Building a Backyard Office and Production Studio | Studio Shed from Costco!

- With the price of houses going absolutely bonkers in California lately we decided to install a Studio Shed from Costco in our backyard. This decision saved us thousands of dollars by not of going with the traditional home remodel. I landed on the 10ft x 12ft Pagoda Signature Series Shed because I really loved the design but also wanted to reduce the amount of light coming in to the room. Hence the single door. This will give me greater control of the lighting when I start doing more live streams and content production.
This Studio Shed will act as my office and production room. I added several options onto the standard build including electrical & lighting, split system for Heating and AC and additional power outlets for TV & speaker mountain on the walls.
I'll be setting up the Studio Shed for CZcams live streams, voiceovers and video production. So stay tuned because the next step will be installing all the equipment I'll need to make it a fully functional studio. Speakers, sound proofing, microphones, mixer etc.

@@JOEMCKINLEY3 It's been SO good. Now that I've got everything finished I've been live streaming and producing everything out of the studio. Love it. I actually ordered it from Costco online. They didn't have anything about the Shed in stores. It looks like they currently have the Medano model available there. You could also go to Studio Shed's website and they have some great info and occasionally run 20% off specials on the do it yourself models. Also. The contractor we worked with was great. So if you decide you'd prefer to have someone else put it together like I did just shoot me an email and I could get you their contact info. They were great.

These are super cool. I went cheap and did a tuff-shed type shed and then finished it all out nice myself. Studio sheds are killer.
Yea the build quality is really fantastic. I got hooked by the exterior design but I'm really enjoying the space. I'm ALMOST done with the initial build out so look forward to putting out the next video to show the progress.
This looks GREAT! You will be super happy in your own, isolated workspace. It makes a HUGE difference. Throw a bookshelf, wingback chair, and a large throw rug and you'll have FAR better audio. Home Depot has surprisingly great deals and selection on rugs.

Dude, that's a nice Sactown shed/office! Having an extra space outside the house is endlessly useful (and awesome for the kids too!). Much better than a dusty shed, any day!
Totally! It's been so good having a studio that's isolated from the rest of the house. Great for recording voiceovers and editing vids.
Thats the most badass Tuff-shed I ever seen!!!! I don't have a cool name for it but I do suggest painting the underside of those eaves. It will protect to wood from the weather and termites!!! And It will just look more dialed.

That's one sweet setup. What about El Studirado? That's similar to a design I wanted a few years ago when I was working from home. Now I just don't have the land to build something like that so will have to live vicariously through you. Super envious and I can't wait to see how you kit it out!!

Price seems way too high still. I think a tuff shed built by them would have been half this price, and similar quality (tuff shed a little lower quality prehaps).

You only need to install lead sheet, sandwiched between 2 layers of drywall for soundproofing!

New/recent sub here. Just watched the bulk of your vids. Heard your interview on the Biker Bar and had to check out what was going on. Great stuff. Super funny too. I get your humor which probably does not say much about me.
So did you have to pour a foundation for the building? I am thinking of the same thing for my backyard but larger. Was going to build it myself but cost of materials here in Cali has put the project on hold. I'll have to check out Costco . . . .

So I had the local contractor build the foundation. It's not a concrete slab though they could have done that also. My time is so damned limited these days I really was just happy to pay a little extra and have it done. But you could theoretically setup your own foundation as well. The only downside is Costco seems to get random sheds in stock. Last I checked they had one but it did not include installation like mine did. So you could definitely keep an eye on their site or reach out to Studio Shed directly and see what kind of options you have.

So excited came across this video! Ive been dreaming of a Studio Shed backyard office for about 3 years now. I had no idea they were available through Costco and with installation! Im also located in Sacramento so its nice to see it installed and the contractor work in my area. Did that get set up through Costco as well? Or did you select one on your own? The shed looks great!
Yes! I was really excited that Costco had it all on their site. It looks like the model they currently have doesn't include installation but I can send you the information of the local contractor we worked with if you'd like. His crew was great.

Sure! So the siding color is VOLCANO GREY. The door color is RELENTLESS OLIVE. The Floor color is ASHLAR OAK. Hopefully that helps.

Question: Did they level the ground where they put the shed as well or did you have to hire someone else to do that?? I LOVE your studio. I'm working on a fundraiser to have my own studio for my podcast and hubby found your video and shared it with me and because of you I now know about Studio Shed! 🙂
I opted for the crew to build the foundation for the Shed as well so they were able to level that for me. There were two options. Build a concrete slab for the shed or raised foundation. I chose the latter. But they took care of that for me before starting construction on the shed.

did u have to pull any permits to get a shed/building in your yard? does your taxes/home insurance go up?
I did not have to pull any permits. Basically anything 120sq/ft and below does not require a permit.

So you can check out their website because they have a LOT of options for building sheds. They often offer free shipping and other deals as well. The square footage I have is 120sf I believe.

Hi, the shed looks amazing. I am based out of Davis and would like to install something similar in my backyard.
Any local regulations in Sacramento area i should be aware off or approvals you had to take before finalizing it
So I didn't come across anything in the process. The only thing I could find in terms of needing a permit was if the structure was larger than 120sq/ft. This is just at 120sq/ft so I'm good.

I've listed a cost breakdown in my description. As for the construction it was handled by a local contractor that Studio Shed works with.
Will you share how much this costs total by the time you bring in the contractor. I am trying to do it myself for the most part but will need electrical help. The Medano is $17,000, and the foundation is $3500 (may end up building the deck myself). I believe the kid does not come with floor or drywall so that is extra, is that right? Sorry to ask so many questions but I am excited to see Studio Shed from Costco goes up. I have been researching for over a year and end up deciding on Studio Shed as well
Good questions! So I've listed a breakdown of cost in the video description. Don't know why I didn't just add that from the beginning. I'm willing to bet prices are different in other areas as it would likely depend on the local contractor. But that might give you an idea of what to expect.

Yes. So it looks like they cycle models regularly on Costco's website. The model currently available is a do it yourself. So no install like mine had. If you have any questions about the process feel free to message me on IG. caliradokid I'm super stoked with the build.

I did not apply for a permit for the studio. According to what I read anything above 120sf needed a permit and this was just under.

Did you keep it 10x12 or under. I know larger than that requires Building Permits in Sacramento County and right now it’s a royal pain in the Butt dealing with the County. 🙄
Yes. I sure did. The structure is 10x12. Definitely made the process a lot easier.
