He is right, admitting you are wrong is a very underrated quality, also a sign of a strong personality, not a weak one like many people seem to think.
.....somebody get this over to Hillary Clinton.....stat.
+MarlonBrando, I can't recall any particular cases of that with her. Not sticking up for her, in general, but I think there are better names for that joke (and I don't just mean Donnie).
Guy Incognito when she still blame bernie for her lost almost a year later, i believes she is one of the cases here
I'm disgusted by the fact that he had to be convinced about Bill Cosby, and that it took this long. Clearly Stephen or one of Jerry's people told him during the commercial to walk back his defence in part 1. And he still tried to half defend it. There's no way he hasn't thought about it over the last couple of years. The out of nowhere Bill Clinton comparison bothered me too, it's a trope that shows he's been eating up right wing media.
He also hates college campuses because "they are too PC" to laugh at his anti-gay jokes. Plus he's a total thief, Comedians in Cars is ripped-off from robert llewellyn's web show "carpool" and even that last bit of the interview sounds alot like George Carlin.
I love that you can just tell him a random thing and he can, without missing a beat, find something that's bothering him about it and do a whole routine on it.
"I really like your work, please don’t reveal anything about you!"
Jerry’s face froze for a second there.
Well, he did publicly date an underage girl while he was in his late 30s.
@@ender003 she was 17. This was acceptable back then
@@ender003 Moreover, she was not underage. 17 is legal in the state of NY.
PinkishFloyd 17 is 17. If you need laws to tell you that you shouldn’t date a teenage girl as a grown-ass man, there’s something wrong with you.
@@adrian.m258 ok so an 18 year old dating a 40 year old is fine?
‘Pre-boarding’ was a George Carlin bit.
Love Seinfeld but was interesting to hear him do that bit. I cant imagine he hadnt heard it.
he went full on seinfeld in this interview.
thank you.
ty
ty
He goes full on Seinfeld 24/7 since he is in fact Seinfeld
"and whats the deal with airline food?"
Actually that pre boarding this was George Carlin.
Stephen: That's a good compliment you gave to yourself just now
*the shade is real*
And justified.
@@springboard1994 No it isn't. Your a talk show host... no one cares about your political opinion. Jerry was simply stating that he's able to separate the body of work from the individual. You can say OJ is a murderer and a bad guy all you want... that doesn't mean he didn't run for 2,000 yards in 73'. One of only 6 people to ever accomplish such a feat. The body of work and the individual are separate.
@@nickthekid9868 I meant calling Jerry out for praising himself for admitting he was wrong was justified.. 😃
No it's not
Seinfeld sounded like Trump when he said, "You never see that". ugh
Jerry: "Give me an area."
Stephen: *Looks down at page for preplanned topics* "How about phone calls Jerry."
Jerry: *Gives standup routine on phone calls.*
preplanned, you said?
Yeah and he pretended that he was checking his hands or nails.
We are all treated like idiots.
Lmao right
oh, and wrestling isn't real
I know. This show isn’t even filmed at night time either.
That “pre” bit is George Carlin I think
It is, 100%
two in the mouth, son. *pop pop*
Yep
Every time I pre heat the oven I think I’m not preheating it just heating it
@@Kellycatss Since it can only exist in a heated/unheated state you are correct. 😉
They should stop giving Stephen cue cards for interviews and just let it flow like this one. It felt like a conversation between two friends, even with a little tense moment within it.
2:13 Give me an area...give you an area? (looks down at cue card)... phones.
everything is pre scripted though
Seinfeld and him are friends, and usually you see him do this with good friends or comedians (quick on their feet). Sometimes he ditches it halfway through the interview and its just free balling it the rest of the way, like that Scarlett Johansson interview.
But most guest, especially some with elitest attitudes or boring personalities can't do that, so cards are necessary.
