  • Use this to find your vocal range - it only takes 1 minute.
If you sing solo you need to know your range so that you can put songs into keys that suit your voice best.
If you sing in a choir, you need to know your range to find the right section of the choir for you e.g. soprano, alto etc. If you practice singing your vocal range may increase over time.
Choir Section vocal ranges are shown in a table at the end of the video so you can see where your vocal range fits in.

In the studio I can make it work but Live , it’s hit or miss. One day it’s working, next day it’s not, then it works then it’s not etc . I have a coach now to help me make it more consistent . I think most ppl are either fabricating a bit haha or going off the notes they can sing on vowels but not necessarily what they can sing and use in songs.

I've occasionally wondered whether it's true that, once a person starts training in singing and develops thier technique, their range increases significantly. Would this be upward, downward, or both? How much would the expansion typically be?

Exactly! When I was younger, I believed to be untalented, because I couldn‘t sing high or reach the really deep notes in some songs even though I was quite good at pitch accuracy, tone and so on. Well, turned out I’ve been an alto with a “normal” range, so no surprise I couldn‘t reach many high notes. Knowing that taught me to accept that I‘m a good singer who is just a little limited at the time.
But after practicing to extend my range I can now sing up to an A5, so practicing always helps to improve your voice and singing!
