    Finally!!!! This is one of the best songs ever of Hindi cinema. The female singer is Shweta Shetty, a 90s popstar. Now I guess you have two more, one is the mellow soft song and another is the instrumental 'Spirit of Rangeela' one of A.R. Rahman's favourite compositions which he performs in almost every concert. And yes, you two will never be able to get hold of Urmila Matondkar as you keep forgetting her in movies, which means you have to watch her movies. Bhoot, Ek Hasina Thi, Tehzeeb, Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara, Pinjar, Rangeela are some of the best films of her. Please do!

    The female singer is Shweta Shetty (one of the finds of the IndiPop era of the 90s). Her voice and appearance were unusual for Indian showbiz back then so she did not become as big a name as she could have today. Also, she married a German and settled in Germany away from the limelight. This song is one of my favourites not just for the crazy composition but also for the contrasting vocals of Shweta and A R Rahman. Indians are generally used to female vocals being high pitched and male vocals being bass. This duo flipped that notion on its head. Back in the day, most Indians were echoing your sentiment of "I have never heard anything like that before".

So, if you had seen the film you would immediately understand the visuals including flying over NYC... She takes Munna (Aamir Khan) to a movie studio.... And shows him look what is possible here in this place... And so the lyrics goes 'Mangta hai kya... " in Mumbai slang... What do you wish for..."jo mangta hai woh milega tumko"... You can have whatever you wish for here..
    Both in terms of what is possible in the celluloid virtual world..

    Jai Ho (which won him an Oscarl)
    Tanha Tanha from Rangeela (his use of pan flutes unheard in Bollywood music at that time) in fact the entire soundtrack of Rangeela is what every non Indian should listen to (the Rangeela soundtrack won AR Rahman his first Filmfare award as a mainstream Indian music composer, he had already won awards for Roja as a music composer earlier)
    Next: obviously Dil Se. This is probably AR Rahman's best composition. The entire soundtrack is superlative, only matched by what he composed for "slum dog millionaire "
    Credit goes to Urmi (Urmila) + Aamir + Ram Gopal Verma for creating this number when it was way ahead of its time (this was 1995). So you can obviously imagine.

    One of my all-time favourites from AR Rahman. This sounds exceptionally good with headphones on. You will love it!
    And the rendering by female singer "Hema Sardesai" is top notch. Male singer is of course AR Rahman with that signature voice.
    The flashy colored Aamir Khan shirts goes with the storyline of the movie. He is a street guy in this movie, they are known to have wild dressing sense back in 80s and 90s.

  • @RV-ru5kb
    @RV-ru5kb Před 2 lety +7

    The singer is your “Nanban” (pronounced Nun-bun) -Tamil for Dost - AR Rahman who did the male vocals… Shwetha Shetty who was Indipop singer who did the female vocals. Rahman again was not afraid to make non traditional singer choices over the years(Sid Sriram was introduced by ARR to India). This song created quite a riff since nobody had heard anything like it.. the beats were kind of tango -ish and it was very hard to dance to(Indian dance wise). Rahman of the 90’s did music that was 20 year ahead of time.. Remember this is when music was kind of stuck in 70’s / 80’s type of repetitive Indian music - more so in the North..

    BTW, Rangeela, Kaun and Satya were all directed by Ram Gopal Verma. Urmila worked with him on at least half a dozen movies, maybe more. They were like a Scorsese-Leo thing back in the day haha. Verma was a sort of bridge between mainstream Bollywood and more arthouse sensibilities.
    Anurag Kashyap was a writer and assistant director with RGV in his early days.
