How Can I Make This Rental Cello Sound Better??

  • My cello was in the shop because I discovered a long crack in the belly of the instrument. I was doing a lot of performing that week (fortunately, nothing solo!) and I needed to get the best rental instrument I could. I found this rental cello at a local string shop and it seriously paled in comparison to my own lovely cello. I had to find a few ways to make it sound better. This video shows you the tricks I did.

If you are an adult who has always wanted to learn the cello, or perhaps you need a good supplement to your in-person lessons, go check out cellodiscovery.com. It's affordable, and it's a GREAT place to learn the cello whether you are just beginning or are playing at an intermediate level.

I just realized you're right here in Austin! I've been going through your videos and really appreciate the way you teach. I'm 70 and a month ago rented a cello, which happens to have a terrible tinny A string that hurts my ears. Thanks to you, I can fix the problem with a Larsen soft string (just ordered it today). Thank you for caring so much about us beginners. I am blessed to find you!

Somehow I missed this comment! Hi back atcha from the ATX! Glad this was helpful to you! Maybe you will consider joining the Austin Cello Choir! It's all ages and all levels. I co-direct it with Tony Rogers of the Global Cello Project.

Great tips. I did not know about Wolf tones and wolf eliminators. Will check that out. Thank you.

Oh, the Versum solo strings are Tomastik strings? Only realised that now. I like that they come from my birth city. I was born in Vienna and am living nearby my whole life. I'm excited to go shopping for strings sometime in a local store there :)

I purchased my first cello nearly a year ago in complete ignorance, it was around $1600, a Juager 500 I think, and I’m ready to up grade, and it’s a and d strings are SO tinny, it’s good to know I can replace those strings. And I have several wolf tones…now I know what to look for in my next cello and what to do to make it sound better. I’m guessing you gave your cello a “hug” when you got her back!☺️

Great suggestions! Is there a "test" or process of elimination for wolf tones? Are there any videos dedicated to the problem of wolf tones and distinguishing them from just dull, flat sounding strings (especially the C & G)?

Hi Paul - There's a link in the description to this video which will take you to a blog I wrote on wolf tones. I have several videos linked in that blog which will give you some really great help on figuring out how to solve the wolf tone (and what exactly it sounds like).

Well I guess if cellos weren't so outrageously expensive , you could have a good backup.
Strings are one or most important factors ( like tires on a car) Get the strings your instrument likes (req. Lots of experimentation).
With all steel wound strings at one time I would boil them for 10 min and you would get back some clarity and brightness.

Noted. It's a good thing I play and teach much better than my editing skills. ;)
