Hello Friends!
I'm so excited today, we are doing a Collaboration with Ms. Candace White! This is going to be awesome!
Candace suggested this wonderful color palette (she is the one who introduced me to Artists Loft Red Ochre, which I totally LOVE!)

There is no silicone in my paint.
Candace wanted to pour on a 24x36 canvas, so here we go!
I layer my cup carefully down the side, keeping contrast in mind. Light Dark, light dark..
I put down a basecoat of Neutral Beige, and then pour a wandering straight pour diagonally across the canvas.
I decided I wanted more Turquois so I poured some around the edges as a flow extender. I begin to tilt side to side to spread out the pour. I put down some Van Dyke Brown on the sides where I want more contrast. Once that pour is really stretched out I begin to layer a cup again.. light dark, light dark. I pour that cup in a wandering straight pour onto the empty areas and begin to tilt. We have speeded up some of the tilting because it took a while lol..
Once I have the canvas covered, I begin to focus on the composition.. more tilting 😂 but I really love the effects of tilting and stretching out the paint.
Once I am done, I really look at it and I see a dark brown Dragon flying through the clouds at Sunset. Really amazing color, especially the Red Ochre and the 24k Gold. I'm in love with this piece!!

Mina what a great video! My grandkids and I were just yelling SQUIRREL yesterday at the cubscout party lol. I love watching the Dragon form and fall in to place. He is so cool! I so enjoyed doing this colab with you. You have taught me so much...like if you dont like whats on the canvas, just pour over it lol. Your painting came out amazing! I love how your red ocher inter twined with the gold and is accented by the contrast of the turqoise and vandyke brown. Most of all I'm thankful we met and I now have a wonderful friend. I love just about every single painting that you've done. I am one who started about 6 weeks ago and am having a hell of a time getting a painting that is remotely acceptable. I've painted over about 8 canvases, thrown 4 away, scraped more than I can remember and have saved only 7 little tiny ones. It's been a nightmare, truly it has and I thought it was going to be such a great hobby to take me out of feeling sorry for myself and staying in bed all day due to my disability, walking only with the assistance of a walker (I'm only 67) thinking, "I can do this". Well, for those who are reading this, it is NOT as easy as it looks! The first time I used silicone and then after watching many artists who never use it, I decided I would no longer use it. I 'm here to tell you, neither way worked for me but I'll say, having the thicker than water paint was better than having it so watery it flew off the canvas and mixed to get muddy. I've tried it Gina DeLuca's way having my paint very thin and having it like you and Sarah be a bit on the thicker side. I will say, that I get no cells at all when it's too thick and my paint separated from the other paint down to the canvas when I made it thinner. I bought the Liquitex PM and Varnish like you use but you never say how much Floetrol you use and I do think it makes a difference. I'm willing to buy though the Liquitex PM Gloss and Varnish but it is very expensive. I just really need to know how much Floetrol to add. It is so much cheaper than the other I'd rather use more of that than the Liquitex brand but if it helps me get better at what I'm doing I'm willing to go for it. I only bought 32 oz for starters and realize that if its a success my $$$$$ will up, up, up and that's the part that scares me. I am spending so much money on paint. I had to take a day off today because I have a serious back injury and though I sit until I have to stand up it is still very painful for me to even do this hobby. So today was a rest day even though I seriously wanted to get to painting. I used to make beautiful jewelry with all the good stones and real crystals and sterling. I couldn't afford 14 K unless someone ordered it that way but I used the real stones and like all hobbies I start, I go all in. Arthritis in my hands was the downfall. On a truly low hard fixed income, I truly do not have the money to do this but it keeps me sane. I live a life of pain and thought this would be the hobby that I could do. I am beginning to wonder if I've lost brain cells or had a head injury from the motorcycle accident that was the beginning of my downfall. I live alone and just know how lucky you are to have a supportive husband who films you and is very much a part of what you do. I am asking you to contact me about the amount of your Floetrol. The largest canvas I have done is a 16"X20" and there it sits in its abysmal appearance waiting for me to do a pour over. Oh, that makes me think. How often can you pour over a single canvas?

