  • My third-gen 2022 Kawasaki KLR 650 Adventure is a pretty great motorcycle. I've spent a few months with it now and gone on quite a few trips and adventures, and I feel pretty comfortable at this point sharing some of my favorite things about the all new 2022 Kawasaki KLR 650.
    First, 2022 KLR 650 is an insane value. It's the cheapest way to get out and adventure on a new motorcycle right away. The KLR 650 Adventure package in particular has basically everything you could need to jump on the bike and go on your first adventure motorcycle trip right away.
    Second, it's a heavy bike, but it doesn't feel like one. As I mentioned in my 2022 KLR 650 review, the bike feels easy to manhandle around and maneuver in tight spaces on uneven terrain. I feel very comfortable taking my KLR 650 off road into unknown territory, knowing that if I come across a downed tree or blocked road, I'll be able to turn it around and continue on my motorcycle camping trip or whatever.
    Third, I love that the KLR 650 is very easy to ride. It's got a slow, smooth power delivery and is very beginner friendly and confidence inspiring.
    Fourth, it's very comfortable. From the ergonomics to the seat cushion, this is a bike that you can ride comfortably for a very long period of time and it has a ton of options for adjusting or shifting your riding position to alleviate discomfort.
    Fifth and most importantly, the Kawasaki KLR 650 is one of the most versatile and capable bikes ever made. It is a true jack of all trades. It does everything you could want it to do, just don't expect it to do it quickly or as comfortably as some other more purpose-built bikes.

    On Saturday bought my wife her first real learner bike. All on her own she picked the KLX 300 supermoto and I freaking love it. I won't give up my KLR for one but that's a great little bike

      I actually traded up from the KLX 300 SM to the KLR650. I weigh about 210 and the super Moto got me up to speed no problem, I just needed a little more range and rack space for moto-camping. Have fun and "let the good times roll!"

    I bought my 2014 KLR650 new, this is my 7th on/off motorcycle in about a 50 year riding run. I immediately began modifications, seat concepts step seat, full exhaust from the head back, re jetting, windshield, bags, on my 5th set of tires, and more. Generally I love this bike but not without criticism, however none of my bikes have been perfect after 8 years of owning the KLR I am ready for a change but every time I ride I realize that my KLR does so much right that I’m in for the long term with this bike. As I am now an “old man”, I have swapped my 80/20 knobbies for 50/50 tires, the KLR is too heavy now for me to pick up if I dump in the woods so my mountain bike is my woods ride now for the tough stuff.
    Pretty sure my 2014 is my last bike, I will hope to ride this into my 70’s reaching for the nonexistent 6th gear for years to come.

    My son and i both bought a KLR 650, mine the khaki and his the lava orange! We both love these bikes, I just hit my first 1000 miles, my son rides when he can but we love the father son rides we do together (mostly why we bought them) we can't wait to get out and explore and pack on some miles on out new bikes!

    I’ve always admired the KLRs since they came out but never owned one until very recently. But it is by far my favorite bike I’ve ever owned . I always hear people say they are heavy and underpowered. But I didn’t buy it to hill climb or cruise down the interstate. For what it was built to do I feel it’s about as good as it gets, the power is there any time I need it I’ve never thought dang I wish it had more power and with a 16 tooth front sprocket it cruises at 65-70 mph without a problem. I guess it’s what your into but for me it is the perfect all around bike for highway,plus trail adventure riding. And if there are things about it you wish to change the aftermarket products for this bike are limitless

    My KLR and I have been together for almost a year now. I watched this video to find something good to appreciate about it. This is the fourth bike I’ve owned in 60 years. And I’m having trouble loving it. Example: I’m laying in bed with two injured knees. Bike slide out from under me on a wet clay road, twice pinned each leg under bike. No scratches on motorcycle ,just injured medial ligaments on each knee. Fortunately, had help lifting machine on wet slippery mud with injuries. Tire treads filled with mud and lost traction.

      If you're still running stock tires then that's your problem. Put a Mitas e07 up front, a K60 Scout out back.

