  • Video of the Victorian Cowgate Cemetery, Dover, Kent, England (UK).
Abridged extracts from the plaque just inside the main (northern) entrance:
"Dover's Cowgate Cemetery is named after the medieval gate which allowed townspeople to graze their animals on the lower slopes of the Western Heights.
The land, over two acres in extent, was donated by William Mowll and consecrated in 1835 by the Archbishop of Canterbury as an extension to the Parish churchyard.
The layout of the cemetery is attributed to Stephen Geary, the architect who designed London's Highgate Cemetery.
In 1990 the Wildlife Conservation Community Program (WCCP) discovered a small population of the Garden Dormouse (Eliomys quercinus) living in the cemetery. The Garden Dormouse is not 'officially' recorded as living in Britain."
The 'Mystery Vault' photograph (with the empty coffin) referred to in the video is at:

Cowgate Cemetery is now considered to be a nature reserve.

Excellent piece of work, I took a walk around the cemetery last night, not been there for around 15 years, I am a Dover history obsessive !! Take a look up the top of St James's cemetery, near the Terson vault, the scenery and flora and fauna are superb

Thanks for this - I was born in Dover 1947 and my Grandmother lived in the sheltered accomodation just off this cemetary,, have been there many times and I know Dover better than the back of my hand (or so I thought...) but there is always something that is new about where I was born and grew up. Got lost in the underground tunnels just off the danes football grounds when I was about 8 - did you know about them (out of the back of a pillbox) used to live on Buckland estate and would go a lot..

Thanks, Stuart! The only Tersons I know of today are J B Terson & Son of 27-29 Castle Street. Also, one of the earlier comments to this video made by Chris Grimes says there's a Terson vault in St James Cemetery.

Thank you for the info, Stuart. I've only made a few videos of Dover, but I've uploaded hundreds of still images - including shots of Cowgate & St James' cemeteries. If I come across the vaults you mention, that's just the kind of stuff I like to add in a caption!

Thank you John. Wonderful to get to see the place where my Gates ancestors were buried. I'm in Canada so this is the next best thing to visiting in person. Keep up the good work!

Omgosh! This is absolutely gorgeous! I can see how it was modeled like Highgate! The Victorians even in death were full of pomp and circumstance. I love the serenity of this cemetery. I am sure the majority of headstones were hand carved with labor intensive tools of the era! I am a taphophile or lover of cemeteries and headstones. The headstones reveal so much about the previous generations. I love the investigative work of finding facts out about cemeteries around me and the people that were buried there! An extremely interesting video. It would be wonderful if you could go back and do some vids of individual headstones. I would love to see what they say. And the dates too! The decorative aspect of the headstones is very beautiful. It just adds a certain ambience to the scenery. Really amazing! Thanks so much for sharing this! Loved it!

I know that when I used to go there (that must have been in the mid to late 50`s) they were falling into disrepair even then and some of the tunnels had fallen in. We went in with candles and a ball of string - to find our way out again !! So I doubt if they are still accessible today but it`s worth a try...never did find out what they were built for and am still trying...!

What a beautifully serene spot. I've looked at your photo of that vault, and I found it quite troubling. I wonder if any of the other vaults suffered interference like this? The lack of any real damage, other than the broken bier, made me think that possibly, only possibly, that it might have been 'Resurrection' Men.

Enjoyed your video of Cowgate cemetery. Today I found out through the very prompt Dover Council that a relative of mine, William Pearce, is buried in plot 1, grave 221 along with another 14 people. There is no headstone. I am coming to Dover next September and wish to go to the cemetery to see if I can find the plot. Do you think there is any chance of me finding it and is the cemetery within walking distance of the town. I will be staying at a hotel near the ferry terminal.
