  • The New York 1889 tournament effectively became the first Candidates tournament as the winner gained the right to challenge World Chess Champion, Wilhelm Steinitz, for his crown. Max Weiss was one of the two winners, but he lost this game, a brilliancy prize victory by Irish Champion, William Pollock.

    I think it was a good choice to do a top 15 for a century. Sparser historical records and less polished play would make it quite difficult I would assume.
    Edit: a new favourite of mine! Very glad I got to see it!

    That finish reminds me a lot of Liren vs Jinshi. What an amazing game, and if this is #15, I can't wait to see what's after
