  • In one of only three television interviews since her release from Russian detention, WNBA star Brittney Griner spoke to the PBS NewsHour co-anchor Amna Nawaz about her nearly 10-month-long detention in Russia. She was detained after medically- prescribed vape cartridges containing less than a gram of cannabis oil were found in her bags. She was detained in Feb. 2022 and was released in Dec. 2022 in exchange for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.
"There's there's no doubt in my mind that once they knew who I was and they had me, that I was being held," Griner told Nawaz. "I didn't feel like my life was mine. It was in someone else's hands. It was in other people's hands. It's a feeling that I never want to feel ever again.
Watch more of the conversation with Griner on the PBS NewsHour on May 6 and 7.
