  • Episode #201 : A very bucking bronco anchorage
    Hello Friends,
On this episode we haul up at Little Fisherman's Cove and make way for Rippers Cove. It was a short motorsail of 4 miles and we had the anchorage all to ourselves. At first it looked very promising but soon the wind waves joined forces with the swell wrapping around the island making the anchorage very uncomfortable.
If the sea state was different this anchorage would be amazing!
As I mentioned in the episode if you would like to see a past episode about Little Fisherman's Cove you can view that here: • Anchoring in 15 knots ...

Rippers cove is my favorite anchorage on Catalina island. My dad would take me there for weeks at a time growing up in the 70’s to 90’s.

My favorite anchorage on the island. I once left Avalon to explore the northern islands, stopped the first night at Rippers and stayed there for 2 weeks!

Looks like a cool anchorage. I bounced around like that last time I anchored at Two Harbors. At least you dropped a stern anchor to keep your bow to the swells.

Have you ever used "Active Captain" to help determine where to anchor? It is useful for sailors that are not familiar with the area. you can also put in your own reviews. That way if you really love an anchorage you can give it a bad review. You will have it all to yourself. JK haha. love your videos.

I think that rock formation you saw was a conglomerate, a type of sedimentary rock. The sparkling in the rocks you saw on the beach are probably from mica minerals catching the sun. Thanks for the episode. Definitely makes me appreciate Catalina even more. I am new to the channel have you/will you go out and explore any of the other Channel Islands?

Sweet! Yeah..ws hit that same NW swell looks like. Awesome Anchorage though. Do you think the rocker stopper helped? Or kinda useless in those conditions?

Good morning James from down here in Nz. Yet another great episode. Just a quick tip. A glass of chilled milk will fix a sunburnt appendage. Just saying. I can see I'm going to have to come over teach you how to row your dinghy the conventional way. I learnt at age 4. Check out the Olympic rowers for method. Take care mate and stay safe. Atb.

I row Fisherman’s Style as described by Steinbeck in Log from the Sea of Cortez. since I am not racing in the Olympics and like to see where I am going it suits me just fine .

@@SailorJames hi James. Glad you took that as a bit tongue in cheek. I was taught by an old guy. Yes he liked fishing. Not sure if he was a commercial fisherman. The method I use is the same as transatlantic and transpacific rowers use. More strength in the shoulders than in the arms. It's the way i was taught. Take care mate. Hullo to Camille and a pat for Mr Steady.

An interesting trip over some of the geology of the island! This link may interest you and others -->> www.catalinaconservancy.org/index.php?s=news&p=article_322
The links to the right hand side explain that both gold AND silver were both found there - though I'm pretty sure the glittering you saw was mica in the igneous rocks ...