When Seinfeld was on Seth Meyers' show a while back he talked about how when he goes on talk shows he refuses to do a pre-interview which is where the guest basically tells the host in advance what he wants to talk about or what jokes he wants to tell. His reasoning was that basically, he knows that he can be funny at any time and feels that the host should have to do the work to make the interview entertaining in an organic way. Its why you never see a host with interview cards when Jerry is on because those cards are reminders for the host of what hes supposed to ask the guest based on the pre-interview.
Jama Thaughn I saw that, I loved it
Their conversations seem so natural. I could watch them talk for hours.
Curtis Sam This isn't quite the same, but search for Louis CK Talking Funny. It's Seinfeld, Louis CK, Chris Rock and Ricky Gervais sitting around talking about comedy. Worth checking out.
would you also listen while you watched?
@@smithsmith9379 Did he do the whistle?
I love how Jerry is so committed to the comedy in the situation. At 1:30 he brought up how nobody ever changes their opinions but Stephen was moving on already. Jerry wouldn’t let it go.
3:04 LOL I just got flashbacks to that one episode of Seinfeld where everyone says HELLLOOOOOO LA LA LAAAA
I'm as slippery as an eel!
He's now doing a sit-down as opposed to a stand-up. You gotta love Jerry Seinfeld.
better for the knees
This is one of the few insightful and meaningful talk show interviews in recent years
No. I did. He's not funny now.
All he does is complain
@@100cvcv8 Exactly!
I see Jerry spoke with his PR manager during commercial break to cover up the Cosby defense. lmao
lol so fuckin obvious. "should we separate it stephen?" lol like what an asshole. and then complimenting himself. so awkward dude
I could see that happening
The guy blow a few cases of 'college campus censoring' out of proportion while being silent as fuck towards the rise of Rightwing domestic terrorism, so yeah, he can die on that cliff if he wants.
There is so much good in these 8 small minutes!
From changing your mind AND ADMITTING IT to being able to not only play Jerry's game, but KEEP UP WITH HIM! 👏👏👏
I love how real and honest Jerry is.
They seem like they really enjoy each other's company.
I don't think Colbert likes Jerry
It's rare if sienfeld, normally he gives the host a hard time.
And vis versa
They actually get along quite well. The episode where Stephen was on Comedians in Cars was actually quite fun. As was this interview. Let's not start unnecessary fires now.
Not sure if enjoy is the right word here. Still I notice some weird sort of chemistry btween the two ... yes.
It's weird how Seinfeld seems less observational and more cranky in his old age. I think it's the same type of material, but his age has turned it from "Isn't it funny how we..." to "I've had it with you morons"
I just think this culture of having to be politically correct has destroyed comedy and worn him down
George Carlin was the same
'Reaaaaally' you don't think he was cranky before? "Are yooou serious?" "You have GOT to be kidding me?" "No soup for you" Heellooooo Jaaaz Galaxy.
Seinfield was so rude that he made Stephen look like the nicest guy on earth. I wanna punch that stupid face.
So you never watched Seinfeld?
It looks like , at the break, Jerry notice that he would be in danger if people think that he think it's okay to still enjoying bill Cosby comedy hahahah
Exactly what I was thinking!
Yes! I'm sure his agent or someone called during the break to say "What did you just say?! Reverse course now! "
Yup!
I thought the same. Publicist intervened.
In danger of what exactly?
Jerry: "Should his work stand alone from his criminality?"
Audience: *gasp* did he just...
I could watch hours of Jerry talking. He is just so present in each moment. Doesn't take any BS.
This interview was A+. More long-form interviews like this one, please!
Hey....the pre-board thing...that’s CARLIN!!!
I've loved his takes on phone calls. He'd use those bits in his show. They were always one of my favorite inputs of reality commentary.
I love how sharp Stephen is. Even Jerry is impressed
This sounds like a clean George Carlin bit
I came to say the same thing
Came here to say about preboarding and thanks for reminding me where I heard that joke before. Now off to rewatch some unclean uncle George.
Pre-boarding actually was a Carlin joke back in the 90's
I feel the pre-boarding bit was scripted into this interview. I think it was meant to set up the pre-taping this interview bit.
