  • One of the most common questions we get at scribemedia.com is: “How do I get my book on a bestseller list?” Our standard answer: “You’d be better off by totally ignoring them.”
We encourage our authors not to chase bestseller lists, but instead focus on the business and personal goals for their book. This confuses them initially (Having a bestselling book doesn’t get me more business?), but once we explain the process and tradeoffs to them, the overwhelming majority discard it and focus more on the goals that are far more impactful to them.
In this video, 4-time #1 New York Times bestselling author, Tucker Max, will cover everything you need to know about bestseller lists.

How did Goggins make it if he was self published?

3 times more than if he’d gone with a traditional publisher :)

@@ScribeBookSchool sorry, Tucker said that you need a traditional publishing deal to make it onto the NYT list but of course people like Goggins and Haddish were self published. How did they make it if they weren't with a traditional publisher? Did NYT just pick them for cultural relevance x sales?

Ah, my apologies- I misread your original question. Yes, I believe it was picked up due to massive sales AND he had distribution in relevant book stores due to demand. Most self published books simply can’t get that level of distribution outside of online sales.
