It can be a bit tricky, but once you get enough seeds from scaring off birds; just make sure to talk to them, water them, make sure to have the nutrients, and clear EVERY! FORM! OF! WEED! If you see a weed such as a forget-me-lot, dig it up IMMEDIATELY! Soon each seed from a bird will make one crop randomly, you can then feed the crop to a bird in a bird cage to get its specific seeds!
And with enough of your own unique seeds, you can then get started on sister planting which is basically potato and tomato in a form plot, considering they help each other out in terms of nutrients.

I'm looking forward to Klei expanding the farm's uses in later patches. There's a lot you could do with farm plots mechanically that isn't "grow food", and with how Don't Starve operates I imagine we'll get there in time. Things like growing plants that attack hostile mobs that get too close (or attack *you* if you let it's stress get too high), plants that grow things like Living Log, Plants that glow in the dark or explode after getting hit (knocking down trees, stripping grass and twigs, etc), such like that. It would also encourage the avid farmer to explore biomes outside of the surface, or incorporate new plant-based bosses that drop the seeds you need for these plants.

Like maybe a bigger brother of the Stonefruit that grows armor items, one that grows stuff that can be used to fuel the fire (I've always been waiting for an alternative main fuel source in DST, having a chance to save a bunch of logs would be amazing). The stress element opens a sea of flavor possibilities to make them backfire, like that plant that attacks you, that's a super flavorful idea!

I have a solution for the "useless" crop situation, but I use crops from different seasons which means not all of them will be giant year long.
    Pumpkin + watermelon
Pumpkin is the crop that restores the most hunger and watermelons can be used cooked to restore 7,5 sanity or used in the crock pot to make melonsicles that restore 20 sanity
    Potato + tomato
Both of these when cooked restore 20 health
    Dragonfruit + garlic + onion
Garlic with potatoes can make a recipe to restore 33 sanity and the same goes for onion with tomato and dragonpie is one of the best recipes in the game

  • @fictitiousacct6649
    @fictitiousacct6649 Před 3 lety +2

I found out I can just go dragonfruit and tomato in a 1:2 ratio year round (after you get the first 4 dragonfruit seeds) with the fruit fly tending my gardens. This gives easy ways to heal my health and sanity with dragonpie, cooked tomatoes and vegetable stingers (3 tomatoes plus ice). Since it's only 2 crops, it doesn't overcrowd my fridge and the only time I need to spend in my garden is to till the ground, pick them and plant them.

  • @HS-sn8dp
    @HS-sn8dp Před 2 lety +1

I only use two crop combinations. Dragonfruit*3+Toma Root*6 for spring/summer, and Pumpkin*4+Potato*4+Garlic*2 for autumn/winter. This combination does it all, along with some stone fruits as fillers. In spring/summer we have dragonfruit for health/hunger(Dragonpie) and toma roots for sanity(Spicy Vegetable Stinger). In autumn/winter we have pumpkins for hunger, potato for health, and potato+garlic for sanity(Fancy Spiralled Tubers, Creamy Potato Puree). You only have to remember two combinations and four recipes.

Personally, in Autumn and Spring I grow tomatoes and potatoes at a 1:1 ratio. In Winter I grow asparagus, potatoes, and carrots at a 1:1:1 ratio. And in Summer I grow tomatoes and dragon fruit at a 2:1 ratio.
I play Wurt, so I primarily have to make these foods work on their own because there aren't a lot of good crockpot dishes. But potatoes and tomatoes restore 20 health a piece, and dragon fruit pie restores 40. Potatoes restore either 25 or 33 hunger if you're Wurt which is really good for hunger. And if you put tomato, or asparagus into a crockpot with 1 ice and 2 filler, I usually use 2 potatoes as filler, it makes a smoothie that restores 33 sanity.
So if you take my suggestion and grow those crops in those seasons you'll always have food for any of your bars. It's got a source of health, sanity, and hunger food at all times of the year. I've never really needed to grow anything else.

I usually use crop combos even if I don't want all the crops so my seeds don't spoil
Thankfully, now that I can kill bee queen, I can just bundle the seeds
My favorite crop combos tend to change depending on how far I've progressed
    Early game I'm always farming
Potato - corn - pumpkin in autumn
Asparagus - potato - pumpkin in winter
Potato - tomato or tomato - tomato - dragon fruit in spring
Tomato - tomato - dragonfruit or the spice combo in summer
But once I progress enough, I only farm once in summer and once or twice in autumn.
One full 2 by 2 plot of tomato and dragon fruit in the summer
One full tomato Potato in the autumn (optional)
one full pepper, onion, garlic combo. Also autumn
It just handles everything I needed for the year
Dragon fruit - dragon pie for health and hunger
Potato - sometimes just eaten straight but combined with the garlic for decent hunger, sanity, and health
Onion - combine with leafy meat and tomato (same exact stats from the creamy potato, just different ingredients)
Tomato - gets bundled or goes to waste (the reason I use it as vegetable filler in veggie burger)

Also I think the Salt Box is absolutely amazing at keeping veggie fresh, at larger scale. Raw potato stuffed into Salt box lasts just as long as Pierogi in a Fridge and then when going to fight boss just cook them up shortly beforehand. Raw garlic or onion last in Salt box almost as long as Honey in a Fridge (60 days compared to Honey's 80 days).
And what I noticed on wiki, (assuming it's correct) roasted tomatoes last 4 days LONGER than raw tomatoes, so similar to roasting Monster Meat to preserve it's lifespan, tomatoes should be roasted ASAP after harvest.

    • @JazzysGames

Yeah but because of the nutrient cap on farm plots you'd want to add half at the beginning, then the other half a couple cycles later.
