  • Ryzen 3000 RAM frequency, latency, uclock, mclock, and fclock matter more than anything else for the R9 3900X, 3700X, and 3600. We're looking for the best RAM for Ryzen.

    We benchmarked an AMD R9 3900X Ryzen 3000-series CPU with various kits of memory from HyperX (Kingston), Crucial (Micron), GSkill, Corsair, and GeIL across two motherboards (the X570 Aorus Master and X570 Godlike). This matrix of results allows us to have a fuller picture of truly bad memory/board combinations for Ryzen 3000 and demonstrates results scaling from low frequencies to high. Critically, we also tuned fclock, uclock, mclock, and the ratios between them, as we went. Kits include 2400MHz, 3000MHz, 3200MHz, 3600MHz, 3866MHz, 4000MHz, and overclocking up to 4200MHz, along with primary, secondary, and tertiary timing adjustments as needed. For the most part, we tested with XMP, but further manual tuning was also done, along with software-assisted manual tuning from Ryzen Memory Calculator. Remember, buying the "best" RAM for Ryzen 3000 isn't good enough -- you also need to buy the right motherboard with the RAM. If the memory isn't on the motherboard's QVL, it may exhibit exceptionally poor performance.

Difference in performance between 3200 C16 and 3200 C14/3600 C16 is about 1-3% but for 70-80% more cost. The best value to performance goes to 3200 C16 by a long shot thank you, but Steve forgot to mention this.

      @Miggsval Před 4 lety +12

      Not entirely true, the cl14 en cl16 kits have B-die making them able to have very tight timings using dram calculator or doing it yourself. So performance would go up even more. You could compare i1t to the 3800mhz kit with the 1:1 ratio. So your looking at 10-15% performance for 70-80 bucks. Still not efficient but worth it imo.

Ironically the latency we get these days is HORRIBLE compared to what we got back then, but the higher speeds more than make up for it. There is one benchmark you might consider for future memory testing. Factorio's simulation speed has been demonstrated to be highly sensitive to RAM speed much more so than CPU clock. Upgrading RAM will often result in much higher gains than upgrading to a faster CPU. I believe the command line has useful tools for benchmarking, and the simulation speed can be unlocked to run as fast as the system can support. The game measures it in UPS (updates per second). Many players and the development team keep save games of very large maps for performance testing.
    This might be a good way to eliminate the concern with GPU bottlenecking and better highlight differences in RAM speeds.

    • @petrkinkal1509

The point is to use something with a clear RAM bottleneck in order to isolate the RAM differences in the benchmark. reminds me of how back then overclocking the FSB was better than overclocking the chip on its own.

      Simpler times :) quad-pumped, memcon dependent on board and chipset not cpu, pairing a Pentium 4 with ddr3 :D

      yeah but a pentium 4 is crap paired with anything.Overclocking anything else but the cpu would yeild more performance and less heat that a prescott....
      Still i rather have a althon 64 than a p4

      I was using a Pentium 4 as a wayback to how decoupled the processor was to RAM and so on and with LGA775 you could go as high as Core 2 Quad. E.g. OCing a Q6600 is easier with DDR3 because it can go higher freq to match ratios instead of hoping your DDR2 can go 1066 or 1333 even with loose timings. Back then too I didnt need to worry about Hypertransport or ratios and uncore and just OCed my Pentium 3 266 to 533 with just doubling the FSB -- up until Core 2 Duos and Quads of even the lowest models (like the E2140 starting at~1.6GHz) achieving at least 3GHz so long as you set PCIE, SATA, and RAM freq to fixed. Also since there's no IMC in the CPU itself, overvolting ram doesnt cook the CPU, just the chipset.

    @Gamers Nexus: There are 2 Trident Z Neo 3600 CL 16 Versions, the GTZN (16 - 16 -16 - 36) and the GTZNC (16 - 19 -19 - 39). Could you tell us which one you tested? Thank you :)

    It would be nice to see a new review in the same spirit of this one but with currently available highest speed RAM and the new ZEN3 CPUs. Also posting manufacturer model numbers for all RAM sticks used would be helpful. I am still trying to figure out what 3800 kit overclocked to 4200 CL16 was used to get many of the top benchmarks.

    hey steve, gamers nexus team, great video. as always preaching the word of the scientific method.
    i just wanted to point out that buildzoid in his channel did additional testings to determine the lag
    in ns. between ram and cpu (as i understood it). is such a data point something that will affect fps
    in games or just overall lag of the system while performance remains the same?
    thanks again for your great video and keep up the good work.
    ps: i apologize if its a stupid question : )

    Was going to speed up playback speed like I usually do with CZcams tutorials. No point here.

    Great information but I am noticing you forgot an important part of this testing process. You did not check the manufacturer of the silicon chips, I.E. Micron, Samsung, SK Hynix. Considering Samsung B-Die RAM is highly recommended for Ryzen 3000s, this seems like a crucial bit of information.

    • @weavercs4014
      @weavercs4014 Před 4 lety

      You can pretty much tell whether it's B-Die by the cost and the RAM in general. Like, even without being told, you know Corsair Vengeance LPX doesn't use B-Die but Trident Royals do
