    Great footage but hardly a "monster storm".
    I have been on a large cruise ship crossing the Atlantic when the waves were almost as high as the ship itself!
    You couldn't see the horizon at all. Only mountains of water around you!
    Not allowed to be outside on the decks at all. It lasted several hours and most people decided to go to their cabins and sleep it off.

    We were on a relatively small cruise ship three years ago in the Caribbean just after a bad hurricane. It was a horrible experience. At one point we were thrown out of bed when a huge wave hit us. I was sick for 3 days out of the 6. It’s no joke.

    I happened to go on a 24 hour cruise onboard a Viking Line's Amorella estimated 30 000 tonnes, so not much larger than this "big cruise", which would be categorized as a tiny ship compared to most cruise lines fleet and certainly to the one I'm a member of (RCCL), and it just so turned out to be what the paper's called the worst storm of the year on the Baltic Sea (this was during december). This same night as my ship crossed it, one ship sunk and another had a mayday call, information that luckuly didn't reach us until the following morning. We couldn't have been to far from each other since the baltic sea can't be more than perhaps 1/5 the size of the mediterranean sea. A lot of sick people that night. I wounder how it would have felt onboard, had it been a Freedom or Oasis class ship, they at least have stabilizers and are 5-7 times heavier. I would have felt a lot more safe no matter what

    People who have never been to sea probably don’t understand how film, whether video or photographs, can’t nearly capture the true height and severity of a sea. Whatever the film shows, in person it looks at least 1/3 to 1/2 more severe.....

    • @TrollMeister_
      @TrollMeister_ Před 2 lety +1

      Actually it can, if you are using the right lenses. Most amateur video is taken with small sensor cameras (phones, go pro's, etc) and use very wide angle lenses which makes things look much smaller and distant than they are. To capture realistic footage you would need longer (and heavier) lenses on full frame camera (dslr or mirrorless) bodies. Most amateurs aren't that committed.

    I remember a ferry crossing out to Shetland years back. I'm fairly used to sea crossings and have been out on deck many times in conditions like this. Im ex-navy too. But my fiancé at the time spend months worrying about how scary the crossing was going to be. We had bought some craft work stuff in Aberdeen for him to do while on holiday. Now once we'd left the Pentland Firth a storm brewed up and i was out of the cabin leaving him to do his craft stuff. I made friends with locals who did the journey many times. We all started to get worried and even the steward in the bar received a phone call to remove all the glassware and our whisky bottle had to be decanted into plastic cups. Captain put out regular messages to be alert and ready. Ships smashed about. I checked on my fiancé and he was asleep. The next morning the captain woke us up to get ready for breakfast before departing saying Breakfast was on him because of the storm we had experienced. My fiancé just said "what happened?"

    They also specialize in polar cruising and expedition ships that often have double hull and other measures to ensure safety even in rougher weather the this.
    The ship designs themselves are also better suited for bad weather then the typically boxy designs you find in modern cruise lines.

    Great video. However, to me it’s just another day at the office. I work offshore on platforms, gravity based structures, and Floating Production Storage Offloading (FPSO). Sometimes we would need the extra space for crew, which required the rental of floating hotels or cruise ships. Believe me when I say that working cruise ships aren’t the same as actually taking a cruise. Basically it’s just a place to sleep next to another guy who you might even not know. The food is low grade and just edible. When the seas start acting up, it’s time to drop your tools and head for your cruise ship. They can’t risk you getting caught on a facility without a rack. It’s about safety and the number of people aboard (POB). So, if it’s time to go, it’s about weather. This video is tame compared to what I have seen. On the Nord Norge we crashed into 60+ ft. swells shaking the ship. Imagine eating lunch shooting up and back down 30 feet. You get use to it after awhile. When it’s really bad we head for a calm port. Unfortunately in port we can’t get off the ship. Working offshore sounds hard and it is. It also pays every well, which is why we tolerate the hardships.

    I served on an aircraft carrier. We were on our way back to the US from Vietnam in 1966. We ran into a typhoon between Japan and Midway Island. We had 150 MPH winds with 80 foot sesa
    It was 90 foot from the flight deck to water. The waves were coming over the flight deck. Waves went has high as the bridge on the 011 deck. When the ship went over a wave the screws were coming out of the water. We could only do seven knots. That was just enough to steer the sea.

    It's not a monster storm. I've been on over 30 cruises and one cruise was on the Azure Seas where we encountered 120 knot winds and waves up to 80 feet. One went over the entire front of the ship. I was outside on the second to the uppermost deck and the water pinned me against one of the steel railings. I thought I was actually under water. My ribs were sore for a couple of weeks after that.
    I would pay good money to experience that night again!!!
