    My DD1 QR made the same rattling noise that yours did. Then someone on Reddit recommended placing a M8 washer on the head of the QR retaining screw. This made the QR rock solid and improved FFB!

      Hi, I also have the Trak Racer TR8 Pro tubular rig and run the Moza R9 / GS wheel with it. I invert the integrated monitor stand and mount a 34 ultra wide curved screen on it. Im exploring upgrading to either a DD1 or Asetek Invicta wheel and my worry is that these wheel bases will be too big for the mount and I'll have to push the screen back to accommodate, i.e the monitor wont site on top of the wheel base. Can you shed any light, any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

    Great video Danny. Always enjoy listening to your point of view even though a dd1 is not something on my radar.
    I went from a g29 to a simucube pro. Over a year later and I'm still amazed how flawlessly it performs.
    Not to be negative, but I cannot believe fanatec has never improved the quick release. You could argue they didn't need to as there used to be no competition in their sector however 2023 is a different world. With moza, simmagic and others on the block it does seem foolish to still not be doing anything about it.
    In my case, I'm so glad I skipped the fanatec purchase and went straight to simucube. The qr really was something that put me off.

    • @dannyleeracing
      @dannyleeracing  Před rokem +2

      Thanks man - I completely agree about the quick release, I think they've taken far, far, faaaaar too long to release an improved version and it's cost them a lot of customers just because the systems on other brands is better. In this highly competitive climate, any 'reasons not to buy' carry a lot more weight than 'reasons to buy' and I think the QR is the biggest 'reason not to buy'

      @alecmillea4539 Před 11 měsíci

      From the reviews I’ve seen it seems that the R21 from Moza is at least equivalent to the dd1 if not better. It’s often compared to the sc2 pro and simagic alpha u in terms of power and responsiveness. Honestly even without already having the Moza wheels I would recommend the R21 over a dd1.

      @@alecmillea4539I have an alpha u and was seriously considering getting the regular alpha or even the mini but I’m glad I didn’t. I figured the extra torque would just be a waste but it’s great to have that extra power in reserve for added responsiveness and those peaks when you hit things like curbs. The Simagic and Moza quick releases are light years better than the Fanatec QR and make for a much better experience overall

    • @dannyleeracing
      @dannyleeracing  Před rokem +1

      The Prime's in storage for now, I've got a Prime Lite because GT Omega sent one for review so I could check it out, otherwise I'd still be on the full Prime. The Prime Lite is awesome for the money, the pedal tray has the same issues that the original pre-upgrade Prime had (some flex if you're using pedals without a baseplate to spread the load, and limited side-to-side positioning) but otherwise it's decent! I'm working on a review now that the DD1's done, but in a nutshell the Prime Lite is really good for the money and if it was the last rig you ever had you'd be totally happy, but the Prime will always be the better, stronger, more capable option if you can stretch to it, especially if you're going to want integrated monitors. Hopefully can elaborate more in the video coming soon.

      @@stevestratas5345 Based on that - I'm going to be testing the GT Omega Titan soon. From a portability standpoint, as it's easy to split it into two and tear down if needed - it could be ideal for what you need. It won't be AS firm as the Prime Lite, but it does look genuinely sturdy from what I experienced during assembly.
      If you just mean portability as in moving it around the room frequently, then castors would do the trick - I had my full PRIME on castors so I could wheel it in/out of the corner to fit/disassemble things!

      Nah man, you don't have to feel that way - it's not a competition and it isn't even very representative, just a matter of preference and proportion, doesn't matter what the FFB amount is if it suits you nicely and lets you feel what's happening. If anyone's actually running 100% it's usually just for a laugh, or not for very long. The only point I'm making is that 90% is all I possibly need using a large-ish steering wheel, and there's still more to spare!

      You might be tempted to use linearity mode on the DD1 also but that compresses the FFB I believe and reduces the strength of bigger bumps so I find it’s best to leave linearity off to gain back the strength and dynamic range, hope that helps…. @jinx20001 I can confirm what you saying. Currently I run 65 gain and 62 on my dd1and see a short red clip on eau rouge at spa. It is the only spot and only track that I ran into clipping. I leave it at 65 because other than eau rouge I get more ffb detail for the rest of the track. Also I have it on those number so when I go through mentioned corner I get 13 nm peak force.