Carlin was a literary genius. Seinfeld is just a washed up one trick pony
A great look into the creativity of making a simple idea into 1 of the most successful shows of all time! I imagine these are the conversations Larry and Jerry would have on a daily basis!
This is great. Love how they play off each other. Great performers!
it might not be as funny but it's interesting because this is just two guys having a conversation
it's probably not funny at all to young people. But if you grew up before texting was a thing this could be hilarious
I thought it was great. I'd be a happy camper if he had Seinfeld on every night.
Stephen should've closed out by calling the special "Jerry Pre Seinfeld"
Yes !!!!!!!!! hhh
NeonSound SHIT THAT'S GOOD
Tombo. We get the jokes that existed. This is about one that didn't exist.
“I wrote that when I was in college ;)”Colbert can be a fucking genius sometimes, it was Ana awesome way of telling him he is on to him
I agree ...Colbert was on fire here, like Jerry said too
right at the end, Stephen: "I wrote that one in college" - pure gold 😂
That was definitely good. He was acting like a dick though
Cosby's jokes rested on the audience's favorable view of him as a personable figure; in all his jokes he presented himself as the protagonist and as a respectable person; his jokes rested on his ability to get his audience to identify with him as 'the common man', and a family man. All of the humor of his jokes rested on the supposition that he was obviously an honorable man to society- but here, all these strange things were happening to him- and thus, humor resulted not from his jokes, per say, but from the audience's assumption of his respectable personality.
applause!!!
Well argued point with well-constructed arguments.
Giddy up!
murderdeathkillr he’s talking about Cosby’s standup.
THE Rattler stop calling criminals monsters, I’m sick of it! They are still human too! Their acts are heinous, but don’t strip their humanity.
"What does pre-board mean? To get on before you get on" - George Carlin
"Pre suck my genital situation!" - George Carlin
Naved Ahmed yep. Direct lift from Carlin.
Shhh, he did it like 20 years ago, maybe nobody remembers... Oh wait.
Telling that joke clean takes talent.
Naved Ahmed - Jerry doesn't need to lift anyone's material. The thing is, eventually great minds think alike. Who can remember every joke or rift of every comedian who ever lived? Cut Seinfeld a break. He's a comedian's comedian. He would call himself out of he found out the "pre-boarding" bit was Carlin's and then make a joke about the joke!
Seinfeld has a comic ability through conversation that is rarley seen.a true legend of the art form
That phone bit was SO Seinfeld the show. I could picture the whole conversation between Jerry and George.
Colbert out-Seinfelded Seinfeld there at the end. How does that work? 😱
Whaaaat's the deal?
The student becomes the master.
Very much so. He did miss out on a Seinfeld before Seinfeld / preexisting condition equivalence joke though.
Yeah, Colbert's pre-taping joke was great, but even better was how after Jerry tipped his hat, Colbert one-upped it by saying "I wrote that in college," referencing Jerry's new show. That was smooth.
You mean he out Carlin'd Seinfeld: czcams.com/video/wBo3-XnhXNM/video.html
Both the pre-board and pre-record touched on here. I wonder if either of them knew they were doing a Carlin bit.
Love Jerry. I think I have watched every Seinfeld episode over 100 times
me too
Ok. Go to bed now.
That would be 53 straight weeks of watching Seinfeld.
Nathan Dehnel LoL Well, 10 years ago I had no cable and all the seasons on DVD. So, I watched it a lot :)
I think that might be a slight exaggeration there.
It's great to see someone who can keep up with how quick and witty Jerry is!
That "Pre" bit (Pre-boarding an airplane and pre existing conditions) that Jerry did was directly (probably unintentionally) ripped from George Carlin's material.
i was looking for this comment
For anyone questioning it... czcams.com/video/wBo3-XnhXNM/video.html
Well, let me tell you this: you guys are lucky to have this actual quality of TV.
