  • I finally got a chance to shoot a short basement video of my newest guitar: an older Squier J. Mascis Jazzmaster with tons of upgrades, including Fender Pure Vintage 65 pickups. (Thanks, Evan! I love it so much!)
I'm dreaming of a 65 Princeton Reverb Reissue (with 12") right now and have devoted many hours to watching demos of the various models available (knotty pine, bordeaux, GC tweed, Sweetwater tweed, etc.). While doing so, I watched a video of Jim Campilongo (how had I never heard of this dude?!?!?) playing through a 65 PRRI and talking about his settings: volume and bass at ten, treble at around 7, and reverb at 7, working the volume knob on the guitar. I decided to try the same thing with my early 60s Ampeg Gemini I, adding the amplifier's tremolo. I'm plugged straight into the amplifier's channel one "hi" input, using a Bullet coil cable. The amp is a bit of an anomaly-it has a 15" in it from a Gemini II, I believe.
I play the same chord progression four times, starting with the volume knob at 2 and progressively moving up to 10. At 10, I pick even more lightly, so that you can hear how the amp responds to touch, staying clean and defined. At the same time, you can hear it on the edge of feedback.
I wish this amp weren't so heavy-I'd lug it to solo shows for sure! I've done so before, last in Minneapolis at Palmer's Bar in 2019. It's a trusty beast and I love it.
Being some 60 years old, it does have a bit of a loud noise floor when it's cranked, but I don't mind at all.
Please feel free to leave comments! I love to hear from others.
    Recorded on an iPhone.
