  • What are the Limits of Radio Telemetry? How good is radio telemetry? in this video i wanted to test what are the limits of radio telemetry. in falconry we rely on radio telemetry for tracking birds of prey, and learning how the system works and its limits is important in falconry for beginners. I put radio telemetry through 4 tests. How does terrain affect radio telemetry, how does water affect radio telemetry, how do trees affect radio telemetry, and what is the range of radio telemetry.

Hi Dan, thanks for yet another fantastic video your always so happy and upbeat. I always look forward to your content, after watching this I fully understand the importance of rt which admittedly never did before 😢 so thank you for your time with this video! ❤🦉🦅

You are very welcome, radio telemetry should be an absolute standard on almost all free flying birds, there are exceptions like burrowing owls that are too small and some caracaras and vultures that just eat them but other than that it should be a standard

Marshall aren't lying, but I think they, and all telemetry manufacturers, are playing right on the edge of being deceptive. The claim is always "line of sight". It is a measure of power output. The actual range is determined by the horizon, which in turn is dependent on height. For a transmitter at 5 feet and a receiver at 6 feet, the line of sight is approximately 8 miles. Interestingly, my Sterling RM-12 claims 40 miles LOS and would probably give a similar result to the Marshall in the distance test. To get the stated 40 mile range on my RM-12 would require a bird at approximately 1, 000 feet (not wholly unattainable) whereas the Marshall would require a bird at 10, 000 feet to get over 100 miles.

Hi Dan! Great vid, solid tests and observations. I am using a standard Tinyloc radio kit and happen to have the same experience than you here in north-western France. We have quite some landforms, and even if Tinyloc says its system is operational for like 80 km, I had difficulties to spot my Harris hawk 15 km away with boosts maxed out. I guess the arguments are quite commercial, and yes, it would be really appreciated if the manufacturers give more accurate indications on specific environments, when we have to get our proteges back! Keep up the good work! - Romain

I don’t think it was the most fair test with josh driving down the motorway but to even struggle at 6 miles is a bit scary!

      @@MercerFalconry It sure is scary.
Looking forward to your tests and observations on GPS systems! ;) As other viewers, I'm also considering buying one (Marshall), but the more I look into it, the more I want to buy an extra RT receiver and emitters for my birds, equipping them with two for possibly long birdscaring sessions.
My male Harris hawk also broke one emitter case in a year, batteries happened to be deficient twice... and I think it is probably better to use radiotelemetry if a bird is to be searched after, by many people using this same technology.

    Hi Dan!
These are exactly the videos I need right now. I also use the tinyloc for my harris hawk, but I am currently thinking if the Marshall GPS system would not be better because I live very urban here in Germany. Luckily I've never had to track my bird down so far.

I personally wouldnt swap using radio for GPS, while there are many benefits to GPS, the battery life just doesnt come close to what you get with radio telemtry. The GPS sytem is great to have and usefull to quickly find a bird, but i wouldnt want a bird properly on the lose and mesing around with only GPS and not radio. I think GPS at the moment is just an extra toy on top of radio, thats just my view though!

Hi, ive been interested in learning falconry, with the possibility of getting a harris hawk as my first bird, what would you recommend i do to be in a good position to take a new bird on?
I've seen 5 day courses for example, do you think this is worth while? Or would i be able to learn everything needed to start from reading/watching videos etc?
    Thank you for your time.

I would definitely try to get as much hands on experience as possible, weather that is a 5 day course, volunteering at a centre, or finding a mentor. You can’t prepare for a bird of prey just by watching videos so try and get as much hands on as you can!
