This happened on my 2014 b8.5 a5 black edition. driver side window regulator fail, started with a crunching noise and a bang. I had to tape up the window like yourself. Part was around £170 ($216 us) genuine oem. On mine the wire was all crunched and tangled inside the mechanism. Changed the regulator myself, about an hour job if you’ve done it before 2/3 hours if your completely new to it. Surprised they haven’t fixed this common issue on the newer models.
@@AutoAndrew Just being real as someone who worked in dealership parts/service for a decade, little BS issues seem to be the norm now. Even with Honda who I worked for for a decade. I just traded my Lexus in for a B9.5 because the Lexus needed a new front differential & seat belt at 65K miles, and had a electrical nightmare that the dealer could not solve with 13Hrs of labor, and no one else wanting to touch it.
Interesting - I had heard of a separate TSB being issued (this one static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2021/MC-10204730-0001.pdf) for the pinch protection being too sensitive and requiring a software update/adaptation, but hadn't heard of one for the regulator itself. Glad it didn't happen in the middle of a downpour 😅
Interesting! For the past few months, the window would ever so often roll down when I pulled the switch up - causing me to have to pull the switch again to get it to roll up fully. I honestly thought it was something similar to what you mentioned (i.e. the window being sensitive) and mostly ignored it until it finally broke 😰

I had the exact same problem with my audi as well so basically the window lifter broke
I have a B9 S5 SB, and and not all the windows go down the same amount when you open/close the doors.
Damn bro. Time to go back to BMW 😢
Maybe I’ll have to try another German brand 😎
