  • This is NOT a Onewheel. It's called a Trotter Magwheel T3 and it's an electric skateboard with one wheel. While it looks like a Onewheel XR and is meant to be ridden like a Onewheel XR or Onewheel Pint, it is very different from the Onewheels made by Future Motion and we hope to show you that in this video.

That comment by Wren at the end is why FM should be nervous. E.g. the floatwheel is a fully open platform, so it's catching up quickly. Once the software is figured out there's not much to stop trotter and others taking advantage of it and adding the extra power that the market wants. Good to see you showing the options are out there. Hope to see another collab with Mario sometime so maybe you can compare the floatwheel as well.

@Bean Oak well when you have millions in venture capital that is used solely for legal actions against any possible competition it kinda makes it easy to keep the market cornered. if one wheel is better...buy it. But they know if competition is allowed to exist they will get absolutely shit on. So instead of innovating....they stifle. The OneWheel XR has been around for three years with an asking base price of $1,799 without any significant updates. This is unusual in the realm of motorized products and was one of the reasons potential buyers were hesitant in buying one in 2021. Future Motion should divert their legal budget in suing other companies and improve their product in a timely manner. Despite the number of shortcomings, Magwheel entering this specific market should shake things up.
Come on FM, the average 14 miles range on the XR is ridiculous. Range anxiety is a real thing.

    • @HDMediaUK
      @HDMediaUK Před 2 lety +6

Would probably be a worth a revisit vs the GT looking at more than just out of box experience. Secret shopper it, test the support on both sides. Test how easy it is to solve problems yourself and then fix them. Does Trotter sell you parts? Do they lock firmware? Can they accurately diagnose a simple issue over the phone or email or do they FM it and ask you to ship it back to them blanking out the battery warning on the box.
Stuff like that. Stuff people will experience if they have the 1k+ product for a sensible period of time (3+ years).

I have one of the first Magwheels in the states. I'm on the first controller and agree about the jerkiness, etc. I'm not an amazing rider, but I'm solid on trails with my Pint. Joe from IE rode my Mag on trails with me because I thought my Mag was broke. I couldn't keep up with him. The Mag takes different muscle memory and coming from a OW is a disadvantage if you try to go to a Mag. FM does have a secret sauce that makes their boards super smooth and I prefer them (because I need that compensation) but if the new Mag controllers catch up the Trotters are gonna be good competition for FM.

Jimmy is attempting to mount this thing the same way he mounts the Onewheel, having the back side on the ground and the front side up. This works fine for the Onewheel because the sensors are on the front and as you mount and put presure on the front, it moves forward. The T3 has sensors in both the front and back and mounting the back foot first causes it to go on reverse as it engages. The best way to mount this T3 is opposite to the Onewheel, mounting the front foot first and then the back foot, this way it will always move forward when you mount. It takes time to get used to it, especially if you've been riding a Onewheel for a while.

I have a trotter and not a onewheel. The best way I've found to mount the trotter is to put the back foot on, and then use your front foot to give the board a little shove forward (as opposed to pushing down on the footpad like you do on a onewheel). Aim to push the board and your body 3-6" forward with the shove, and put your body weight into it. It will take this forward motion and use it to balance as it levels out. Doing that makes the mounting process MUCH smoother.

    Hey Jimmy,
it's the German guy who asked you to do a review of the Trotter ... two years ago. I'm glad to see that you finally gave it a shot :-)
Considering countless comments of the past years that came down to mere 'knock-off' verdicts, I expected lots of condescending remarks on the Chinese competitor. Well, maybe the overall vibe about the FM monopoly has changed a bit since then. And maybe your channel attracts a different kind of audience.
I don't have any experience with the 1500 watt T3 but it seems that the product still needs some refinement. Same phenomenon to be seen when new EUC's enter the market. And, in my opinion, the battery size for now doesn't match the appetite the bigger motor comes with.
But being the happy owner of a 700 watt Trotter since 2017, I can assure everyone that the Trotter company builds devices you can count on. Apart from a battery upgrade from 4.4 Ah to 7 Ah [which a local expert did for me - without getting sewed or anything] my Trotter has remained in its original state. The tire e.g. looks just the way it did when I received it. And I ride offroad most of the time.
I'm looking forward to see the evolution of the Trotter MAGwheel and I hope that the OneWheel community will keep an eye on it, too. It's good to have the freedom of choice, isn't it?
    Best wishes, Nordlicht.

Mounting my Trotter [I ride regular, so my right back foot is down] is buttery smooth, I can pretty much level it on a dime, stand still on it and go either way - as Jimmy put it in the video: just let it do its thing, get the hang of it, don't jerk around.
When stopping, hopping off is best for me, front foot to the left, back foot to the right, Trotter stands upright in the middle.
If the 1500 watt should generally fall to the closed side of the rim and beep immediately ... now that should be annoying.

@@freshlycharged Good review Jimmy, but... Think of a trotter as EUC in terms of balancing algorithm and try lowering the tyre pressure a bit. Tyre takes more round shape when over inflated and starts rubbing against the foot plates and makes it over correct little balance corrections. That should resolve the jitter issue. I'm 200 lbs running ~ 26 psi and haven't had any jitters on T3. The ones in the video look quite bad. Also if you get the hang of mounting, you can push the board to level like you do with FM onewheel, you don't need to wait for the board to level itself.

neat to see something is trying to be like the onewheel but I think it definately needs tuning. FM not being right to repair friendly is eventually going to lead to their downfall if they dont change and people figure out the ride of the onewheel and what makes it that way. I know the DIY is getting close but isnt there yet. I would love for my next board to be something not from FM and something I can maintain myself long term. for now like everyone else I will just hop on my XR and it is what it is.
