- Before you lose your hawk, watch this video! If you want to be a falconer and free fly your hawk, you need to know how to track your hawk and how to find your hawk. In this video we go over what to do if you lose your hawk. If you have lost your hawk without telemetry, there are a few things you can do such as reading the environment and wildlife and sharing on social media.
However, this video is aimed more about how to find a lost bird of prey wearing a tracking system. In this video you will see me using a tracker to find my hawk, well a mock run anyway, I have not actually lost my hawk. Finding a lost bird of prey can be very difficult at times, so it is important to know how to use telemetry for these situations.
Using radio telemetry is very simple once you have the hang of it, so new falconers, trust me, the radio telemetry system is not to be feared!

Thanks for watching!

Another good video Dan. Very informative.
Thank you 😁
Finally you decided to follow the footprints of your friend. Cheers !
Great video once again and great stressing the importance of telemetry and Gps
Thanks I appreciate it!
Nice 1 great video as always 👍
Thank you, got a couple secret projects in the pipeline that I think you would benefit from so stay tuned!
@@MercerFalconry nice 1 can't wait 👍
Your video really explains the importance of good Telemetry setup, good job. OSH :-)
Thanks a lot, I don’t think it’s pushed on people new to falconry enough, I think we would have a lot less lost birds in the uk if newbies where really told how important it is!
@@MercerFalconry
I think one of the problem in the UK is you guys don't have a sponsorship license program like we do in the states. If a newbie had a sponsor teaching them the ropes for 2 years, I think every base would be covered when they're out on their own.
Absolutely, it’s crazy to me that legally here in the uk any random person can go out and buy any bird they like. What’s scary is that there are some breeders that will just sell to anyone without even checking if they have everything in place for the bird
@@MercerFalconry
I know, I have friends in the UK that complain about this exact subject.
It’s a shame that we know about it but still let it happen
Great video mate love the drone shots!
Thanks, we really should use the drone more, im going to try and add cool shots like that in future videos
would love to see it man rly shows of the British countryside at its best!
I would love to have an eagle one day and train it to soar thousands of feet with a small camera attached to its back, that would show off the countryside in a very different way!
@@MercerFalconry Im sure you have but watch GoPros video on the eagle hunters, some of those shots are just insane
Yes it’s incredible, such a cool way to film, I wish I could but I just don’t have a bird big enough yet!
Very interesting great chat, I have used my tinyloc on two long searches this season one long search where hawk was on a pheasant 40 minute walk, another where hawk was down a rabbit hole even when located I had to call him out for several minutes.
Invaluable piece of equipment.
Keep up the good work.
The tinyloc is great, thankfully I haven’t had to use it in a while but it’s so easy when it is needed, and I can’t believe people pay way more for other brands that have less features!!!
@@MercerFalconry I agree I like it , it’s been great going through confined woods being small , I have others but this is always with me.👍
So easy to carry. I am excited to use my gps in the summer though, watch some birds thermal!
@@MercerFalconry hopefully they will come down in price 👍
I’m sure as they become more popular it will get to a point where enough people are selling them second hand that the price will have to drop
I’ve got telemetry from Ben long, but I’m still going to use gps. Love your vids, take care.
ive recently started using GPS and i love it!
What type of telemetry would you use for a kestrel, either American or Eurasian?
A5oya yosta I have bald eagle and I want to train it make training video plz
I have a 'lost bird' card I put on the dash of my vehicle with my contact information.
That’s a good idea, all of my birds are registered with the IBR!
you don't need the transmitter/receiver. just follow his footprints in the snow, haha :)
That’s cheating! 😂
best question u been asked me do it take batterys
Does the telemetry run on battery’s? Yes!
@@MercerFalconry no stupidest question i been asked do my falcon run on batteries
Ahhhh the public can be quite daft sometimes 😂
@@MercerFalconry carnt they just suprising how meany time i been asked
The one I usually get is “does it come back?”
And what if you dont have any of those tools? How did falconers call their birds back in XIX century?
They used bells to listen out for their birds but would have to keep their birds closer, we can now give our hawks a bit more freedom to roam. Now the technology exists i personally think it’s irresponsible to not use it
The last time I had to track mine she went 40 miles
Wow that’s a long way!!!
im still using 173 get on beter it
Lol literally got my gps
What gps do you use? I have Marshall
@@MercerFalconry yep Marshall Telemetry
Do you use both gps and radio telemetry or just the gps?
ben long is the best
I’m sure he would appreciate hearing that, but I doubt he will see it here in my comments!
