Zoom ZDM-1 Podcast / Broadcast Dynamic Microphone Review / Test

- Today, I have the Zoom ZDM-1 Dynamic XLR Microphone in the Audio Hotline Studio! I wasn't originally too excited to review this mic. According to Zoom this microphone "A warm and rich Broadcast sound." So during this review I try to find out whether or not that statement is accurate. This microphone is meant to be used for spoken word application, such as: podcasts, broadcasts, streaming, etc. I take this microphone through my usual tests and see exactly what it is capable of!
A part of me just wanted to skip it, but then I got some comments from people about how I should try it out... SO HERE WE ARE! It's weird though, I LOVE a lot of Zoom products, so I don't know why I didn't want to try this. Maybe out of fear that I wouldn't like it since I tend to enjoy Zoom products 😂 and this one seemed a little lackluster when it came to being innovative like a lot of Zoom products... That could be it, but for you guys... I'll do anything! I mean it... Name it... It's DONE! 😉
Be sure to check out the testing and audio samples and see if this is right for you! Every person has different expectations of audio gear. If the features are what you need, and you like the sound, then it is right for you!
Thanks for watching the Audio Hotline! I'll see you Audio Nerds next time!

I’ve used this for dozens of podcast episodes. It took me a while to get it to sound the way I want, but now I love it. Fantastic value!
Do you mind sharing your post processing settings for it? I just picked one up and can’t quite tweak it right :/
@@KrihaFilms Honestly, I don't know too much about it. I use Garageband, and for my voice and that mic, I've slightly turned down the lows, slightly turned up the mids and highs, and added some compression and a noise gate. I'm really a total amateur, and it depends on your voice, but I hope this helps somewhat.
Amazon actually has a bundle right now for the Zoom PodTrak P4 Multitrack recorder plus 4 of the ZDM-1 Podcast packs for only $430. Pretty much everything you need to get a 4 person podcast going with individual mics and channels for under $500. Pretty insane value.
The most fun and yet detailed mic review I saw! And boy your videos look really good!
Just picked this up new at BestBuy on clearance for about $35. I also noticed a RODE XLR Cable and picket it up also. Paid about $75 for the mic and cable. Thanks for the review, it was the video that convinced me to get this mic. 👍
Bro, love your content and humor :). Because of this video today just ordered this Zoom ZDM-1. Keep up coming this videos 👍!
You deserve a hell of a lot more subs.. great channel bro. Keep killin it
I know right?! The production value is insane for the amount of subs he has
Thanks for giving us your take on it. I think this mic got lost in the sauce among some other, flashier recent releases, and I kept thinking, from the little I'd heard of its sound, the Zoom ZDM-1 deserved more love than it got, especially for the amazing price.
Kitty purr test is my new favourite mic test.
I got it for 60 bucks, and i really like the sound of this microphone! Also nice review as always!
awesome review, thanks for your precious advice and this more than complete test, will definitely have a try at this mic for podcasting.
Thank you mate !
Thank you for the review. Loved your presentation style.
I've been using this for 6 months or whatever and I like it. I had a condenser before and honestly I miss the bassy full sound I got on the condenser, but this has probably a more natural sound to it which is what I was hoping for. It does pick up mouth noises so be careful.
I don’t even read the title when I see your upload. I just click on the video and nerd out with the specs. 💪🏾
Great video, it really is a good surprise that this microphone is good. Good job!
Hands Down by Dashboard Confessional! You're taking me back to my elementary/middle school days!
I was feeling a little nostalgic!
I have 3 of these, very happy with them. As long as I don’t bump the mic stand. 😂
I came here for Chris Carrabba and was not disappointed.
OK, the mic review was pretty bang on, too. 💪🍻
All of what you said is accurate. I bought the package deal to do vocal recording on my Zoom L-12 portable studio. The headphones sound hollow or just shy of tinny. The mic stand could be a little taller for my application but the microphone did an excellent job. I just find the best balance between Gain, & Compression and I didn’t even have to use any EQ. Just dry in and a little FX, and doubling or tripling up on the vocals for harmony. All in all I don’t see why most people wouldn’t be satisfied with the sound quality of this package, especially for the price. 😁
Could you do some videos on audio postprocessing? Maybe start testing (free) VSTs!
