    About four years ago I got to spend a glorious week with a Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. I loved my 7 days with what was at the time billed as one of the most advanced (and expensive) hair dryers ever made. Ever since I’ve been wondering about the long term; was the Dyson test a fad and I was just giddy with anticipation? Or is this hair dryer really something I should have just bought for myself back then and never looked back.
    I recently had the opportunity to spend some more quality time with the Dyson Supersonic so I could revisit that initial experience, and see if I feel the same way after being able to use it more often and more regularly.
    For those who may be unfamiliar, Dyson, makers of cyclonic bagless vacuums and bladeless fans and heaters announced its new hair dryer probably about 4-5 years ago now and it almost instantly achieved cult status. The Supersonic hair dryer features similar technology to its other products, but refined and on a much smaller scale.
    The hair dryer looks completely different from traditional dryers. For starters it’s shaped like a cylinder and is open in the middle. It’s flat on both ends so it resembles a tube. That’s because the motor is not in the head of the dryer like traditional models, in Dyson’s case it’s in the handle.
    Dyson Supersonic: What’s in the box
    I received one of Dyson’s special gift sets, which arrives in a beautiful leather box with a plush interior. The box is a beautiful place to store your Supersonic when it’s not in use and looks luxe on the bathroom shelf (or you could use it to store makeup too!)
    The dryer comes with a long, heavy duty cord (that’s 2.7m) and it does have a large and boxy electrical unit near the plug. There’s probably more than enough cord for most home users, and even for a salon. Indeed, Dyson describes this cord as “salon length”.
    There’s a diffuser cone for managing curly hair, two styling nozzles that attach with magnets (very clever!), a rubber mat, and a string loop for hanging.
    Dyson Supersonic Features
    The Dyson dryer has some smart features that make you wonder why no one thought of them before the Dyson engineering team did.
    Magnets
    For starters, the nozzle attachments snap on with strong magnets, making attaching and detaching them ultra easy.
    Computer guts
    The dryer contains a computer microprocessor, which Dyson says is constantly measuring temperature, so it’s able to hold its heat settings more accurately, longer. Dyson says the ability to do that helps protect your hair’s natural shine.
    Improved weight & balance
    Dyson chose to place the motor for the dryer into the handle, which results in a better balance for the device. No longer will your blow dryer feel heavy after lengthy drying sessions (plus this dryer aims to cut drying time anyhow). With the bulk of the weight in the handle, it feels less heavy in your hands.
    Ionic technology
    Plenty of hair dryers today come with ‘ionic’ technology which is said to reduce frizz and static, and Dyson’s Supersonic does too. Negative ions are emitted from this dryer which should make things easier on your hair. I’ll report back…
    Heat and airflow Settings
    The Supersonic has 4 heat settings; 100°C, said to be for fast drying and styling, 80°C which Dyson labels ‘regular drying,’ 60°C for gentle drying, and a 28°C ‘constant cold’ setting for cooling, smoothing and setting your style.
    Similarly, speed of the airflow is adjustable to three different levels; there’s ultra high for fast drying, regular and low.
    How Dyson Supersonicc hair dryer works
    The Supersonic dryer has 1600 watts of power. While that sounds like a lot, it’s actually quite common in professional or even drug store hair dryers.
    Testing & My Review - Dyson Supersonic
    I usually only dry my hair two or three times per week, mainly to try to keep it healthy, but also out of laziness; I feel like it takes up time needlessly.
    With the Dyson Supersonic, I noticed right away that my drying time is shortened significantly, a huge plus. The other thing that’s immediately apparent is how soft my hair feels after drying. Like silk. My hair is easily as silky as it’s ever felt.
    I decided to time my dry time with both the Dyson and my old Conair.
    So, would I buy this hair dryer for myself? Oh, man, I really want to… because it made my hair feel great. At $500CAD it is definitely an investment.
    Bottom line; if you can afford this dryer, if you dry your hair daily, if you’ve got lots of hair, or your lifestyle is such that a few minutes are worth getting back, you’ll love it!
    The Dyson Supersonic sells for $499 CAD on Dyson’s website . It’s $399 USD on Amazon Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer (Iron/Fuchsia)

