I have always loved Sting's use of language in his songs and this song is a perfect example. Trying to convey the problem of being trapped between a rock and a hard place Sting uses a reference from Greek Mythology " caught between the Scylla and Charybdis". It's from the story of Odysseus who had the option of sailing past Scylla (a six headed serpent) or Charybdis (an all engulfing whirlpool monster.) Odysseus chose the lesser of two evils by sacrificing 6 of his sailors to Scylla rather than risk potentially his entire ship to Charybdis. It's a lesson in fear versus courage when making our choices in life.

    Lyrics:
    Verse 1]
You consider me the young apprentice
Caught between the Scylla and Charybdis
Hypnotized by you if I should linger
Staring at the ring around your finger
I have only come here seeking knowledge
Things they would not teach me of in college
I can see the destiny you sold
Turn into a shining band of gold
    [Chorus]
I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger
    [Verse 2]
    Mephistopheles is not your name
I know what you're up to just the same
I will listen hard to your tuition
You will see it come to its fruition
    [Chorus]
I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger
    [Verse 3]
Devil and the deep blue sea behind me
Vanish in the air, you'll never find me
I will turn your face to alabaster
When you find your servant is your master
    [Outro]
Oh, you'll be wrapped around my finger
You'll be wrapped around my finger
You'll be wrapped around my finger
    Ohh

When we read the section of The Odyssey that mentions Scylla and Charybdis in high school, my English teacher asked the class what those monsters made us think about. I raised my hand and said it reminded me of that saying 'being stuck between a rock and a hard place,' and she was stunned I got that this is where that expression comes from (back in 1986, pre-Internet). It seemed obvious to me, but no one else in my class got it (but I suspect many of them didn't bother to read the passage). Everyone read the assigned reading after that day for the rest of the excerpts from that book! Lol.
I read The Iliad and The Odyssey for the first time in 6th grade when I was obsessing over Greek and Roman mythology, so I had already read the whole book a couple of times before high school. I think I was the only one in my class who'd even heard of it previously. It was clear to me when this song came out that Sting had been a grade school English teacher, slipping references like this into his songs. Love him! X) :D

This is one of those albums that's hard to fully appreciate in hindsight because as good as the songs still are, they were game changers when the album was released. New sounds. Totally different. Very influential. You wonder where the songs even came from. So, definitely appreciate the older stuff (it's good), but don't forget to keep an ear out for the new game-changing songs (they happen periodically). Because the sounds are so new and different they might not initially be your cup of tea but if you listen to them a few times, the genius becomes more clear and you'll know you were first to hear a change in the fabric of music. A thrill.

When I heard this song the first time it brought forth the image of an old sorcerer capturing a young apprentice involuntarily through the power of a magic ring. The old sorcerer mainly wants to use the young apprentice as a servant and has little interest in teaching him. But the younger one is able to learn enough from the things the sorcerer says, and books that he leaves laying around. He eventually turn the tables, break his control, and overcomes him.

This song is about the relationship between a student of the mysteries and his teacher. In the late 80's, Sting began to study meditation, Tibetan Buddhism, and certain esoteric magickal practices. He makes reference to Mephistopheles, a classical demon name, and being trapped between Scylla and Carybdis, two monsters of legend that Odysseus had to get past or be devoured. He vies with his teacher in a push-pull of power, and finally outraces his mentor and becomes the master. It's quite a complex situation being described, and as usual, Sting tells half the story with the music itself. That long, plangent riff dropping like rain, so beautiful.

Amber, since you love Greek mythology, did you catch some Greek names in the lyrics? Scylla, Charybdis, Mephistophles? Those names make the song even darker it turned into like a small story of overcoming demons on a quest just like the ones told in ancient times Awesome symbolism!