Like your videos 👍
What about doing a live review, so that people can chat with you and ask questions during the review?
This is definitely a cool idea that I would be down to try!
That is a nice sounding mic. It should be pretty easy to EQ to just about any voice.
OMG! FINALLY a Kitty Purr Test! :)
Great video. Would you recommend this mic for audio books?
I love it I use it in my stream
Nice guitar playing 😊
You deserve more subs
Thanks for the review! Would have loved to hear it compared to at least one other mic.
If you go to my Tascam TM-70 review, around 7:21 I start the blind mic comparison test. The Zoom ZDM-1 is included in that comparison against 4 other similarly priced mics.

@@AudioHotline Awesome, thanks!
Hello! I have a Zoom H1n and I love it! I heard you need a FetHead for this microphone (because the sound is low, so you need maximize the gain), but... if I connect it to a recorder (the ones that have XLR input) or a Mixing Table, need I to use a FetHead? Thanks in advance. Greetings from Spain.
I want to see the studio set up. Camera and lighting too! C'mon show it to me...
holy shit this mic is dope
Could you share the Post processing and EQ settings?
Do i need a cloudlifter to use this mic? And can I just plugin to zoom h6 instead of any audio interface ? Thanks your videos!
Gracias amigo
Been using this for 2 days still very torn on if I should keep it or not.
BTW, Why didn't you want (reluctant) to review this mic before?
I think it is a good sounding mic?
Which do you prefer this mic over Presonus D70 ?
Is this set plug and play? That is to say do I have to buy whatsit box which XLR cables have to be plugged into for it to then plugged into our devices? I can't tell. Thank you!
After knowing and using the ZDM-1 would you recommend this mic. I am getting ready to buy the p4 podtrak with 4 of these ZDM-1’s for a podcast. Thanks.
I still think it’s really solid choice! The one mic I would recommend you check out and see if you like the sound of it more is the FiFine K669D… it came out not too long ago and it’s actually cheaper. Personally I like it more, but everyone has their own preferences!
I have a review of it here:
m.czcams.com/video/gG0Ht35ML7s/video.html
Really great mic for the price.
Hello , I have this mic but I do have to crank the gain almost all the way up. so question. can I use this mic with a cloud lifter?
cual microfno recomendarias usb-c para android para grabar voces? narracion voice-over
HOLA,DESDE PERU. QUÉ CAMARA USAS. ME GUSTA LOS COLORES Y EL TIPO DE ILUMINACIÓN
Would the behringer um2 be enough for this mic ?
I was gonna get this but for the Samson Q2U instead. I still like the Q2U a lot especially using the SE Electronics Dynamite 🧨
But I might trade it in and get this I don’t know yet only because I like the LOOKS of this better
Good review dude
Q2U is low key awesome. As you said, the looks aren't great. I've been thinking about painting mine
@@Aaron-os8qi definitely man, I painted mine first one but didn’t come out good but I’m not good with stuff like that. They make all black ones tho too you can buy instead of the ugly green
great job dude - i appreciate your comedy haha
Audio hotline, how come you and podcastage have like no self noise/noise floor in your reviews? even with usb mics!
Will this work ok with the Presonus Studio 24c interface?
The zoom is now $40. Would you recommend it over the Samson Q9x for podcasting?
vs the Blue Yeti?
I’m conflicted between an Audio Technica AT-2035 and a Rode Procaster, I need the microphone for zoom meetings and important presentations over videoconference, so my voice needs to be appealing to the viewer, I also have kinda of a deep voice, which one you think would make me stand out?
If you are going to be using the mic in different rooms or in a room without some sort of sound treatment, definitely go with the Procaster. The AT2035 will pick up way more room noise, therefore making it sound less professional. Condenser mics can sound great in a controlled room, but dynamic mics like the procaster are going to give you better results in uncontrolled/unpredictable environments.
