Miss World vs. Miss Universe: A Quick History (Part 1 of 3) TPN#7

  • They’re the two longest-running and most well-known international beauty pageants around. Both nearing their 70th anniversaries, they have enough history and drama to fill more than one of my videos. Heck, I’m going to do three!
    Miss World. Miss Universe. One of them may well be your favourite pageant. I’m not going to convince you one way or another - I’m just going to give you my usual nerdy take on them!
    Part 1 of this series looks at the history of both pageants overall - their humble beginnings, growth in contestants and where they’ve been hosted over the years.
    Parts 2 and 3 will look at the most successful nations and individual contestants in both pageants. Enjoy!

    Miss world is more dignified and inclusive to all cultures and types of beauty . Miss Universe is a Hollywood style beauty television show where the delegates are part of the entertainment. The Delegates in Miss World are true beauty . Miss Universe is about a particular look for the time and is more of a modelling contest .

    I love Miss World, I love how they select the semi finalists with fast track events which represent other forms of beauty. The hard part with Miss World is to follow the competition cause there are so many events before the final night.

    Only two pageant I believe the most.. also most unique pageant as well.
    Miss universe opening statement, top 5 q&a, same question in top 3 & closing statement; made sure that the crowned miss universe is a refined speaker 😍😍😍
    Miss world’s fast track, head to head & beauty with the purpose also what I love the most. However I still love the pointing system like 2003. Then only top 10 were called as finalists because top 40 is so annoying.

    • @PageantNerd
      @PageantNerd  Před 3 lety

      There are definitely strong points of both formats. I do, however, struggle to understand in Miss World the point of announcing one cut and then five minutes later doing another cut, without any competition in between. It makes it feel like the whole thing has been predetermined. I suppose that’s the main different between the two - MU is a finals night competition, while MW is more a judgement of the entire pageant.

    I’ve read that MU intentionally limits their delegates to less than 90 (during Trump Era) because of the allotted time for the broadcast of the coronation night. But since IMG took over, they are not as strict as before. I guess just as long as the countries/franchisees are able to pay the fees on time.

    • @PageantNerd
      @PageantNerd  Před 4 lety +1

      That would make a lot of sense - it didn’t really occur to me it would be a Trump era/post Trump era thing! Making the broadcast too long and tiresome wouldn’t be appealing to NBC. IMG would definitely be more revenue focused - I think their rather cost-saving pageant in Atlanta proved that!

  • @joselgarlitos236
    @joselgarlitos236 Před 4 lety +6

    another great video Pageant Nerd! interestingly and perhaps a coincidence, both peak years was won by the Philippines. also, ive been thinking that Miss World is much popular in the African continent, hence more delegates from there? i think there are more networks broadcasting Ms World in Africa and Europe and the Caribbean hence the more candidates from those continents? also, there are countries in Ms World that are somewhat duplicates ( in early Miss Universe too) like Scotland, UK, Jersey? (in 80 and 81) , Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland.

    • @PageantNerd
      @PageantNerd  Před 4 lety +2

      Thank you, Josel! Yes, Miss World has definitely made more of an effort to appeal to certain continents in a way that Miss Universe maybe hasn’t. The way they structure their placements - in recent years reserving a place in the Top 5 for one delegate from each of the designated regions - also gives exposure to a more diverse group of contestants. I don’t think there’s necessarily one right way of arranging an international pageant - after all so many people are against the regional breakdown at Miss Universe. I guess that’s what makes it so interesting for us pageant fans to debate over all the differences! Thanks for leaving your comment! ☺️

    For miss world! I love the fast track (talent, social media, sports & top model), head to head & beauty with the purpose round. However the top 40 is so annoying! Better if they follow the old format which is the selection of the top 10 or better to chose top 3 for every regions, like 3 from Asia & oceana 3 from Africa, 3 from Caribbean, 3 from America, 3 from Europe. Then awarding of winner & continental winners as well.

      Hi there, as I mentioned in a response to a similar comment, I’m certainly not intending to offend or exclude everyone. However, the definition of “person of colour” has evolved over the years to include more minorities. My point was that darker skinned women, i.e. those of African and South Asian origins, waited much longer for recognition. It’s wonderful that women from East Asian and Latin women were rewarded from the 1950s onwards.

    • @PageantNerd
      @PageantNerd  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for your comment! The definition of “person of colour” has most definitely evolved over the years, and it now can include people of East Asian origin. My point - without trying to exclude or offend anyone - was to highlight the fact that when Janelle won the 1977 crown, its significance was noted as no other black person had won Miss Universe to that point... it’s a sentiment that she echoed in the clip I did on MU’s biggest surprise victories.

      Haha I appreciate your honesty, and I’m glad I managed to keep you entertained, despite the subject matter! I agree it was getting pretty nerdy and fact-driven, so I’m grateful you stuck at it! It’s a fine line between being interesting and digging too deep into facts and figures, I’m aware of that! Thanks for the observations re Catriona - I’m yet to fully research that clip on crossovers, so I’ll be sure to address those points. You may have seen I did a clip on her BBP journey, but less so on MWP - there’s always more to explore! Thanks again for the feedback. All the best to you! 😎😊

      Yes, I have to admit I really enjoy the competitive elements of the Miss Universe finals telecast. I suppose Miss World has the majority of their “competition” before finals night, and the telecast itself is more of a celebration. I’m growing to appreciate it a bit more, but MU continues to be my favourite. Love to the Philippines! 🇵🇭

    So East Asian is now not considered a person of color?... 4 East Asians won Miss Universe before Janelle in 1977. I just need to ask...

    • @PageantNerd
      @PageantNerd  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi there, thanks for leaving your question. It certainly wasn’t my intention to exclude or offend with that observation. I know there has been conjecture over defining the term “people of colour” - I’m also of East Asian heritage. East Asian contestants were indeed successful at Miss Universe earlier on, with Akiko Kojima leading the way in 1959 and Apasra Hongsakula, Gloria Diaz and Margarita Moran following. But it took much longer for black and brown women to experience success in that competition, as it was at Miss USA.