    Hi Erin, thank you for touching on all the technical as well as basic aspects of this product. It is very helpful. In this video, you explained in Dyson hairdryer, one of its features is the ability to measure the temperature to adjust heat settings which help to protect the hairs from heat damage.
    Did you share any video which has the comparison of Dyson Supersonic hairdryer V/S Special edition Dyson Airwrap Complete?
    Since both products are very expensive.
    If I purchase 'Special edition Dyson Airwrap Complete' (As have a need of hairdryer for my husband and a hair styler for me ), does the HairDryer come in 'Special edition Dyson Airwrap Complete' has the ability to measure the temperature to adjust the heat as well??.. the way "Dyson Supersonic hairdryer" has?
    Please reply.

    What a thorough and helpful review, thank you!! I am feeling SOOOOOOO pumped now to try my new Dyson hair dryer today - it just arrived in the mail yesterday. I've wanted a Dyson hair dryer for years and, after strategically saving Optimum Rewards points for months, was able to purchase it for a grand total of $180.00 (after the points redemption) from the Shoppers Drug Mart online beauty boutique. Just a thought in case anyone is concerned about the cost (as I very much was!). I do believe this is an investment and do not plan on purchasing another hair dryer for at least another decade, so, over time I have a hunch this will be well worth it.

    If you use a metal round brush you wouldn't need to flat iron. The metal/ceramic barrel smooths the hair like a curling iron while the brush holes allow more airflow as you dry.

    But I don’t read it somewhere?

    • @ErinLawrenceTV
      @ErinLawrenceTV  Před 2 lety +1

      Hair definitely picks up water; moisture can make it frizzy, oil can make it limp and dryness can give your flyaways. Time of year definitely impacts it.

      @@ErinLawrenceTV but you don’t see difference when you use another normal hair dryer? For me it seems like this hair dryer makes it to soft. And flat. To soft. And that makes it feel like the weight of my hair is less. It’s feels thinner looks thinner

  • @OMGWTFLOLSMH
    @OMGWTFLOLSMH Před 4 lety +12

    I would pay $200 for this, mostly because of the sleek design, quieter and stronger airflow. $500 is laughable. I'm using a 20+ year old dryer I bought at Zellers or Sears for under $20 and it still works great, with stronger than normal airflow. When it dies, I'll need to find something similar, but I will not be paying $500, unless I win the LottoMax jackpot.

    • @JaeGemini
      @JaeGemini Před 4 lety +6

      It sounds laughable but I been using it for a year. I barely get spilt or damage ends anymore and my stylist don’t have to cut as much anymore. I have fine hair so I always had an issue with blow dryers. I don’t have that problem with this dryer. Plus I get no frizz. I also have very tight curls that come to about my mid back and this dryer cut my drying time in half. That’s part of the reason i think I’m getting less damage because I’m not constantly going over the same section. Yes it’s $500 but I figure I got my money back in needing less hair cuts throughout the year.

  • @zulemaarroyofarleymedium

    Bought TWO Supersonics. Both overheated, stopped working. Nordstrom's credited albeit were just days after warranty expired. Bought new one at Dyson NYC flagship. Stopped working literally at the two year mark when warranty nearly ran out. Dyson refuses to stand behind its products. They are aware given the thousands of complaints that the hair dryers have a limited lifespan and they malfunction with the same issues (overheating/not turning on). I bought in 2021 a European Dyson in Paris. I know it will be a matter of time it will stop working and I've only used it 20 times at best. Don't buy a hairdryer. It won't last. I was happier with the 75.00 turbo hair dryer that lasted 10 years. A $500 hair dryer should last an eternity and not fail at the two year mark or prior.

      Please note that only the USA sold version have that box built within the electrical cord, because for some reason they still use the far less efficient 110 volt power supply, unlike almost all of the rest of the world. It contains a step-up transformer so you can use the 220-240V device on your power supply. Chances are it will make a humming or buzzing sound. Who knows, maybe one day the Americans might even catch up to the rest of the world and convert to the metric system too!!

As most things Dyson, it is over engineered and 99% marketing to justify the over inflated price.
