If Brian hadn't continued filming this horror, the public would not have seen how horrendous and rapidly this spread. The fire department has used this as a valuable learning tool for the firefighters and for the rest of us. Never again will I not know every exit and to locate myself near an exit and to be always aware of danger. He did a service

People just tried to blame him because he had a camera and was a reporter, to me it looked like he moped faster than lot of the other people and what about other people who hindered others or didn't help, why should only he be blamed and charged I don't get it, specially as it seemed he moved as fast as he could and the footage is very important for safety too, I think it has saved lives.

      Also 100% agree.
The irony of the entire incident should be the reason he was there to film in the first place. He was LITERALLY doing his job that night.
The original video is not a watch for everyone but those in medical, rescue, firefighters, hell even club goers should see it to understand it fully.
Plus - it truly shows you he did not get in anyone's way - he was being pushed out by the crowd.

My friend who was there now is an advocate for sprinkler systems which this club should have had. I had gone to this bar before and knew it was a disaster waiting to happen. It was about the money not the safety. I’m still angry. I lost many loved ones. This was a needless tragedy. It never had to happen.

Shouldn’t Brian Butler have received a Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News? He captured an event extremely rare and extremely valuable. All the historic fire disasters of the last century do not have actual real time footage of the origin of the fire and the reaction of victims. Butler’s footage was invaluable for investigating the fire, fire prevention techniques and legal discovery which Butler and his station were targets of in the following years.
He did exactly what one should do during a fire. Calmly leave the venue and his most important role outside was not trying to provide hopeless aid but to document the carnage for experts like nobody present could do.

Funny how the only time the main stream media tells the truth is in a rare event when they actually capture it on live TV. Other than this instance, we all have been lied to for decades and continue to be. Everything you think you know in life is wrong, thanks to the media who never tell any truth and the public school systems. 2020 proves it.

In the very late 90's or the year 2000 I met Jack Russell. I was working in the Converse Factory Store here in Tulsa, OK. at the time, I was in management. Great White was playing in Tulsa on this day and he came into the store looking at stuff, saying he was a Converse endorser and wanted to get some stuff. We had a setup for that, everyone had a code that designated who they were and in order to get free merchandise we had to have that code to put into the registers to track the product. Well, I told him that and he kept repeating that he was an endorser. Didn't pull the "do you know who I am" card but I had to tell him 4-5 times that if you just get that code we'll be happy to give you whatever you want. He and whoever he was with on that day said they'd be back and he'd get his code. He left empty handed and we never heard from him again. So yeah, he was a useless piece of crap long before this.

There is a lot of stuff in this video that doesn't match other accounts, or the official reports from the grand jury testimony and the NIST report. The number of people in the club is debated, with the final number closer to 350, based on the number of people who participated in the civil lawsuits and made reports to the police and grand jury. There is also evidence that Great White's manager used pyro at other venues, without even asking for permission. I can't remember where I saw it, but there is a copy of the order form used to get the foam for the walls, it says "sound foam," which by industry standard is fire-retardant. The foam that was delivered was standard packing crate foam, and without the technical knowledge to know the difference, the owners didn't know it was the wrong thing. The fire marshal also approved it after it was installed. There is a lot in this case that was negligent, but none of the people involved had any intention to harm anyone. They were just stupid.

I've been thinking about this event a lot over the years and i've been wondering about something lately : would it be worse if it happened today with so many people literally glued to their phones all the time as if their lives depended on it? Taking selfies before attempting to walk out during the crucial first seconds ("Joe take a picture" x 50) ? (for the record, i'm typing this from a laptop). It's like having a filtered version of reality. I wonder if people's reaction to the fire would have been even slower than in 2003...

When this happened, footage of Butler's film was shown on TV. When the fire started he spoke and he said something like "This is dangerous!" I believe he spoke as you saw the film (or him actually) glide over to the part of the room to exit. Later on this was audio was not heard on the film anymore. A friend remarked on it many times that his voice was removed from the film. I have watched many videos of this fire and can't find his voice at the point the fire begins. I wonder why it was removed? But anyway, his instincts were very much correct . . . over alot of people that surprisingly didn't react like he did. Amazing!

That first portion of the Butler video, prior to the fire, is still on YT minus it's audio. Not every person shown at the stage died however. Several who were right at the stage survived because they escaped thru broken atrium windows, the kitchen exit across the bar, or even thru the windows next to the main entrance. All were burned, some severely, in addition to other injuries. The key was avoiding the deathtrap in the hallway leading to the front entrance, and luck.

