  • How can you tell if your ribbon microphone is blown?
In this tutorial John Jennings of Royer Labs explains how to test a ribbon microphone for a stretched (blown) ribbon element.
The ribbon element can be stretched or damage if hit with a string burst of air or if dropped. This video shows easy steps how to check if your ribbon has been damaged.

I absolutely LOVE my R-121 and switched to ribbon mics while recording wherever possible! Your mic was the 1st ribbon I bought and have since got the Beyerdynamic M160 and a pair of the Coles 4038's! Thanks for ushering me into the wonderful world of Ribbon recording!

    1. I store my ribbons vertically in their boxes, but the boxes are next to each other. Any risk there? Do I need to make sure the magnets are aligned?
    2. It would be cool if you could play an example of a recording of a bad ribbon when you move the mic side to side ~ shake test. Or show a light test of a ribbon that is bad.
    3. When you do the shake test, do you want the magnets perpendicular to the shake direction?

i was reading you site and you say you tune the ribbon to 16.7hz but i was wondering what machine is used to ensure that?

One of my ribbon mics make a sound during the "shake test". If I do the test just as the video "back and forth between 10 o' clock and 2 o' clock, it is fine. I only hear the noise if I do it from 8 o'clock to 4 o'clock. And it almost sounds like it could be mechanical noise from the cable or something. I have to do the shake test far more extreme to get a little sound. The mic sounds good and is the only Long motor I own. So I have nothing else to compare it to. All my others are smaller. Is it probably fine???

I bought one of these from Sweetwater last year and ever since I bought it, it has sounded boomy and muddy, so I'm wondering if this could be the problem. It has NEVER sounded good to my ears. That being said, this video would have been far more helpful if you would have told us how to dismantle the thing to properly inspect it.

What mic do you have? Most consumer microphones are condenser mics.