    I picked up an 08 model last year and riding it has become one of those things I look forward to. One of the things I noticed the very most, that I don’t hear a lot of is how this thing loves dirt and gravel roads at higher speeds. Even at 80 and 90mph while cruising open roads, it just glides like it’s floating, it’s that smooth.

    Thanks for sharing. I drive a VTX 1800 but just bought an 09 KLR 650 and am planning on giving some North Georgia mountain dirt roads a try. Maybe this weekend if I get the new rear tire on in time.

    Owning a HD Ultra for the last 17 years and while still keeping the ultra, loosing 600 pounds of bike will be different in riding. I will be getting my KLR 650 adventure on the 16th. Fuel and travel are the biggest things on my deciding factor. I will ramp haul it behind our RV while also towing out 2016 Jeep Rubicon. So, I am new to the KLR groups and have watched many videos on them. thank you for all your input and videos on the subject of the new KLR 650 Adventure. We are really looking forward to more adventure and back to some off road travel on two wheels.

    I agree with everything he has said. I have owned 2 older KLRs and my new 2022 KLR is the best of all. Jack of all trades and master of none. There are 3 basic qualities in motorcycles: Fast, Good, Cheap: pick 2

    Ok, Dork’s videos about the Klr are great. I just sold my 53 rd motorcycle since the age of 15. I ‘m 75 & still riding. The 2008 klr 650 with 104, 000 miles. Never broken down. Had valves adjusted at 75,000 & the mechanic said it really did not need it. Tricking out my 2011 klr 650 now. It has 3,700 miles on it. Love my pc 800 for long distance riding. I ride it to the Oregon border from the central Sierras, 12 1/2 hours.650 is a loyal mule, never breaks down & always keeps going with a lot of extras like progressives rear shock, progressive fork springs, jetted out, changed out the sprockets. cut the baffle out for noise to keep cattle & deer out of my way in the mountains. Crash bar, cruising pegs, Tusk panniers, large pelican box on the rear & changed out the dam oem petcock with Eagle Mikes.I am planing to buy the 2024 Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 dual sport if reviews are good.

    Love your videos on the KLR the pros and cons.. I bought a KLR 10 months ago ..is from 2016 with 3400 miles … changed the windshield cause is useless.. now with a much higher windshield long trips and highway riding is much more comfortable.. is a great versatile bike but as you said not the best at anything..I loved it and want to keep it but definitely have my eye on other bikes like BMW GS and the Triumph Tiger.. also Ducati Multistrada v4 !!!

    So! I was so close to getting a KLR but I found a badass used 2014 V-strom 1000 for cheaper than a brand new klr and it already had the metal skid plate, crash guards, side cases, top case. all the stuff you needed to go on adventures so I ended up going that route and loved it ever since.

    I got a 23 Adventure, and love it. It was ready out of the box. All I’ll add for now is a pair of Bark Buster handguards and a good crash cage...oh yeah, and a real skid plate, since the ground clearance is lower than my Sporty and FXRS

    I think the bike is pretty sweet. Evolving from a crf250l (when I started watching you), then to a Tiger, and now on my favorite, an F850gs… i completely agree, communities are so vastly different. I would love to se you test out a r1200gs with some nice tires on it. I rode one, and it was an experience to say the least. While my pocketbook couldn’t afford a new one, it would be nice to see you on something heavy again 😀

    Interesting the "Things I Hate" has %15-%20 higher viewership. I wonder why people are attracted to negativity? Or perhaps the "Hated" things reach further because dislikes could hypothetically be a safety concern to some? I digress.

    I’ve a ‘93 KLR600 which was my first big bike back in the nineties. I regretted selling it so much that I bought a same year one 6•years ago. It was in a relatively good state but I had the engine rebuilt, repainted it the same color as my old one and made some modifications. I have other bikes in my garage but I love this bike so much. So easy to ride and so light (for a street bike, it’s also considerably lighter than the latest 650). I’ll never sell this one…

    Sounds like a really great bike and it reminds me of my old f650gs single. Great for beginners but personally I would recommend and pick something with ABS. As a beginner you will get a feel for conditions of the road, surface and temps when it comes to breaking with ABS on the bike. The bike will correct you if you brake to hard. No ABS and 70% of the braking power comes from the front wheel, the front locks up and you will loose it.
    One thing I like about all road's is the weight balance. You didn't mention it in the video but it's important imo for bike control. Bmw gs's are very nose heavy. More weight on the front and if the surface (on- or offroad) gets slippery, the rear tire will let you know and starts sliding first and you feel what the bike is doing. And you can correct it. You can have some real fun with a 800gs and even max it in the rain. It's so forgiving.