I'm french and I watch Colbert quite regiously. I've never seen that on french TV : just 2 extraordinary funny guys sitting at a desk, talking casual-philosohy for 17 minutes. Nothing more needed. No tons of cut and edit, no need for extra-bullshit cameos, appearances, effects of any kind, 2min fun clips for you not to fall asleep crap, etc. This is just great TV.
Le Dru They actually end up cutting a lot of the interviews out. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the interviews went on for twice as long as what we see. They're just really good at making the editing seemless.
Julian, I think he or she is referencing the style in which their TV shows are constructed, not the actual editing to CZcams or cutting/editing down a few little snippets to make time. If you watch some of the foreign shows they're very... distracting and annoying? In my personal view/opinion.
These interviews are practiced before hand. That is why they come out so well.
Le Dru but its yours too. Its on youtube.
This isn't indicative of most American TV, barely resembles Colbert's usually stuff
This may be one of the best interviews I've ever seen.
its because they didnt talk about trump
smcg hey guess what? Nobody cares that you’re republican.
Raxus Prime im not. I dont even live in the USA. just sick of trump "jokes"
I'm sick of the biggest Trump joke of them all: Trump. And I'm not even American either.
then you need to see more interviews.
Ugh this brings back such warm memories. Growing up watching these guys was the best. I love you Jerry Seinfeld. You guys are hysterical 🤣🤣🤣 I loved this bit 🙌🙌💜💜
That's a Carlin joke! "How do you get on the plane without boarding it!"
loved that phone bit, had me cracking up. classic seinfeld.
In all fairness: I think *Seinfeld more than deserves his self-compliment!* Because he's absolutely right: you rarely see someone change his/her opinion (not only on TV!)
The reason is that it's very hard to change your opinion: from a psychological standpoint, it's actually *one of the hardest things to do!* So kudos Jerry, and cheers :)
PS: And I don't even like Seinfeld (as a comedian as well as personally)... maybe I'll have to change my opinion too... ;)
MrNodebate; Al he did was say, on national tv, that he had changed his mind. AND pointed out that few people do what he'd just done. Seriously? Don't get me wrong. LOVED the Seinfeld program, but geez, Seinfeld is really playing us for fools if he thinks we really think he changed his mind. And, btw, I think it depends on the person---and the person who allegedly committed a crime, etc.---re how we then think about that person. Would be nice if there were actually 'rules", but there are not.
Yea. Shows the influence of poisonous PC/liberalism. He changed it from a reasonable perspective to a crowd-pleasing, braindead perspective.
@@c.a.g.3130 I disagree. Seinfeld has long said Cosby was one of his all time favourite comedians. If he goes back and listens to his old records, what Cosby did is either not going to effect his perception of Cosbys humour, or it's going to make him just feel downright awkward because he can never look at the man in the same light, with the same respect he once held knowing what he now knows. I grew up loving Bill Cosby. All his shows like The Cosby Show, Cosby Mysteries and Cosby were all on in our house. I don't know how I'd feel watching those again though. Who knows?
@@casmo87 Well, you'll find out when you go watch him again. Personally, I was never a Cosby fan (thought he was OK) but my friends loved him. I was more along the lines of Abbott & Costello. Cosby was more observational of human foibles than language incongruities. I preferred attention on the latter. But I still recognize his genius and that doesn't change because of his personal shortcomings. Half the great films of the last 25 years were produced by Harvey Weinstein; do you not watch them because he was a creep? Also, note that Jerry does not do colleges any more. He simply does not want to deal with their PC BS. He could just face them down but he's not that kind of guy. As a Long Islander, it seems the same way here; he doesn't want to fight with a knucklehead like Colbert (who is not even in his league).
You need a secure person in the seat, people were made to be neurotic
I'm exactly the same way about the phone. "Get your stuff together, caller!"
Such a rich, fun and entertaining conversation about trivial stuff. Only two geniuses could do it.
