In each version, we show a full level and a few seconds of gameplay with the double ship (sometimes in the Challenging Stage).
In this video, we show the evolution of Galaga over the years through its many ports.
Which are your favorite Galaga ports?
Some versions that were later included in compilations for the same systems and have been excluded. For example, the Game Boy port was re-released Game Boy Namco Gallery Vol. 1 and the Xbox 360 port in Namco Museum Virtual Arcade.
The Version Comparison series only shows licensed ports of the games, so don't expect to see any clones, homebrews or hacks (although we could add it from time to time if we see fit). Anyway, if you like the video, we can make a separate one dedicated to unofficial versions in the future for our Clones Comparison series. If you know of any, don't hesitate to post it in the comments.

I never knew you could increase your firepower by letting your first fighter get captured and rescuing it with your second fighter! That's such a bold and clever tactic, and it makes the game so much easier! I love the tune that plays in a minor key when a fighter gets captured and in a major key when it's rescued! For a game that doesn't have much music, that's a surprisingly powerful way to express a potentially dire moment followed by an absolutely glorious one.
I always thought that the fanfare that played at the start of the game sounded incomplete as it abruptly cuts off when the first level starts.
I'm fairly certain that the Sharp MZ-2500 version was made in 1985 since it's virtually identical to the Sharp X1 version. I've noticed a pattern whereby certain Sharp ports of games were made in the same year. Similar story with some old NEC ports of games.
I'm a little bit disappointed that Cosmo Gang: The Video wasn't included among the bonus footage at the end as it's essentially a cutesy parody of Galaga like Parodius is to Gradius, but that's no big loss.

    • @SobiTheRobot
      @SobiTheRobot Před 2 lety +4

You didn't know about the double starships? I'm honestly shocked, that's one of Galaga's defining game mechanics, one the game doesn't explicitly tell you about but players are sure to find out by accident.
      I'm just flabbergasted...then again maybe I'm just older, but I'm only 27.

I always viewed the Atari 7800 as a graphical enigma because it wasn't technically the first home videogame console. The horrid graphics and sound it displayed seemingly lent itself to being an affordable option for people who needed something they could buy for their kid that wasn't close to $1K. But I still find it insane that at one point, Atari was the best you could get at home out of the many other options that probably looked, sounded, played better and overall felt closer to the same arcade experience that consoles like the NES would do in 1985

Galaga was (sadly) never released for my TI-99/4A, but the MSX provides an approximation of what it might have looked like. (same with the ColecoVision not featured here). Single-coloured sprites just don't cut it for Galaxian though, and the 1981 TMS9918A would need a modern upgrade to deal with more than 4 sprites per scanline (each colour being a separate sprite, so all 28 sprites would be used up pretty quickly)...even swapping them with bitmap graphics, one is still restricted to two colours per 8x8 grid. It could be done with careful planning, but the memory overhead would be considerable.
The considerable talents of the 21st century TI homebrew scene might pull it off someday I hope. It is one of the few remaining "A" list titles missing from the system and a personal favourite.
Anyway, I'm rabbling, good video, lots of variety, thanks.

On Jakks Pacific, it will show the millionth digit if you reach 1 million points and reaching stage 256 resets the system.

In arcade version if you play with easy and hard difficulty the game reset the system mean if you play in normal and hardest difficulty the games continues and stage 256 is like a bonus/challenging stage

Strange. i was looking for the version i played on arcade machines in my childhood in austria (about 1990-1995), but it wasnt one of these. it was somewhat more graphically advanced, but i still think it was definetly galaga - those were midway arcade machines..