Zdm 1 giving noice with my focus rite 18i 20 , i replaced xlr wire also, please help me if you konw about it
Kitty purr test 💖💖
Do this comparison ZDM-1 vs Podmic Vs RE320
This or the xm8500?
ok..... since u say it isnt recommended for singing.... pls show it... id love to since im planning to get one though. 😁
This mic is truly just meant for spoken word, that’s a big reason why I didn’t include a singing test. I did test this out with singing but this mic just can’t handle loud sound sources very well. For around the same price you could go with a Shure SM48 or a Mackie EM89d (on sale right now for cheap). If you are looking for a studio quality singing production, moving to a condenser mic in a treated space would be ideal.
@@AudioHotline Would this work for audiobooks?
How bout the sound quality of the headset? fairly good / what?
That’s a different buying option, you can get the mic alone or buy the podcast pack with headphones. I reviewed the mic itself. I am not big on reviewing headphones, it’s just a bit too opinion based for my liking. However, I have tried packs similar to this, and also had a friend share his opinion on the headphones with me. Based off that, the headphones build won’t be very good, they will be fine for monitoring your audio, but they will not be good for critical listening.
Today December 1 , 2022, is in $39 dollars in Amazon super deal!!!
THIS MAN SAID BREAST GUY LMAOOOOO
I am glad someone noticed!
@@AudioHotline YES I WON
Dashboard Confessionals 😂
You made it sound pretty good. I may pick one up for shots and giggles. Why haven’t you murdered a mic lately? My wife still asks if you’re killing bad microphones.
😂 I do miss murdering mics! It will definitely still happen!
I think since I have had companies reach out to me a bit more and offer microphones to test out, I have had the opportunity to be a little more picky with what I want to review. Not too long ago, every mic I tried out was money coming directly out of my pocket. So, some times I would try really cheap / bad ones... because it's what I could afford at the time 😂. There are currently two mics that I have that will definitely be getting some negative attention in the near future!
@@AudioHotline I know you don’t realize who this is. The Gut Punch News didn’t disappear, I was turned into Bob the alien. Better than my real face. 👽❤️
Oh shit!!!! Yeah I had no idea! I was wondering where you were! Hell yeah dude, that’s awesome!
@@AudioHotline i was having heart issues. Very stressed and two family members died within 4 months. I decided life is too short to explain shit to idiots. BTW, go look up Alien Outhouse on YT. haven’t done much because, I just finished closing my dad’s estate with my brother. Hope you’re well.
@@TheOuthousePhilosopher damn, that is terrible. I am very sorry for your loss. I hope that you and your family are doing well and that your health is getting better! I will definitely go watch and subscribe!
What microphone would you recommend for voice recordings under 75$? Can you share me the link to your review of it? I want a mice that only picks up me speaking into it, cutting down on background noise as much possible. I'm very new to mics, i know very little about them. I have a MacBook, so it needs to be usb c compatible.
The samson q2u or the new audiotechnica
I mean for an $80 mic it’s pretty darn good. I’m still a lewitt LDT 440 pure kinda guy, but still good.
The donwside of this mic are Shock Mount Bump & Mic Resonance Tap issues.....and you miss it in your review.....
Bro you funny
Why isnt this good for guitar?
PRESONUS M7 PLEASE REVIEW. I CAN PAY FOR IT IF YOU NEED $$
Can't fault it at that price.
This mic has an artifical gritty warmth that i dont like. iMHO
sm7b так вами любимый, шумящая фигня... его давно уделали по полной, любой дешёвкой.... что zoom zdm-1, что tascam tm70
Bro it took you far too long to tell us you're using the mic you're talking about. lol lead with that, I would watch 6 seconds and know I want to buy one. =p =p
Are you joking? Maybe you are, because I say “this is the zoom ZDM-1 and point at it at the 0:06 second mark…
@@AudioHotline he’s gotta be joking 🙄😒
