  • If your baby is suddenly waking more often at night, or suddenly they'll only sleep on you, you're probably wondering what has happened to your sleepy newborn...
    When this happens and your little one is 3-5 months old, it usually means your baby is going through what's known as the 4 month sleep regression. This sleep regression is totally normal. It's not just a phase.
    In fact, it means your baby's sleep pattern has matured! So it's kind of a 4 month sleep progression 😁. Even though it may not feel like it yet.
    The 4 month sleep regression can be a very tricky time for parents. But it doesn't have to be!
    In this video I share 6 simple sleep tips to help reduce the impact of the 4 month sleep regression and ensure you don't accidentally fall into some unhelpful habits which lead to even more broken sleep.

      We're trying as gently as possible. Putting him down for naps in his crib and trying to comfort him back to sleep if he wakes too soon.
      The new behaviour was like a light switch.. We were regularly getting 6 hours a night then, flick he's up every hour after the first 4. Makes life difficult when I work full time and my wife is studying.

    I have a 7 week old (my first child), thanks to your information I've learned so many things I did 't know before. I believed so many of the myths. Such as babies needing to be able to sleep in a noisy environment, and I didn't know that even though they might look asleep that it's their way of coping with busy surroundings. It's helped me get my baby girl in quite a good sleeping rythm. Some of my family (particularly mother in law) thinks I'm a little too uptight about her sleeping patterns and her sleeping in a dark and quiet area instead of the busy area of the house during the day, but so far she's extending her night sleeps from 11 - 3 'o clock sleep to feed, to 11 - 4:30! So far so good...
    Also my MIL was over a few days ago and was holding her for 3,5 hours... I have trouble standing up for myself and let it go for this once, and boy did I regret it. She cried from the afternoon when my MIL left to her late night feed. Never again!

      There's another sleep regression phase around 8-9 months. My daughter is 8 months too and she's going through the same. It's connected to their drive to move and crawl. Baby wants to explore the world, but is suddenly starting to realize that this means, it's moving further away from their primary care giver and that's really scary! So, they are actually torn between "I want to crawl/ walk!" and "Help! Mommy or daddy are suddenly so far away!" and they need to process that during their sleep. It's not pleasant for us as parents, but it's absolutely normal and developmentally important!!!

    Hi Emma!
    I have been following you before my daughter's birth..Now that she's been 4 and a half months
    Let me take you a week before I tried to stretchher daytime feed intervals.. So ,she was sleeping 3 times a day 30 to 45 mins naps but I used to feed her in every 2 hours or sometimes 1 and a half hour.during the day. 10 min feed from one breast only and for the next feed ,the other breast after every 2 to 2.5 hours. used to sleep through the night.
    A week ago, I tried to stretch the time between feeds.Since then, she hasn't been sleeping through the night and wakes up for feed, even if I have fed her at 12am.. :(
    She is now taking 6 min feed at every hour and then she asks for another one after 3 hours almost, which I try to stretch to make it 4.
    What do I do,I am not used to waking up at nights :( as she has been a good sleeper since the beginning.

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  Před 11 měsíci +3

      Glad the video was helpful.
      In regards to swaddling. It really depends. You want to stop swaddling when your baby is showing early signs that they are getting close to rolling over. The concern is that if they do roll over when swaddled they would not be able to use their hands to clear their face and could suffocate. So it is best to transition out of a swaddle when they are showing you that they are close to rolling over. If they have rolled you will have to go to having both arms out ASAP.

The first 5-6 hours he sleep and then he wakes up for feed and eats it is a true feed dut after he wakes up every 1-2 hours just to feed for 1 min and fall a sleep on me. How i spot this ones?! He does not want petting or something else ,he will cry as a miserabel baby untill i take him .it is like his way or no way and no one will sleep. What i do ?!

    Hi Emma, in relation to tip 2 , does this mean if my 4 month old was only previously waking for 2 night feeds, but is now waking 4-5, I should only feed her for 2 and the extra wake times try to settle her other ways?
    Thanks so much

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  Před rokem

      Hi Elle! Yes, absolutely! If your little one was previously only waking for 2 night feeds but is now waking f4 or 5 times, it is highly likely she is waking at these extra times because she is waking between sleep cycles and needing your help to fall back asleep. And not so much because she is extra hunger. So I would recommend trying to settle her in other ways at these times. Hope this helps.

    I feel like I have been doing all this and no results. I feed my son every 3 hours during day starting at 7am. He never has what the formula said cause he has bad reflux. Previously he would go down at 8 to 830 with a dream feed at 10 and he awoke for a feed at 330 to 4ish then he’d sleep until 630. Naps have been hard for ages. He used to last 20 mins in the bassinet at the start and then I had to contact nap for the rest cause he would cry anytime I put him back down. Now he’s started not sleeping at night and has even been hard to settle in arms. He’s 4 months in just under a week (he also has two bottom teeth that have started to poke through and requires gaviscin for reflux) any other tips?

    Hi Emma,
    My baby is 9 months and is going through a sleep regression, is that normal as well? Can we approach it similarly? Thank you!

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  Před 2 lety +4

      Yes, absolutely. At 9/10 months little ones are more mobile (crawling/learning new skills), are also aware of separation anxiety and in the process of dropping a nap. This can lead to a sleep regression. You can approach the regression using the tips in this video but you just need to adjust the wake times and night feeds to suit a 9 month old. At 9 months your bub might be on a two nap schedule. So generally look for your little ones' tired signs after being awake for around 2 hours in the morning and again after being awake for around 3 hours after the first nap. Some 9 months olds may wake for one feed at night and some might not need a feed.

      Hi @Jay Fo yep another sleep regression is common at 9/10 months of age. This is when little ones tend to be on the move, peak or separation anxiety and they are also dropping a day nap (moving to 2 naps a day). This often results in a sleep regression. I will try and do a video on this topic soon. The tips in this video will help though (just adjust the number of night feeds expected to a 10 month old).

      If the only way your baby goes back to sleep is by a feed, most likely it is because of hunger. • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  Před 2 lety +1

      The 4 months sleep regression which occurs between 3 - 5 months is a sleep progression. Basically your little one's sleep has matured and they now wake or partially wake between sleep cycles. And bubs have multiple sleep cycles per night and during their naps. If it is the 4 months sleep regression this change is permanent. So if your little one is waking between sleep cycles day and night and they need your help to go back to sleep (feed, putting the pacifier back in, rocking etc) then they are going to continue to need that until they learn how to fall asleep independently. In saying that catnaps (short naps during the day) is very normal until around 5/6 months. At this points bubs might start to extend their naps if they are in an environment which is conducive for sleep. Hope that helps a little bit!