I could watch this go on for hours and i feel like it easily would
that pre stuff is george carlin's
sure, but technically any joke that isnt current events related can be traced back to carlin, rickles, pryor, or cosby
Yes. I think Steven realized midway and played with it by continuing it.
Prem Chand almost note for note czcams.com/video/vdPy5Ikn7dw/video.html
George carlin doesn't care, because he dead.
Yup, you beat me to it. He's pulling a Mensia, but he's not even making it better than Carlin
Did Jerry seriously just steal Carlin’s Pre-Boarding bit lmao
Jerry's been doing it for 30 years.
Yeah he did
I like the idea that once Carlin thought it, nobody else can have the same thought.
So nobody who thinks anything owns the thought, then? SMH
KingCeryn I think the point is Carlin had the same bit about getting on the plane before you get on the plane, he didn’t think it, he said it, in his bit
Kyle Gammon right, but I’ve said the exact same thing and I’m not a comedian.
I also haven’t seen every George Carlin bit.
So...am I stealing his bit, or did I just have the same thought?
"We're pre-taping this show." "Whoa !!" :D
either it's a disaster or a blessing when two great comedians meet. there's nothing in between
This was the first time I've ever seen a good Seinfeld late night talk show interview. growing up and seeing him on Leno it always felt like he was forcing himself or phoning it in. I hope he becomes a regular on Colbert
I know jerry isn’t aware, but The whole “ pre boarding” bit is George Carlin’s material.
This has got to be the FUNNIEST interaction with a guest I have observed. Delightful!!
The whole pre-boarding (pre) bit, is a George Carlin bit.
Boisey right, do you think he stole it?
Been scrolling through these comments and I have one ask: "How 'bout one more of you geniuses tell the world that the "pre" jokes were George Carlin's. Thanks.

Going back to the ghost dots when texting, the worst is if someone mistakenly hit a single letter and it appears as though someone is sending you a message when in reality the conversation is done and you're still expecting someone to message you.
The "hello" bit was the funniest thing I have heard in a week lol!!
That bit about pre-boarding a plane is taken from George Carlin...
Avoids Bill Clinton comparison, "he was never that funny to me." Lol
I bet Kathleen Willey thought he was a riot.
Seinfeld is the king of comedy still. Wow. An amazing show.
7:14 - "this was pre-taped, when else you going to tape it after wards? the whole purpose of taping is to do it before."
I'm really liking the "It's ok for not everything to be applauded or laughed at" vibe.
It's starting to feel like this Late Show could be special.
Great talk! I'm glad Seinfeld changed his mind like that, it IS unusual to to that publicly and I loved that Stephen called him out for patting himself on the back. Great commentary and great meta-communication. But one thing bothered me: Didn't George Carlin do that pre-boarding-joke?
I love when people say gotta go on text because I know that the phone goes with them wherever they go
Love Jerry's saying "it would be like if your phone instead of ringing just went Ruh", ....Hilarious!
That pre-board joke is a Carlin joke
sadly yes..but I dont think he did it intentionally... the last time he mustve heard it mustve been back in the 80's and it's normal for our brains to resurface distant memories as new thoughts..

Watching Jerry and Stephen wasp it out was amazing. I want more of this.
I would absolutely love to have a conversation like what they just had. No joke.
But the jokes are the best part! hehe ;)
are there any more interviews where colbert talks to them like this? this was amazingly good
He can only talk like this to people when it's agreed upon beforehand because most guests can't handle being made to think too much on the spot. That being said, I'm sure this was rehearsed.
When Jerry talked about "pre-boarding" he started it out like George Carlin's joke about it, but changed it up, made it his own version. It made me smile at it. I think it was an homage to a great stand-up comedian, and I loved it.
yes it was definitely pretold by Carlin.
Jerry is so good a truly brilliant comic!...I saw one of his first appearances he was very polished and professional from the very start!!
Hahahaha Jerry Seinfeld realized he was going to get trashed for his Bill Cosby comment and had to walk it back mid-interview
You really think Jerry Seinfeld cares?

