It was the most special day of my whole life just seeing all my friends and family in the room, and it's even more special now that I get to share it with you guys. This was filmed on one of the stages on campus, and my friend Zach Vinson came in from Nashville to play piano. Hopefully, this concert provides some extra context behind the songs. 2. I’m Learning How to Swallow Pills
I’m learning how to swallow pills,
hope I’ll learn the trick in time.
I’ll be half of who I am today,
so my mom can sleep at night.
I felt the rain on a Tuesday morning,
it dripped straight into my head.
I brought it into everything, swamped
the stairs so I could swim into bed.
So, I’m learning how to swallow pills,
there’s a leak no one can find.
They’ll patch me up with pipework,
I hope to join my friends outside.
My books and my clothes all grew moldy,
even the ceiling fan started to droop.
Mom knocked, “sweet dreams,”
but the rain in me became a puddle
inside of my mouth.
What do you do with a body
that's been flooding the floors of the house?
The door stays locked forever,
but the water’s seeping out.
So, I’m learning how to swallow pills,
hope someday they’ll go down fine.
I’ll be half of who I am today;
at least half of me’s alive.
3. To the Lighthouse
Through the window,
dinner sat still like an art.
She looked through the window,
“We’ll go tomorrow.
The lighthouse ain’t far.”
She’s a stranger to weather;
she turns shelters to homes.
He wished she’d write letters;
she only rights wrongs.
“We can’t go tomorrow, silly woman.
Oh, the things you don’t know.”
Pass the salt,
pass from politics to poetry.
Passing gazes-
conversations happen silently.
He’s still blue with his manner
until she paints his name
as the centerpiece.
Hues of dinner cues
stain their hands
as they eat her work.
Time keeps on passing. Through
the window, the weeds choke the grass.
He’s tossing and turning, he reaches
out, and there’s no one to grasp.
She said tomorrow, silly woman.
So tomorrow, to the lighthouse,
he’ll go.
4. Silly Girls
Waiting a while, it’s dark
at the bus stop. Linking arms
through strangers and streets.
I won’t demand your unanswered
questions. All of your silence
makes sense to me.
I’ll give you my coat, my cash,
and my chapstick; write you a note
with nothing to say. Secrets we share,
braiding your hair, saying goodnight
at the end of the day.
I understand you’ll make new plans,
but for now, we have each other.

and sugar, hanging your drawings

5. Online Man Discovers His Salvific Vision of Beatrice
She was lit up as a picture
on his screen when he called her his saint.
The floor of his laptop burned
him as he guessed her age. He swore
the moment that he saw her, “What was lost
will now be found.” Whether child, girl,
or woman, angels need a man who’s down.
It’s a dark and lonely bedroom
when she’s not there. Close his blinds,
speak his mind, and make the keyboards blare.
Mother, mother, mother-
only a woman could understand.
Worship a picture of his Beatrice, pray
she’ll put a good word in.
The comments close in on him
in the trenches; no one else
has the guts to be so honest.
He’s alone, but he’s a soldier.
He’s a prophet with a plan.
With his Beatrice to gaze upon,
he can fight off any thread.
The wolves are coming, too cunning
in the dark woods. Beatrice
burns her innocence as his guide,
his torch, his martyr. The writing
on the entrance warns, “Abandon
all your hope.” But not even hell’s blue fire
burns beneath a weeping girl.
6. Perfect Thursdays
Victoria Station,
a family’s rushed to catch their train.
Her husband waits for her
as she’s digging through her things.
If I misplaced my ticket
or had bad luck with the machine,
would you be late to your appointment
if it meant sitting next to me?
On a perfect Thursday,
you’d wait for me.
On a perfect Thursday,
is it just a perfect Thursday?
Our future kids would all wear glasses
too big to fit their faces. We’d pour songs
into their nostalgia and fill their heads
with ancient myths. If they had a dream
outside your vision, would you paint
their every scheme, or would you stare
until they hear just how ridiculous they’ve been?

7. Mom and Dad
Mom and Dad fell into a rhythm
last spring. It took a fall
of getting used to a winter
without me. It takes a couple hours
now to drive from home
to home. It takes just a second
longer now to find where everything belongs.
Dad’s clinging onto his camera,
Mother to stories and rhymes.
I’m holding on to how small I am;
we’re all holding onto time.
There’s a guest in my childhood
bedroom. The clothes in the closet
still fit. Dad doesn’t run all his miles anymore.
Mom walks with a scuff to her step.
I’m clinging onto my camera, onto words
that she left between lines. My siblings hold
onto how small I am, wind the tapes
back one last time.
I’ll play piano in basements.
I’ll solve a crossword at noon.
Until everything’s moving a little too fast
for steps I just can’t get to move.
Everyone fell into their rhythm last spring.

I have to tell it: I’m in love with your world. In a few years you went from being a smiling, timid teenager aside to your sisters and brother, to be a fully grown, legit poetess. Julianne, there is some greatness in your way to write and interpretate your songs. There is a purity of sentiment that enlarges the heart of a soon to be old boy like me of at least three sizes. I thought that in the world all love and purity and shyness and good feelings went lost forever. I cannot say whom you resemble. You are a Joni Mitchell, a Bob Dylan in a young woman shape. As a father, I would be proud to have you as a daughter. As a man, I bless you to have given me back some hope that good is still somewhere. I'm french from Québec who follows the The Pedersens since 2 years ago with Joy. Since months ago I began to think that Julianne should have à solo carreer as à songwriter and singer and I imagined her at the top like Dua Lipa or Lauren Daigle. This concert is the beginning of it. Bravo et merci.