Look at the picture, he’s the guy with the cigarette in his mouth, he’s already looking toward the people. Btw, his wife was standing there when the pyro went off. I really enjoyed this podcast. I appreciate the detail and your insights. There is an excellent video on CZcams where John Barylick (one of the attorneys for the victims) gives a presentation to a group of other Tort law attorneys and fire officials from varying counties. One of the things that shocked me the most was learning that the exact same building (without any modifications or expansions) went from a maximum occupancy of 50-60 when it was a restaurant, to over 200 once it became a bar, to over 300 when the owner who eventually sold to the Derderians was trying to sell it, to over 400 once the Derderians bought it. Like, how does that even work??? Fire and inspecting officials were definitely partially at fault here, but were not held responsible. Soaring occupancy numbers, turning a blind eye to the building not being retrofitted with a sprinkler system, and "not noticing" the over 900 square feet of foam on the walls and ceiling definitely created a perfect storm for a disaster. I find this fire fascinating because any of us could be in the same situation at any time. Thank you for the video!

The authoritative source on this fire is the book Killer Show by John Barylick, the lead prosecutor who represented the victims and their families. It contains a few inaccuracies but for the most part covers everything in this podcast and more.

I lived in RI and was a teenager when it happened. I taught religious education to kids and they were so afraid. They knew people and were directly effect. I remember stressing it doesn't matter what religion someone was, because so many kids were scared their friend's parents were going to hell. I was not going to have that these were six ans seven year olds. We spent our class talking about fire safety. I was teaching for community service for my school, and let me tell you, religion was much less important than helping those kids. We talked about their feelings. My question is what made the manager think he was qualified to use pyro. Yes they owned the product used..they have used pyrotechnics for other gigs but they had used a licensed technician! The items used were not made for indoor use,and were too long a burn time and the wrong height. They are labeled for safety with the 2x the height needed and the time of burn for safety! If it burns 6 ft high it is labeled 12ft x the amount of time it burns! So there definitely is negligence here in a very clear and precise way! They are also labeled with if it is for indoor or outdoor use !. Even if a tech wasn't hired for the show ( we don't shoot without permits and insurance!) But we also will give a warning ⚠️ of what is NOT TO BE USED INDOORS,as techs most of us know and may even in some cases tell a tour or stage manager what can be used and how to read the product, also what immediate dangers we see here! ( foam sound insulation, curtains, banners, artificial trees or plants etc) even how to check firefighting equipment and how many "dedicated fire watch" employees are going to be needed for safety.
But to ignore the need for space that is clearly labeled by the MANUFACTURER to make these items "idiot proof" AND SAFE..WORLD WIDE..( AND THAT DID TAKE MANY MANY YEARS TO GAIN TRUST...
truly..Truly! ...TRULY .. TAKES A VERY SPECIAL AND SPECIFIC KIND OF STUPID IGNORANT AND SELFISH PERSON . THIS ACT OF FOOLISH NOT ONLY CAUSED PROPERTY DAMAGE,LOST LIVES,LOSS OF TRUST TO THE WORLDWIDE PUBLIC, BUT ALSO TO ME AND OTHER TECHNICIANS AND PYROTECHNIC COMPANIES. 9/11 HURT OUR INDUSTRY, over 50 companies in USA went under.. and now this 1 man,has me starving for over a year.. honestly! I'm not able to eat daily! AND I've no way of knowing if or when ill get work. There's not even insurance here to feed us or help with rent ,🙏 I'll survive, but damn you dude!

I in no way a trying to lessen the lives lost. I just wanted to point out the other half from a local pyro technician position..ive done gigs like this, and walked away from some knowing and warning what I said here..and instructed why a venue was not suitable for That product that a band had. Often a quantity is purchased for use as it is cheaper than just 1 item at a time plus haz mat shipping. So teaching people how to read a labeled gerb..START WITH
      "FOR PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY"
,! That is for everyone's attention and safety! Then the other label info..if you don't get it then take a picture and DM A TECH OR PYRO COMPANY,EVEN PLEASE USE THE PHONE NUMBER ON THE ITEM..IT CAN BE DIALED 24/7. WE WANT SUCCESSFUL SHOWS. ACCIDENTS HURT EVERYONE. IF ANYONE WANTS TO LEARN THE PROPER WAY TO USE FX THEN HMU OR CALL A PYRO COMPANY NEAR YOU FOR TRAINING SCHEDULES. BUT ILL HELP ANYONE TO BE SAFE.. JUST BECAUSE I MAKE IT LOOK VERY EASY..I AM BRINGING 40 YEARS PLUS OF PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH ME. AND MY LICENSES FOR INDOOR AND OUTDOOR FX..AND HIGH ALTITUDE FIREWORKS. New sub then, I was the first to mention the Ty Longley thing.
Anyway. If you listen to the footage with decent earbuds, you can hear about 10 minutes in, a guy in the parking lot screaming for Bridget. He does this over the course of 7 min.
Then he says what would ultimately be true.
Bridget no, Bridget fuckin burned up in the building.
She hurried to the bathroom just 45 seconds before the fire ignited with a friend. When they realized the mayhem that was occuring they both called 911. They stayed in the Ladies room. They died as the room filled with smoke as the fire took hold of the ceiling end to end within 6 minutes of ignition.
    They were later found unrecognizable.
Both young. Long long lives ahead of them. I believe 21 & 23?