Watching these two great comedic minds “sparring” is entertainment at its best! Love Colbert & Seinfeld so much! I can go to sleep now in perfect peace.
❤ his grandiosity is not Stopping him from thinking. 😂 überheblich as fuck ! I love him!
Pre-Boarding & use of prefixes is a straight lift of a George Carlin bit...
I appreciate Jerry being able to want to differentiate between something that someone has done in their life, and the comedic work one has done. One mistake as opposed to an ongoing trend of deliberately hurting others would be a differenciation as well.
I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Welcome back Jerry!
The phone thing I can relate to. For me, I hate when people call you and ask "who's this?" I don't know, who did you call?
THE PHONE RANT IS AS ABSOLUTELY TRUE AS BRILLIANT LMFAO
On his show Jerry tells other comedians "Im gonna use that" when they tell a funny joke and they dont believe him lol...i imagine he may have telephoned Carlins ghost for that one ...
Stephen is so much funnier when he's natural and having a conversation compared to the political stuff.
I think this is the best Colbert interview. So funny
I have watched Jerry Seinfeld on many shows and when he doesn't respect the body of work of the host he usually just commanders the show and ends up doing everything. But Stephen Colbert holds his own and even adds to the whole pre bit by doing the pre taping bit and Jerry actually respects him. This was great.
5:30 to 6:00 He lifted that material directly from George Carlin.
Was about to say. Totally surprised to see Seinfeld having to "borrow" from other standups. You'd think he had enough of his own material to use.
@@chipcasino6176 sadly yes..but I dont think he did it intentionally... the last time he mustve heard it mustve been back in the 80's and it's normal for our brains to resurface distant memories as new thoughts..
It's just the premise that he copied, the jokes he made off the back of it were his. Also, I don't think he would've used the premise if he'd known.
He was not doing stand up, he was having a conversation. He respects Carlin and brought up the observations here because it was relevant. It would be different if he was using Carlin's material in his act.
Pre-boarding a plane!? That's a George Carlin joke! So is getting on a plane or getting IN a plane!
Very few people can keep up with Jerry, but Colbert just topped the one of the best wordsmiths ever. Well done sir.
This cosby moment between these 2 is great!
Hey, the pre boarding bit almost felt like it was going to be Carlin's bit.
because it is a carlin bit :D
@@NeroVuk Yeah, but not quite. That's what I mean.
yeah im sure Carlin isnt the only one to find the term pre-bording funny
I agree with Seinfeld about telephone courtesies. When I get a call, I answer "Yes". if they ask me "Is this Mr. So-and So?" I immediately command them to identify themselves. If they fail to do, I hang up and use the "Root Call Blocker Pro" Android app to never hear from that number again ... they had their one chance that I allow.
Colbert being the more educated one knew exactly why the term 'prehistoric' is used ie 'historic' period is the span of time where events were written down, 'prehistoric' being the time span beforehand; I guess he read 'How to Win Friends and Influence People'.
This is an awesome interview
Jerry stole the pre-boarding and pre-existing condition jokes from George Carlin!
Jawahar Hingorani he sure did!
That preboarding riff is a Carlin bit.
lol he nailed the phone hello thing haha. So true
Jerry.... you are still the best! Thank you for being you! The best comedian of all time. Xo
That whole 'pre-' bit was lifted from George Carlin 🙄
Lifted? Are you dumb?
Finally somebody noticed
Not sure about that. Jerry is a writer. They both do these types of jokes. Jerry is well established.
Jerry Seinfeld is a smug prick, just watch his interview with Larry King. Watch how Jerry responds to Larry King about the way Seinfeld went off the air. Also I think the show's success is due to LARRY DAVID'S excellent comedic writing skills not Jerry's, it's obvious that he road L. David's coat tails in that regard. Let's not forget (how could we) Jerry's crappy acting. Oh & he has not done one good TV show or Movie since, coincidence i think not.
lol
