  • Jesse was the father of King David and the great-great-(many greats)-grandfather of Jesus. The concept of a Jesse tree comes from the prophecy of Isaiah, which reads:
“But a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom.”
    -Isaiah 11:1
Christians attribute this passage to Jesus Christ. Jesus was the branch (shoot) and flower (bud) that grew out of the stump (roots) of Jesse’s tree.
Sometime during the middle ages, stained-glass windows began to depict the family tree of Jesus as “Jesse Trees.” The connection between a family tree and the root of Jesse in the Book of Isaiah seemed like an obvious connection.
With Jesse Trees, Christians remember the many important figures and family members of Jesus throughout the Bible that lead up to the birth of Christ. The Jesse Tree is a way to celebrate Jesus’s coming by looking at the lives of the people who came before him.
Here is a common sequence of ornaments in a Jesse Tree:
    December 1: Adam and Eve
    December 2: Noah
    December 3: Abraham
    December 4: Isaac
    December 5: Jacob
    December 6: Joseph
    December 7: Moses
    December 8: Ruth
    December 9: Samuel
    December 10: Jesse
    December 11: David
    December 12: Solomon
    December 13: Isaiah
    December 14: Jeremiah
    December 15: Mary
    December 16: Joseph
    December 17: John the Baptist
    December 18: O Wisdom
    December 19: O Lord
    December 20: O Flower of Jesse's Stem
December 21: O Key of David
    December 22: O Radiant Dawn
December 23: O King of the Nations
    December 24: O Emmanuel
The final week of the Jesse Tree features a series of prayers called the “O Antiphons” (O Wisdom, O Lord, O Flower of Jesse’s Stem, O Emmanuel, etc.). The prayers are the familiar beginnings of each verse of the Christmas carol “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.”
The Jesse Tree tradition in home developed along with two other Advent traditions: Christmas trees and Advent calendars. The Christmas tree has ornaments just like a Jesse Tree and the Advent calendar marks each new day leading up to Christmas just like the ornaments in a Jesse Tree.