    What amazed me is that Kawasaki dealers aren't all scum, they actually have stock, and will just sell you a motorcycle. Picking mine up next week, God willing.

    I currently have a Harley Davidson Sportster and lately I've been kind of getting the off-road bug. I want to go explore and have adventures off the beaten path so to speak in. This seems like the best bike to do it with. One day. I want to ride the entirety of route 66 to the Santa Monica Pier, making little side quests along the way. Then hit the Grand canyon on the way back and maybe explore some other natural landscapes

    The more I look around the more I think this might be the one I need for my first motorcycle. This would be great for exploring the Cascades in Oregon or heading to the coast. So many possibilities when you live in the Willamette Valley.
    Now I need to decide on used vs new.

    Just took home the adventure model last week. No complaints so far. It's doesn't get up and go like my Ninja 650 but that's to be expected.

    Great video, was on the fence about buying one. But the long distance comfort sold me, I'm from Northern wv and I was looking for a reasonably priced dual sport that I could take a 3 or 4 hr trip and not feel like I rode a 2x4 for a month.

    I bought a klr new in 2018 and it’s been the best bike I’ve ever owned. Rip it off-road like a dirt bike or cruise for hours hundreds of miles on the interstate or back highways. Damn near indestructible and hasn’t let me down yet. If I had the cash I’d add a new 3rd gen to the garage, not in the card rn.

    PS; the adventure S is a couple inches lower, for those with 30 and less inseams. I have 32” and the regular Adventure just lets me put my feet down.

    Great Vid my friend! I already have 2 bikes and may want to get rid of one I don't ride often enough. In place this 2022 KLR would probably be perfect for hauling in the Toy-hauler, on trips and all the above!
    May just sell my 2020 Yamaha V-Max w/1,500 miles on it.? My other bike is a X-Max scooter that my wife is willing to ride on, so If she would ride on the KLR??? I could sell the X-Max and keep the V-Max. Having a bike that has dual-purpose just makes sense for my riding needs. Thanks again for a great video!

    Thinking of replacing my XR 600 with the new KLR. Same type of riding, mostly BDR's and moto camping. I have a KTM 300 for real off road riding, but that's all you can do on it. Seems like a good bike to explore with and can still do some real trails on it. 460 lbs though.....

    I almost bought a KLR650 last year but held off. I ride a different bike now but for some reason love your videos about riding, camping and the KLR 650. You mentioned the great value of this bike. I’m interested to know what adventure bike (or other type) you would get if money wasn’t an obstacle (as it is for most of us)? Would you be a BMW 1250gs rider? Multistrada? Keep up the great content!

    I recently picked up an '05 KLR650, but honestly, the great price I paid was the main criteria. For the vertically challenged the DR650 and F650 appear to be better choices. KLR 416 lbs is ~60lbs more wet weight than the DR650 357 lbs, and the F650 is 421 lbs wet weight.

      I just put a Leo Vince on my '17. Huge improvement over the stock boat anchor.
      Definitely noticed the boost in power and it sounds so much better.

    I almost purchased a 2nd Gen in 2018 and kicked myself after I found out Kawasaki discontinued the model. Fast forward 4 years and I still do not own or ever ridden a KLR 650. I’m on the fence of getting one because the dealer is marking up his bikes. I live in Interior Alaska so it’s not like I can go to another dealer in next town over. Should I be willing to pay $8K for an ABS KLR650 when that is over $1300 above MSRP? I love Alaska but it really pisses me off when the dealers attempt to take advantage of the situation.     Traded in my 1200 Sporster for a gen two KLR then traded the KLR for a Verses 1000 then back to another gen two KLR. Traded the KLR for 2010 Yamaha Tracer. And agin to another gen two KLR to 2021 Kawasaki rs900cafe. Sold it and agin I know have a 2022 KLR Adventure. All the other fast sexy bikes did not scratch my itch. It's more fun to go fast on a slow bike than it is to go slow on a fast bike