    Having had a DD1 then a simucube 2 and now a asetek invicta aswell as others previously, i can say for sure the QR isn't the only downside to the DD1, the motor is in need of a hardware upgrade in my opinion, compared to most other modern DD's on the market today the DD1 is quite notchy, not obtrusively so but you can absolutely turn that wheel slowly and feel the steps which for me at that price is not acceptable, what car on planet earth feels like that? its a complete immersion breaker for me and there is no way to tune it out, its the outrunner motor they used in the DD1 and its inherent flaw, ive not had a csl DD but apparently that notchy feeling improved somewhat, likely down to the fact they used a standard servo, when i went to the simucube i was completely blown away by just that one small difference alone, the motor is completely smooth on rotation just as a car should be.
    I also do not agree about smaller wheels not getting the most out of the wheelbase, larger heavier wheels have a natural damping effect on the feedback, smaller wheels are far more lively, much more detail comes through ( more of that notchy feeling aswell sadly ) but ofcourse your personal ability to control the smaller wheel is more difficult and im sure thats what you were getting at.
    I can see why anybody would be excited by getting a DD1 if its their first DD though, i still think it stands up there as one of the DD's that gives you a real DD experience, so many that are releasing these days are watered down low power motors which lose a lot of the impact a DD brings to the table, all to appeal to casual racers who want to get in on the DD game but they are really not getting the whole story with a moza R5 for example.

      Awesome insights, thank you for commenting, appreciate the time!
      I can't feel any notchiness or cogging in the DD1, though, as that was one thing that did put me off some time back and made me settle with the CSL DD. When was the last time you had your hands on one? Apparently the 2022 firmware upgrade was absolutely revolutionary!
      I agree about DD's now being too broad an umbrella term. It's awesome that the lower end has been brought aboard the DD train, but now it's more of a low-mid-high tiering than a non-DD and DD tiering.

      I love how people always comment on the "notchyness' of the DD1. Who cares what it feels like when it's off? You're putting tons of power through a metal rod, essentially, who cares if it's not buttery smooth when off?

      @@dannyleeracing my last hands on with a DD1 was about a year ago, actually owning one was about 2 years ago because thats when i sold it to get the simucube 2 and now im waiting on my asetek invicta order to come in so not had hands on with that yet.
      its hard to really understand what i mean when i say ''notchy'' im sure... its one of those things where if you lay your hands on a simucube you will be like '' ahh i see'', you know what i mean? my best example would be to just say this, turn the motor off and turn the wheel very slowly and you will notice its completely free without any friction and steps, obviously not realistic because there is no friction, but it will feel completely smooth, then turn it on and turn the wheel slowly, ofcourse you will now have friction but as you turn very slowly you can feel what feels like steps in the magnets, very small steps... with the simucube you get all that smoothness like the fanatec when its off but all the friction you would expect like the fanatec when its on... if that makes any kind of sense lol its an eye opener.
      my problem with the low end DD's is they often make sacrifices that are not in the spirit of a DD, for example the moza R5/R9 uses 15bit encoders, lowest on the market for a DD i believe, its exactly half of what the fanatec is using which is 16 bit, literally half the resolution of a fanatec base. Simucube and asetek use 22 bit encoders... now we are not machines so im under no illusion that we can detect reliably those kind of high resolutions but its what a DD is all about right? high power, high precision and great build quality, yeh... for me the lower end stuff waters it down a bit much.
      thanks for the video and reply dude.

      @@mattymatte6289 well obviously you have not used a DD1 then have you because the DD1 is completely utterly smooth when its off... the notchiness is when its on haha. So go ahead and name me a car that when you turn the steering wheel you can count small steps in the wheel? ill wait... it does not happen, its a completely smooth hydraulic system and the DD1 does not replicate that, it may not be important to some people, its important to me. i often hear people say '' you forget about it when you actually drive ''... well at over £1000 i dont want to forget about it bro, i want it to feel like a car when driving, when stationary, when going fast or going slow, its got one job to do. If your DD1 is notchy when its off then id suggest it has a problem and you need to speak to fanatec... ive had one, i know exactly how it feels.

    I am waiting for a new version of CSL DD 13nm-15nm from Fanatec. China is not sleeping and MOZA and Simagic have released their 12-15nm versions. CSL DD 8nm good base!!! But as soon as you use the Maclaren steering wheel, this base becomes completely useless. DD1 - DD2 database data is needed by a minority. Most of all, bloggers need them for advertising. An ordinary user needs no more than 13-15 nm. Well, the motors of Simagic and Simcub and MOZA are already superior to Fanatec DD today. In the same Fanatec csl dd pro 8nm, in the off state, the magnetic field is very strongly felt on the wheels of Formula and Esports. And this is because of the structure of the magnets. Since the base uses no more than 75 watts and 2 amps. 180 watt power supply is not really needed. For the CSL DD, 100 watts is enough, which is why Fanatec had to build their own motor. And add a huge amount of mognites. Because of what, in the off state, we feel strong steps when turning the steering wheel.

The best way to slice it is to remember that if people start bending the truth then they won't last for very long before they're called out, and you only need check the comments - sim racing is full of knowledgeable people so nobody can hide from the facts. All of us reviewers need to make sure we only say things we stand by, or we will totally undermine ourselves and ruin our reputation, which is the most valuable thing we can have.