To answer your question about how much Floetrol..
I can give you the recipe that I used for months and months, until I got a few bottles of very thin Floetrol and everything changed.
I start with a 16 ounce cup. I put 2 ounces of Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish in, then approximately 1 ounce of paint. I stir that up until its well combined. If it's very thick and not stirring easily I add a little water, maybe a teaspoon or two at a time. At this point I have about 3.5 ounces of mixed paint in my cup. I usually add between 8 to 10 ounces of Floetrol, and end up with about 13 ounces of mixed paint. If it's still very thick, I will add a little water at a time until it flows easily off the end of the stick, leaving a mound on a mound.
As I have mentioned in several of the last videos, the Floetrol I have had recently has been very thin, like water. It should normally be like melted ice cream or like marshmallows..fluffy like heavy cream almost. The first few times I mixed paints with the thin Floetrol I followed the recipe above, and got terrible results, the paint was very thin and watery. I added more paint to my cups the next time I mixed, to combat the thin Floetrol. Then I realized that I can just add a little bit at a time and not worry about the exact number in the recipe, but focus instead on getting the mix to the correct Consistency. I didn't end up with 13 ounces, I was ending up with 7 or 8 ounces total, but it was the right consistency.
In a nutshell, the exact number does not matter. Mix your pouring medium and paint 2:1 and then add the Floetrol an ounce at a time until it's where you want it. I love Gina's work,she has a great video on consistency that you should definitely check out. On her scale, I like my paint at a 3 or 4. If you have your paint this thick you need to make sure that you tilt a lot to get most of it off. The pouring Medium you are using is giving your paint the ability to stretch.. go slow and be patient and let the paint stretch over the canvas. If you leave too much paint on your canvas it will crack. My test is to tilt it almost vertically, the paint should barely move, or move very slowly if it moves at all. To that end you want to estimate how much paint you will need per what size canvas. The formula for that is multiplying the length by the width, then dividing by 28. LxW, then divide by 28. That gives you how many ounces of paint you need to cover a canvas. ( For a 12x12 you multiply
12x12=144
Then 144÷28 = 5.14 ounces needed to cover a 12x12.) You can get away with a few ounces extra, but you really do want to stretch and open up the design. If you have too much paint on your canvas you end up tipping most of it off and it's more difficult to keep the parts you want.
I really hope that this information helps you, I know how frustrating and expensive a bad pour can be. Rest assured tho that you are not alone in that, everyone has pours that don't work sometimes. Try to figure out why it didn't work, and correct the mistake. This is how you will grow as an artist. Also, forgive yourself if the pour isn't perfect. This may look easy but there are a ton of things to take into account. Also, don't scrape everything. Things change as they dry, and sometimes you like it better after a day or two. Give it a chance. As to how many times you can pour over a canvas.. I frequently repour over test canvases, and over big ones too. After two pours you run the risk of the paint cracking, in my experience. If you are having problems I would suggest a limited color palette and going back to a tried and true technique. What technique are you using and what's happening that's making you scrape it? A thicker consistency will hold the shape of your design better.
You don't need silicone to get cells. You can get them with a straight pour. The secret to good cells is being patient. Wait a few minutes for them to develop.. then most importantly, don't tilt them all off. This is part of the how much paint do you need equation.. you want to be able to get cells and not tilt them all off.
I wish you the best of luck.. I would advise you to relax and experiment with the Floetrol a little at a time. You can also use the regular Liquitex Pouring Medium if you are are not planning on selling it. Practice getting to know the right consistency.. it will serve you well. I wish you the best of luck.. you will get there sooner than you think.

@@MinaVillegasArt Mina, it was a wonderful seeing that you responded and you gave me so much good information. I bought the medium you use and opened it tonight. I mixed my paints since I didn't have the colors I wanted. One thing that I have had to learn along with mixing and mediums is the parity of transparency of each paint. It has been a task and have done the the research. I discovered that mixing that one different color in with the same recipe Gina used made a mess of things because it was transparent and indeed it looked transparent. There was a pink film over the entire painting and indeed it looked like pink slime had been spilled on top of it. Now, I have not heard a single artist but Gina talk about that aspect of paints. I was in Junior High when I took art lessons and I don't recall this issue being brought up. It was a long, long time ago. But I'm not giving up and in fact, I hope you got to your local Michael's today because their canvases were half off. And of course any time I want to use the same pallet as you or another artist uses, I don't have those colors. I feel like I have them all, but lo and behold, I got on a site tonight where I wanted to try to color combos out (I have most of your videos logged onto my computer with your pallets too and how you layer your cup). I haven't gotten all of them yet but I'm working on it. I love that you make your colors available. Thank you so much for your inspirations and your advice.
My daughter lives in Burbank, as I believe you stated that you live in Southern CA. Her son is in a TV series called Manifest on NBC at 9pm on Mondays. His character name is TJ and his real name is Garrett Wareing. Its too early to know if there will be a Season 2 but of course he is hoping so. He's all of 18 yrs old and VERY tall. His brother is even taller and 16. My granddaughter goes to UC Riverside and is 20. My daughter started her family at 21 in such a big hurry to have children but soon her nest will be empty and she will still be very young.
I love this painting and think about it day and night. I have to pace myself though because I've suffered some terrible injuries from a motorcycle accident almost 20 years ago and it hurts my back terribly if I do too much. I'd do it all day long but when I scrape two canvases in one night I get high anxiety because, as you can imagine, my purse strings got cut significantly when I got hurt. I was able to go back to work as a NICU nurse but only when I finally amputated my left leg. Had I done that right away, I might have been able to save my back, but I will never know. I just want to do this and I will heed your advice and also use your recipe for mixing and thanks again so much for your willingness to help. Have you tried the Owetrol which is like the European Floetrol-ish but seems to not have the 'floogers" and a more consistent mix. It's on Amazon and is sold in liters, I think.

Hello Mina, what an intense picture! It radiates warmth. Evening sun hitting rocks. Wonderful! I have a problem that I have never been able to read. Some of my pictures have become really nice, but when they are dry you can clearly see the structure of the canvas. When wet: smooth, shiny and rich in color. Dried: the structure of the canvas, dull and matt colors. I don't think that's so nice. What can you do about it? Should you prime the canvas beforehand so that it is "saturated" and so the colors sink less? If so, with what? I dont know. Maybe you have a tip. That would be great. Colorful greetings from Luna