    I’m wondering how you would compare the KLR against the Tenere700? I know the T7 is a little more money and it does have some added features not found on the KLR but it also seems to be slightly more off road oriented like a dual sport on steroids. Since you have experience with the Africa Twin I thought I would get your take as I have heard others say the T7 is sort of like riding a smaller Africa Twin. Thanks for the videos (this one and the five dislikes). It’s great to hear peoples perspectives. ✌️

    The KLR650 is probably going to be my first bike because every downside seems to be a positive for a beginner or relies on having ridden other bikes to have a point of reference.

    I was Wondering the difference between the two, I watched several of your comparison, KLR or DRZ 400, You Blew the Lid, Off Everything I would have asked. For me I'm Familiar with both of them in my time, I don't ride much anymore, I wanted dependable bike and ride Logging roads Deer hunting, lm thinking DRZ 400 cause of the weight, when you think Suzuki might update.     Thanks for taking down your link to Happy Trails. I ordered the center stand when their website indicated there were 4 in inventory, then two days later they send me an email stating they "Hope" to get my order processed in 6 to 7 weeks. You did the right thing by taking down their link. I am disappointed with them to say the least.

    How would you compare the off-road capability between the KLR and the Africa Twin? Yes, I have an agenda with this question - I personally believe that the Africa Twin is the best all-rounder out there. In my opinion, the only area where the KLR beats the AT is on price.

    Would you suggest putting a slip on exhaust on your klr650? Do you think that would help throttle response at all or just a waste?

    I think the KLR 650 is the most reliable motorcicle in the world, but just the time will say if the electronic fuel injection will be as good (reliable) as the carburator. For example, in my 990 ADV the secondary butterfly servomotor (air pass) fails and it isn't a replacement, i have to buy ALL the throttle body and that is not an option for me ($$$). I had to remove these butterfly.

    the klr650 is what it is, your lucky in the states, here in the u.k we do not get it, or even the klx300, i run 3 bikes, and ideally i would have my zzr1400 , zx14r for those in the states, and a klr650 and a klx300sm, instead i had to opt for a tenere700 and a husqvarna 701sm, could be argued better bikes, but at a real premium in price, moral of the story being, be grateful you live in the states and can fill your garage with great bikes at a real bargain price, the u.k and europe sucks for choice in reasonably priced bikes.

    Question for you experienced KLR riders including the Dork: How much should I worry about a top speed of 65 mph on the freeway? I'm a new rider with no experience. Western states with big freeways and 80mph limits. I worry that I would always have tailgaters and never be able to accelerate into the open spaces in traffic. Can I avoid freeways? Probably not on adventure trips with 3 to 5 hours of freeway between camps in Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Arizona, and Wyoming. Not to mention an urban commute. All thoughts welcome. Thanks.

    You should get a CRF450RL next. It has all the stuff thy KLR doesn't and it's 100lbs lighter and more fun ;)
    I love mine and can go places bigger bikes can't but I can still do 75mph on the freeway when needed

      @@DorkintheRoad they do have a tiny issue. I spent 60.00 on a throttle tamer and it fixed the issue.
      You can also reprogram the ecu or do a vortex but those are far more expensive.
      I'll be driving thru your area in a week if you wanna do a quick ride.

    I have a 2016 with 2 inch lowering links. 3 inch lower than a gen 1. And if you only put 4 gallons in your tank, it is as light as a gen 1. You can thank me later.

    And #5 is why I still ride my 2008 KLR. Low purchase price and then just gas, oil changes, and farkles in all these years. Meanwhile, my riding buddies keep changing out their bikes looking for the "perfect" bike...which I don't think really exists.

    did they end up finally fixing the doohickey on the new klr? i looked at the bikes before i went with a xr650l. i wanted slightly more off road ability and i wasnt wanting to replace fairings if i accidentally dropped the bike. if i didnt do alot of off roading id probably have gotten one.