First time listening. I cannot label myself as an SNF (station nightclub fire) expert but I have followed the event for years.
You've got the gist of it however there are several inconsistencies.
One is a long time internet rumor so I cannot wholely fault you. The Ty Longley incident.
Ty leaped from the stage as did the band and crew, but he didn't exit.
Ty ran over to his friends who were in the clubs atrium or the "greenhouse". In the matter of moments he was overcome by the toxic gasses.
I think you should revisit this topic at a later date once you complete your other shows. I could lead you to a dozen sources for research including a FOIA claim in which the AG released 80% of the case files, witness testimony etc.
Good luck with the podcast. I'm going to sub.

Trading live shows in the internet's infancy was huge. The second Thing WAS available until a lawsuit occured. The Hi-Def version of the tape. Where you can see everything clear as day. It was available online from 2003-2006. Now we get the compressed version. I have in my possession the 21 min version. Pre show and fire.
I heard the flashover was so powerful that it roared from the point of ignition to the rear exits lighting everything in its way ablaze. Including the heads of people in the way.
The 7 min pre show interviews with the crowd adds to the horror and it becomes a personal experience. You become part of it if that makes sense.

So I did some research about Ty Longley and there's this rumor that has been going on for 17 years now. I don't blame you for this but this was it.
Ty Longley leaped into the stage but didn't exit yet. He went into his bandmates, Jack Russell and another band member. Jack Russell and the other band member barely escaped alive but not before inhaling smoke (smoke inhalation).
Ty Longley was about to go but the smoke got up to him and he was killed by smoke inhalation just 25 seconds before the fire got up to his body and burned him alive. The falsely rumor is that he forgot his guitar when he leaped off the stage and went to the exit so he went back but got killed by the smoke. Half of the story is true but he didn't went to the exit nor did he forgot his guitar. There is some dark footage that I don't want to show you that shows that he had his guitar before his death. But ya I just wanted to tell you. It's ok for the errors and I don't know if someone else told you but sorry for correcting you i just wanted to let you know about the false rumor. Not your fault by the way. 2 of my friends went to the night club fire when I used to live in Rhode Island and only one survived. My other friend died. RIP Jack. My other friend claimed to have seen Ty Longley war the smoke with his guitar and filmed him. I have the footage today but me and my friend promised to never two it to anyone because its extremely sad and I will never forget my other friend. There was also many other footage from the fire that caught Ty Longley with a guitar and you can try to check them out later on. Anyways bro have a good day bye! You will be remember Jack!

Boiling this down to a simple accident caused by a series of dumb mistakes and ranting about the justice system... if you get burnt in a completely avoidable fire and have to live with the consequences for the rest of your life... then maybe you can have an opinion on that. Every person that was responsible for a code violation knew or should have known this would happen. Especially in 2003 when this has happened so many times in the past. If the people responsible for nightclub fire deaths had been given harsher legal punishments in the past then maybe the people responsible for the Station fire would have taken safety more seriously. People slack when they know there's no consequences.

I have a bachelors and a masters degree in Criminal Justice and Criminology. Our justice system is far from perfect. However I did study restorative justice. So the concept is being taught in that program. Well it was in mine, but I’m sure it is being taught in many other school’s programs as well. There are many cases in which restorative justice seems very appropriate, like this one. Another good example is the Hyatt regency skywalk disaster, which took place in my hometown of Kansas City, MO: although I was not born yet I know all about it because my parents already lived there, and I had some other family in the area. It affected everyone in the city. Almost everyone knew someone who was so her killed or injured. One of the engineers felt so horrible. He admitted guilt and made a point in teaching the rest of his career so it would never happen again. And just like the footage of this video is shown to all firefighters in training, the Hyatt disaster is used in every engineering class today. Well at least in structural engineering. However I do believe there are people who have to be locked up. There are different theories that are offers as a reason for incarceration. One of them is incapacitation. Some people(mostly murders and child sexual predators) have to be incarcerated for the public’s safety. Their is way to high of a risk for recidivism. A great example of this is Ted Buddy. Ted Bundy escaped from prison twice. The second time he murdered 3 women and attempted to murder 3 more women. Those were the only crimes he would ever be charged for because they didn’t end up finding many of the other bodies till much later. He also ended up confessing to murders that they never found bodies for. These are the kind of people that have to be locked up forever. You see it’s not a punishment thing. In that case it’s a incapacitating thing because of such high risk for recidivism. Otherwise yes in many cases going about the restorative justice route is a good idea.

And that’s what the station did as well. I did get desert moon stuck in my head I don’t know why but it happened, I did watch the music video as in the original one and I saw so many people commented about The tragedy and even people were quoting Jack Russell in that and I also commented about the negligence when I came to the fireworks.