Julianne. That was magnificent! I am of course struck by your level of talent. Your voice sounded so wonderful. You looked so beautiful as well. As did Katie. Who looked so proud to be a part of what you were doing, and so proud of her sister as well. Julianne, this was such a reinforcement of what I have been seeing in you over the last couple of years. Your ability to stand in the light and perform. Gone (at least externally) is the timidity we used to see whenever a very young version of you, although loving be able to perform, had some trepidation about the gaze of an audience. A great part of the maturity which has developed in you is your being able to put that aside and face an audience. It certainly helps when one has the talent to construct such beautiful work and deliver it so well. Congratulations. This was truly so wonderful. I will be watching to see whatever comes next. I will be watching this several more times and sharing it too. Thank you for sharing this with us all. Stay safe and well.

I’ve just listened to Beatrice,& I love it.
Though it's not the style of music I generally seek out, I have to admit that the longer I listened the more mesmerized I became. Trying to determine why this was I realized it was because of how honest and revealing the songs were.
Julianne displays not only her youth and beauty of soul but also her great and active intellect searching for understanding of God's creation and her life's part in it.

Congrats on your first solo EP, Julianne. It's quite different from what you normally do with the family band but I enjoyed it a lot. A very personal, literary and melodic album. You're a very talented songwriter and must have been working very hard on the project together with the other musicians and engineers at Forty-One Fifteen the last couple of months. Well, it really paid off, and I think it's fair to say that poems can definitely function as songs. You proved that.

Dear Julianne, I'm so glad I waited until a peaceful Sunday afternoon to sit down and listen to your concert and read your beautifully written lyrics alongside. You have such a natural way to speak to the human heart, and are so gifted. I loved all of the pieces. It almost brought tears a few times, I felt my two daughters and myself in many of the phrases. Thank you for that, I miss them (they are grown and on their own) and don't see or hear from them much, and this helped me to feel. Julianne, your capstone project concert was great, with the great work by Zach. Your voice is angelic, and your ability to write poems and lyrics is beyond measure... The last three songs and their stories were wonderful, outstanding, and touching... Great job, Julianne!!!
Recovering now from crying for about 30 straight minutes as I watched this. I've loved The Petersen's music for awhile now (helped me out of a tough time in my life and helped spark my own musical journey several years ago). I absolutely loved the harmonies and the way you all came together, but it was amazing to hear you express your own voice now. The lyrics have a poetic artistry and sort of complexity and simplicity at the same time that I usually have to go back to songs written decades ago to find and wasn't at all expecting to hear in so many songs all of a sudden today.
This was so good! Your voice is so pure, unique, innocent, and beautiful. Your song-writing is vulnerable and introspective. This kind of authenticity and talent will take you far! Congrats!!
Julianne signed my Octave Mandolin after a concert in Logan Utah a couple of years ago. She played around with it for maybe 30 minutes before the Family band concert.
That mandolin was stunning! Such a fun memory!

Hi Julz! I spent the morning listening to "Beatrice". I knew I was going to like it, but I have to say the album truly exceeds all expectations! I do not exaggerate to call it a small masterpiece! All the songs are very fresh and original. Really excellent arrangements. Your voice is nothing short of fantastic! I immediately fell in love with "Silly Girls", with its movement in ¾ it immediately enters my head and never comes out. I found myself whistling "I'm Learning How to Swallow Pills" after the first listen. Congratulations to you and to all the musicians, especially the pianist. But I have a request, to you or to whoever can do it (Liz too I think): is it possible to have the lyrics somehow? How does one family have so much musical talent? Amazing.
I was so pleasantly surprised when I saw a thumbnail in my feed with your name on it. I couldn't click on it fast enough. While I can't be sure that you even remember me, back when you were still in charge of The Petersen's CZcams channel you and I would correspond from time to time when I posted a comment that made you feel good. I always loved those short interactions. That's why it turns out that this particular video is so meaningful to me. Because I used to tell you that I believed in you so much and that I knew that you could do exactly what you're doing here. The fact that you have developed a thirty minute set of originals and you have produced a solo album makes me feel very happy for you.
In the past I've tried to find a way to use the written word to describe the very unique sound of your voice. Which isn't easy to accomplish.
Because the correct adjective that would help me to attain that goal has eluded me for a few years now. For a long time I think the best I could come up with is the phrase "one of a kind". But that phrase (although accurate) is just not enough to satisfy what I was trying to fulfill in regards to characterizing what I hear when I listen to you sing. I can keep working on it but the fact remains that I am well aware that nobody could possibly understand what I'm trying to say about you until they hear you for themselves. You have been gifted with a truly idiosyncratic tone in your voice that can best be defined as God given. Couple that with the slight tremble in your vocal that comes naturally in your delivery and you truly are one of a kind Julianne.
One of the hardest things for a vocalist to do is to go up on stage solo with only a guitar or a piano accompaniment and do a good job. But you did so good Julianne and I for one am not surprised one bit. Because I always knew that you had this in you. That's why I used to talk to you about it all the time. You have been given something special and you're putting it to good use. This is merely the beginning. There are what some people refer to as incremental steps of initiation that everyone must work through to get to where they want to be in life. With this performance you have taken another step. Never forget that no matter where you are in your progression I will always be encouraging you to take the next big step.

First of all, many congratulations on the album and the project/concert! It’s always a joy to hear you sing, but I’m becoming more and more impressed by your abilities as a songwriter! My decidedly non-poetic brain will probably still be pondering over some of these lyrics for a good while yet (I’d take this over T.S. Eliot any day). I especially liked Mom and Dad; as a current college student, that one hits kinda close to home.
Anyway, thank you for sharing your music, really great work again on all of these songs, and best of luck with whatever your next project is! God bless!
