    I seem to be repeating myself every time I watch one of your videos, but I absolutely love your designs! If there is any problem with the pieces you design for me, it’s that I wouldn’t have enough room in my home for every one of your designs that I’d like to build.

    If you were wondering if your designs would sell, I think you have your answer: they do.
    You have exactly the right attitude toward the hand plane: it does something useful and is fun. So many are paralyzed knowing they might not be using it perfectly. Just use it.

    Moving, thats great, congrats on the new home. So you are selling this one? What will your shop be in the new house? A video of setting it up would be great. I love using that wood, we call it ambrosia maple. Leaving the live edge was a good touch, makes it an individual piece, custom. It looks really good. Wood that heavy, if you stub your tow on it, its your toe that is gonna give and not the table, LOL.

    Shara, once again you have showcased those creative juices. Love the scene where you are applying the clearcoat as it allows us to see those colors come to life. I really appreciate the amount of effort this project took. I have a couple of live edge planks that have been sitting on the floor for about a year. Maybe your video is enough to inspire me to do something with them. I hope your move works out well for you. My last and final move ended up with a smaller house and a big shop! @@WoodshopDiaries Watched your video again because I wanted to see you using the dowels in your project. Dowels take a bit more time than screws but they make the project timeless, by that I mean they last forever, like 50 to 100 years. A table as beautiful as the one you just built should be around and admired for at least that long!

    You just got lucky on the table with the glued top. If the humidity changes that table can still crack because wood can expand 15% across the grain. This table will last way longer the way you made it this time. Love the design 👌

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Před 2 lety

      Maybe. The old table is still perfect three years later despite being attached “improperly.” AND not sealed on the underside 🤷‍♀️ I believe it’s got plenty more years ahead of it. But, either way, it’s not my table anymore, so I hope this one lasts me a good while instead. 😄

    Great job and beautiful table. Wood movement on indoor furniture is not that big of a deal because living spaces are climate controlled. The changes in relative humidity and temps are not that great indoors. I would estimate the most that a top that size would move is about 1/8 of an inch. That said, wood moves across the grain, so the tabs are more effective if you install them on the narrow sides and allow for that direction of movement.

    Moving Tip: Forget labels and sharpies. Get several colors of duct tape and use a color for each room. The boxes will get to the right room the first time and then when you need to find something you have a much smaller set of boxes to search. Good Luck.

    Another option to milling your assembled top is to haul the top to the mill and have them plane and drum sand it. Perhaps not practical for a one-off project though.

    My brother has a dining with storage when you lift the head and rear part of the table. The dining table came with a bench with table. Is that something you can build? It doesn't need to be exactly like that but I thought it was cool to have a dining table or table in general with storage.

    Awesome. I wished I had of known about those tabs 2 weeks ago. After a month long build..my very first...desk...6 ft long..the top was where i had a slight issues on how to attach. if you were NOT using those tabs, how would you attach the top? BTW my first build...horrible..but its solid, it works and i like it. (2 hidden drawers behind cab doors and two other drawers. Also a hutch with 4 cab doors and a center shelf with lighting). I am like you, sanding and staining/top coating is pretty boring. i used only a few small hand tools... and i have no place to build anything. so backyard on a slope using a 3 3/8 hand saw, jigsaw and sander. that was it. OM also...noticing the glue you are using. I use the same one. I had watched a few other videos of guys building things, they were all using the Tilebond. UGH. It's very runny. Gorilla glue is not like that...so Gorilla glue is my fav.

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Před 2 lety +1

      I discuss this a little more in the tutorial here:
      www.woodshopdiaries.com/how-to-build-a-diy-contemporary-dining-table/
      But there are lots of ways to attach the top. Some are “wrong” but I’ve done them before and some are “right” and they didn’t work. So it’s really something you need to just try and see. You can use L brackets, screws, glue. Theoretically, glue and screws are bad options because ether don’t allow for wood movement. However my last table like this three years ago, I used glue and it’s been fine.
      My thoughts are that it depends on what you’re making. For example, this table, if anything happened, the worst is the top develops a small crack. Nobody dies, gets hurt, and there’s no major damage. The table still functions fine and is useful. There’s just a crack. So you have to determine the worst case and then weigh the risk and do what seems best.

    • @crazydoglady5
      @crazydoglady5 Před 2 lety

      @@WoodshopDiaries oh wow..never thought of the wood expanding or contracting...ugh. I actually used screws...maybe 4 or 5 total. lets hope it doesnt crack. I dont think it will with how i did it...LOL... I didnt want to use glue because if i needed to move it, i wanted to remove the top to do that. NEVER thought about L brackets either. ok..next project. LOL Thank you Shara. You are great!
