the lines.
Yeah, you do have to use a disengaging tool, BUT, if you don't have the proper tool a sharpie marker works beautifully. Cut about an in long section from the sharpie itself, not the cap, and split it down the center lengthwise so you can slip it over the fuel line and there you have it. Push it into the fitting to disengage the springlock clips and pull the line from the filter. I keep a couple sharpies in my toolbox just for this.
great job!
Thank you :)
Thank you👍🏾
Will this apply to mazda b3000?
Yes it should be.
Thanks! :)
No problem :)
