  • Beating a deer's may be easier than you think, when you follow these highly proven tips for controlling your scent. Thermals, the amount of wind and your stand location are all key factors for learning how to cheat the wind. While scent control begins with your stand location, the art of beating a deer's nose will rely on your ability to practice these various deer nose-busting hunting tips.
    To beat a deer's nose you first have to choose the best day to head to the woods! Check out the HuntCast whitetail weather prediction app that I personally helped develop for your future deer hunting success. Please visit: huntwise.com/sturgis

    Been deer hunting 40 years but just started bow hunting this year and realized I don’t know how to deer hunt! Lol. Get in close is tough. Finally got close enough this morning but I didn’t get a clear shot. Best thing is, I watched this non typical pushing 2 smaller bucks around for 1/2 hour inside 30 yards and watched them disappear without ever knowing I was there! Even though I didn’t get a shot I was comfortable with, it was one of the best mornings I’ve had deer hunting. I slipped back out the way I came with the deer non the wiser. Love these videos! I’ve learned so much that I never though of while shooting deer in a green field. Thank you.

    Dan Infalt has a ton of good info on thermals, how they interact with the hills, etc. Also using milkweed has been a game changer and eye opener on how wind/breezes actually travel in the woods. The powders only show what the wind is doing 5ft (or so) away from you. Watching milkweed float and paying attention to how it travels is really amazing and a fantastic learning tool (plus its free)

    Couldn't agree more with all of this. I think it's worth pointing out to people that are not familiar with thermals that what you mean by up in the morning down in the evening is that The thermals are actually going down for the first hour or two of hunting light then switch and go up until the last hour or two of hunting light. you kind of clarified that later in the video, but I wanted to point it out in case anybody missed it.
    Also, have you ever considered doing a live video with q&a? It's very popular.

  • @northernwhitetailstrategy1773

    Hi Jeff! When I was in my teens I was surrounded by scent control fanatics. Some can be so foolish and the misinformation even comes from guys I look up to (think a prominent scent lok advocate who believes him getting minimum of 30 feet up in a tree has nothing to do with not getting winded by close deer). The best scent control I ever used was not going through puberty when I first started hunting at 10! I get a little more stinky these days at 23 lol! I found a happy middle ground with my scent routine that seems to work just fine on a budget!

    Hunting the tallest point of a ridge is key. If I’m hunting a ridge that runs north to south I know I’m gonna be ok with a west wind that’s 5-10mph with deer bedding East or traveling in front of me or on the eastern side of the ridge. You can get away with that 9 out of ten times on a hill as opposed to flatter land. Any wind running along the ridge will falling thermals you’re toast! Good stuff.

If the bedding area is in front of me down below the top of the ridge would you ever consider hunting that stand in the morning if say you had a North West wind blowing towards the bedding area in the morning because of the rising thermals? Let say you have a finger off trees that runs northeast/southwest. Within it is a travel corridor. There is good tree cover on both sides of this corridor. If there is a moderate wind blowing from northwest to southeast would you expect the deer to be in the travel corridor or on the leeward side of this finger of trees? Southwest of this finger is a picked soybean field. I am using it as a wind blocker because I don’t expect them to be out there.

    I'd say the best way to look at Scent Control is the attempt to be the least offensive possible. The more offensive you are, the further downwind you will put deer on edge, and the longer your trail through the woods will put deer on edge. The idea is to minimize not eliminate. Say the wind swirls quick for some reason, and goes the exact opposite direction you want it to. The worse you smell the larger the area that will be impacted by that scent deposit, and the longer it's going to last. Take two identical situations of a buck walking downwind of a hunter, one does everything to minimize scent, the other does nothing. At 20 yards, he's going to smell both, but as you get further away, the hunter that practices sent control will disappear faster. So maybe at 100 yards one hunter is no longer detectable down wind, while the other one is still very much detectable. He may be detectable out to 200 yards or more. (random made up numbers) It's all about minimizing how offensive you are to the deer's nose. And of course try to use the wind to your advantage and what not, but sometimes unexpected things happen.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  Před 3 lety

      The cool thing is...very easy to predict the wind. Stand location will determine that you never spook deer. So important to not leave a scent trail thru the woods when you hunt, but if the wind swirls or a buck gets downwind...that was just bad planning. I can honestly say that nearly 100% of my top 75 bucks would have been shot regardless of how I smelled from the stand....that's close to 30 on public land as well.
      I love to minimize my scent for the walk in but if a buck gets downwind while I am on stand,, I hunt like the hunt will be ruined and I encourage folks to do the same. I find the biggest scent freaks are typically the least experienced/successful hunters.

    What are your thoughts on hunting calm mornings when the sun is out creating rising thermals? I think your scent lifts up in the air and over the deer on those type mornings, even in flat country. Also Ive noticed on days with gusty winds, no matter how strong, there is a backdraft effect between gusts. The wind will turn around and blow 180 degrees in the opposite direction in between gusts.I have all but given up hunting on those days.

      @@jasonphillips73 just where did i say i was good? Nobody is bragging.
      And sitting in a tree is not hunting, it's waiting. To hunt, is to seek, to pursue. None of that is being done, sitting on a seat up in a tree. I'm not knocking it, i said that i have a blind and a stand. For some deer, that's the only way to possibly get them. But sitting in a tree and waiting for a deer to come to you is not hunting that deer. It's hoping, not hunting.

    This being my second season, I still have a hard time visualizing what you're talking about with thermals and winds on hills. Also, trying to determine the difference between a morning stand and evening stand.

      Hi Aaron, best of luck! I have 14 wind and thermal videos of mine in my playlist...hope you like them 🙂 A morning stand is away from food and near bedding...an evening stand is near food and allows you to get into the stand without spooking deer in bedding areas.

      @@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 thanks for the response! I'll see which of those videos I haven't watched yet. I know you touched on stand location in a recent video. That helped clear up the confusion a little for me. Winds just seem to elude me for whatever reason.

      Best thing to show you thermals, get some dry milk weed, and drop one from your tree stand.

    Where I hunt, the land is pretty flat. Do thermals still matter?

    • @zzz7zzz9
      @zzz7zzz9 Před 3 lety

      @Fried Chicken yes, but he asked do they matter. On flat land, winds would matter more than thermals. Thermals are more existant, and a factor, in varying terrain, mountains, gullies, etc.

      I always set out a smoking scent stick when i sit. It tells you wind direction plus sends out scent, which also has to help mask you as well.
