I love Soul Asylum. I think Dave is terribly underrated. Definitely one of the best songwriters and lyricists of his era.

Never heard this song until five months ago and quickly learned how to play this song. So many emotions when I hear it.

Soul asylum.. another band of many that rode the wave of alternative and grunge led by Nirvana. As Nirvana left, so did interest in a lot of these bands. Mr Pirner is in my opinion one of the best songwriters ever. Let your dim light shine is so passed over and forgotten it's a shame. Every song on there he's telling a story, about no one yet anyone, and has so many self reflecting lyrics and contradicting meanings. " Saving up for a rainy day, it just rained, yesterday" is one of my fave lines. Too bad the industry moved on and left creative bands like this in the dust. The 90s were awesome and I want to go back. Funny thing is, you can catch a lot of these 90s bands in small venues out touring still today, as they never quit playing. Violent femmes, soul asylum, meat puppets, to name a few are still living from gig to gig like they were before the boom in the early 90s happened. Almost.. like it never happened.

I totally agree about "Let Your Dim Light Shine", that one is a horribly ignored mainstream treasure.

I love the 86-90 period soul asylum the best. I actually thought that stuff was way way ahead of it's time.. the 92-98 stuff was damn good as well. Nirvana liked these guys (and husker and the replacements) too. Kurt says he saw them live and didn't really get it the first time but that he liked the music. He also stated in several interviews about how Minneapolis had a lot of "really good bands"

    • @dmvconartists2542

Gravedancers union one of the top albums of the 90s. Most people only know runaway train and though I never really get tired of hearing it, it's probably the weakest track musically. I wonder if he is even happy knowing that it will be his legacy. It did help a lot of people I suppose but there is so much deeper and introspective music he has created. Met him a few years ago, pretty cool guy.. enjoyed the video it brought back memories thank you

Dave: I'm a huge fan of melodic roots rock and other forms of melodic pop music. My wife and I, over many years, have been deeply moved by these
"Soul Asylum songs: "Runaway Train", of course, and also "Eyes of a Child", "I Did My Best", "New World', "Bittersweeheart", "Misery", "Cradle Chain", and "The Game". Now, I know that you also love music in the harder rock vein, and I've got no complaints about that, though I can't say that is what has made me a Soul Asylum fan. But I do want to say that I hope you'll keep working in this vein, including the new tunes, including "Here We Go" and "If I Told You". Thank you so much for the feelings you've given to us over the years.
